One interesting thing I noticed a few weeks ago was how some school districts across the country are set up.  In Massachusetts,  99% of the towns have their own high school, and if you live in that town, you go to that high school.  The towns have generally had the same boundries since the 17th century.  Then I was watching a Hoover, Alabama game and looked up the town on the internet.  The town of Hoover is in two counties and is basically a gerrymandered/segragated section of Birmingham.  Really kind of a wierd setup.

But LD I don't think Massachusetts high school is that much worse than it was 10 or 20 years ago.  The biggest difference now is that there are more Catholic Schools that are putting a focus on football (Catholic Memorial, St. Johns Prep and Xaverian) and the ISL is really stepping it up in recruiting public talent (BBN, Lawrence Academy, Roxbury Latin).  In fact, back when we played, BBN would probably compete with the Brockton JV team.  Now they would win the state championship easy.

Plus people in the northeast just aren't interested in High School football.  Its a kids game to many people.  I also attritute some of that to the liberal atmosphere of these Massachusetts towns.  My hometown (Brookline) a town of 60,000 people you could probably drive around on a nice summer day and not one family would be outside grilling.  You don't know your neighbors, most people don't take pride in their communities, kids are at PSAT prep classes instead of afterschool sports, and people in general are nerds.

Most MA kids are pussies nowadays.  I think that is half the problem.  What happened to the tough kids that enjoyed playing football and smacking each other around?  Now they play video games, get fat, and listen to their ipods and make sure to NEVER make eye contact with anyone.

And on goes the pussification of America...

We could always blame it on Janet Jackson.

I agree, but have you been drinkin'?

ipods and the like are a huge reason for the problem.  Utah may not see people grilling, I NEVER see kids playing a pick-up (unsupervised) game of football or baseball here in Boston......sad.

Yeah, but to be fair, when my buddies and I played pick up games we didn't exactly do it in the middle of crowded streets where creepy old guys from Union were cruising around. If I recall we mostly played before school or at the park behind Wegmans... the only thing we did in the street was hockey, and that was only on the side streets. i don't think the situation is as dire as some of the crotchety folks are making it out to be.

This is Natick mind you, one of the best football towns in the history of Massachusetts.

This line kills me:

"Let's get together with the students and try to come back in two or three weeks with something that meets our goals,'' Sanchioni said.

Since when do school officials care what the kids have to say?  Some little emo loser punk thinks his ipod makes him study better...SO F'ing what?  ADD didn't even exist when we were kids.  It's all a fraud and an excuse for kids to fail at life and an excuse for mommy and daddy to tell little Johnny Podunk 'Atleast you tried your best!  It's not your fault!'

It was called being hyper and when KS was a kid they made us run back and forth outside for a few minutes.

And as we speak, this article comes out this morning in the Brookline Tab about how students have the right to smoke and how the high school now gives students a spot to smoke outside:

http://www.wickedlocal.com/brookline/features/x241583410/Despite-health-risks-new-policy-tolerates-student-smoking-outside-Brookline-High

My favorite two quotes:

""It makes sense — it stops the freshmen from smoking," said Jesse Schneider, a junior who said he smokes.

He thought the policy was inconvenient; it forces students under shade trees in nice weather, and smokers can't spread out at all. He was skeptical about whether it would encourage smokers to quit."

Haven't posted in weeks, but FU SJF.  I hope we get a return trip in playoffs.  I hear you're good, and caught part of the game at the airport.  I'd be more upset, but I was coming back from a vacation out of the country

It's OK Pumpkin, we'd love to see you in the playoffs.

Maybe Coach Cragg can gift wrap the game for us again by doing a fake punt inside their own 10.

or it could be a genetic disorder like this study just found out....

     Sept. 30 (Bloomberg) -- Don't blame attention-deficit
hyperactivity disorder on poor parenting or excess candy. A
study suggests it's all about genes.
Hyperactive children have a larger proportion of small DNA
segments that are either duplicated or missing, according to a
study published online today by the medical journal The Lancet.
The findings may help remove the stigma attached to the
disorder, said Anita Thapar of Cardiff University School of
Genetics, the study's lead author.
"Some people say 'it's not a real disorder' or 'it's the
result of bad parenting' and parents and children can encounter
much stigma because of this," Thapar said at a press conference
in London yesterday. "So finding this direct genetic link to
ADHD should help clear this misunderstanding."

Hello My Eastern Brethren!

All I can say is.......WOW!  The prior 8-10 pages of discussion truly show that your eastern college education is top notch.  I don't think I have read that much on a subject on this board without one "d-bag", "idiot", or "loser" being used.  BRAVO!

Two points I would like to add....

1.  Larry Kehres - hire a guy like him, incent him to stay for 20+ years, and I believe you will have great success.

2.  Have an administration in place that will get into an aggressive growth, enhancement, and marketing phase when an "LK-like" coach is hired.

Prior to LK, Mount was just like all the other D-III schools out there.  "Good" some years, mediocre others, bad others.  It was really the perfect storm when he became the head coach.

Oh...one more thing....most Mount fans would be VERY happy for SJF (or someone) to run the table and obtain the #1 seed in the East.  Good luck SJF, and figure out how to win that one game every team has during the year where they aren't at their best.

Good point d-bag.

But seriously, you are right on the money.  I've had the privilege to have been coached by Jim Butterfield, and Ron Schipper in an all-star game.  Just by talking to these guys for a few minutes gives you the desire to want to play for them.  I'm betting Keres has the same effect on players.

But this cost of college thing has become a main factor now for many eastern colleges (not saying it isn't an issue for other schools).  20 years ago someone important could call the financial aid office at a college and 'school scholarships' suddenly appear.  With the high price of schools now with stricter financial aid rules, it makes it hard to recruit the same type of kid.

Wow, I don't look at the boards all of Wednesday and I miss 10 pages since my last post!  Nice conversation to all.

One thing I'm wondering is that Mount Union may not be considered the number 1 team going into the playoffs like they usually are... Does that change their likelihood of being moved?  I mean, if they are the second best team, should they be rewarded by getting the #1 seed in the "easiest" region?

And I want to clarify that when I say "not the number 1 team"  I'm not referring to any Poll, just that overall, I think UWW is considered the best team in the nation right now.

Now we all know you're just poking fun now because geographically, moving UWW here just wouldn't make sense now would it?

I know they wouldn't bring UWW, but I'm saying the move of MU isn't necessarily right either.  Is it fair to give MU an easier road?  (Now I know, fairness doesn't matter when it comes to NCAA bracketing)
