They had a pair of D-1AA transfers...maybe one of them?

theoriginalupstate

Well since he's coming from Ithaca, SJF should have nothing to worry about...

I don't recall specifics, sorry, but I feel like one may have been Delaware State?

Pep should be happy with the Bathrooms more than likely being installed on the visitors side and the raised seats!

Here's the story.....

http://www.sjfc.edu/news/detail.dot?id=132558

Pep is convinced that the AU Pep Band's outstanding performance in the Growney Grandstand during the Oct. 24, 2009 football game against Alfred--a thrilling 31-28 Saxon win--was the clincher for this deal. St. John Fisher officials had to be somewhat embarrassed that a visiting pep band would plant itself behind the Cardinals' bench.

Congratulations to Fisher on the nice gift. Pep will look forward to the band sitting behind the Saxons in 2011... and may even relieve himself in Growney Stadium for the first time ever.

On Saxon Warriors! On to Victory!

Indianapolis Colts' Pierre Garcon no stranger to St. John Fisher

Pierre Garcon might have surprised many football fans with his 11 catches for 151 yards and a touchdown for the Indianapolis Colts in Sunday's 30-17 victory over the New York Jets in the AFC Conference championship game, but St. John Fisher football players caught his act three times during his college career.

In 2004, as a freshman at Norwich University, Garcon caught eight passes for 198 yards and four touchdowns in a 37-32 win over Fisher in Northfield, Vt. It was Fisher's only loss during the regular season.

"We played zone in that game," former Fisher player Steve Stepnick recalled Monday. "No one could keep up with him. He had great speed and good size."

Stepnick also was a freshman that afternoon. He went on to be a two-time Division III All-American cornerback for the Cardinals.

Garcon transferred from Norwich to Mount Union College and played twice more against Fisher.

In 2006, Mount Union beat Fisher 26-14 in Alliance, Ohio, but Stepnick and his teammates held Garcon to one catch for three yards. The Purple Raiders won the Division III national championship the following week.

In 2007, with Stepnick sidelined with a leg injury, Garcon caught six passes for 75 yards and three TDs in a 52-10 home win over Fisher.

"I was watching the game from a booth at the stadium," Stepnick recalled Monday. "Each time Garcon scored, he gave the exact stupid pose he used after Sunday's touchdown — his hands on his hips like Superman."

Stepnick, who works road patrol for the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, recalls Garcon as a gifted opponent: "Mount Union was predominantly a running team, but they made sure to get him the ball. He was easily the best receiver I ever played against, but I am surprised that any Division III receiver is doing so well. I know he had a good combine and got drafted, but I didn't think he'd do what he's doing now."

During Sunday's game, Stepnick was receiving messages from good-natured friends suggesting that the Jets should put him in the game to help contain Garcon.

Stepnick, who admittedly wasn't fast enough to play in the NFL and passed up opportunities to play in low-paying indoor leagues, is rooting for the Colts to win Super Bowl XLIV, but not because of his Garcon connection: "I'm a Peyton Manning fan."

# St. John Fisher assistant athletic director Norm Kieffer suggests that the Buffalo Bills should consider drafting another Mount Union wide receiver — Cecil Short III. He had 100 catches for 1,736 yards and 27 touchdowns this season. Garcon was the 205th pick in the 2008 NFL college draft by Indianapolis. The Bills took wide receiver James Hardy No. 41.

Thanks for posting the article over on the OAC board, too.  One thing I appreciated about Bob Matthews when I was in Rochester is that he never missed an opportunity to bring up references to Rochester's connection to the upper level pro sports.  Rochester is a great sports town, even if indoor lacrosse is the only sport where they play in the "bigs".

Interesting story. That just goes to show you how good Mount Union is. They have a NFL receiver to throw to, and they are a run first team. I remember going into that game, everyone knew how good Garcon was, but it seems like Fisher was more worried about Kmic and Michelli going into the game. Must be nice to be a Raiders fan.

Even better to be a Whitewater fan this year, unfortunately.

The smart money on the Hartwick transfer would be Mike Mathews.  He's transferred from Fox Run, to St. Thomas Aquinas, back to Fox Run, to Purdue, to Delaware, to Ithaca in the past three years....

It sounded like the program was really, really high on Jason Hendel out of Chicago, so perhaps Mathews saw the writing on the wall?
Thousands of fans join in the revelry, showing their Bomber pride and support for the football team. Some fans take the rowdiness a little too far, however, by starting fights, damaging property and tipping Port-a-Potties. -Ithacan, November 10th

I asked one of the members on the team and they didn't even know anyone transferred (just got back from the semester break) but said it wouldn't be surprising if Matthews transferred.  I heard he didn't click with the team and they said its not a surprise hes on his 7th? team now in 4 years.  I also heard this won't affect the QB battle because he wasn't good enough to contend for the starting spot anyways.

At the end of the 2009 football season, it appeared that Alfred was struggling to fill its 2010 schedule and had only eight games. The Saxons have since picked up Widener for the season opener, and will also play Frostburg State (E8 contest in 2011). Those two replace UMass-Dartmouth and FDU-Florham, leaving the Saxons, once again, tentatively, with a 9-game schedule in 2010.

Pep is hoping for a tenth game. It appears Alfred and RPI both have open dates on Oct. 16. Pep would like to see a rematch of the 2008 ECAC Bowl?! Pep is thinking such a repeat matchup could test the relationship of a certain father (AU alum) and son (RPI alum).

Fisher and UR to hold a press conference tomorrow to announce that the Courage Bowl will be played at Paetec Park downtown.  For those that dont know, Paetec is a soccer stadium built about 7 years ago for the Rochester Rhinos.  It also hosts Section V tournament games in many sports.  I believe its capacity is in the 10-15k range.

Personally, I think it is a bad idea.  Example of egos getting in the way of common sense.  Its all about the benjamin though!
