Interesting idea, Jonny, but I am going to take issue with one thing; isn't Brookline one of the wealthier(est?) cities in the Boston area? Perhaps it's more of a class thing; football isn't seen as a rich kid's sport, like hockey or something else. As far as liberalism I'm pretty liberal and love sports, and most of the other liberals I know either like all or no sports (unforunately, mostly the latter. save me!), they don't really discriminate from sport to sport.

I'm not sure what the things you're describing (that I've bolded) have to do with either liberalism or football players. What you're describing sounds an awful lot like my girlfriend's hometown in orange county, CA, one of the wealthiest and most republican counties in california, where NOBODY talks to their neighbors (i know, i've tried!). i think the liberal focus on education over sports is a valid point, but republicans in OC anyway are just as standoffish--and produce a LOT of pro athletes.

In sum, I guess I'd say as far as Mass goes I'd blame it on less focus on sports at that age, and let's not forget the weather.

I used to think it was about wealth, until I moved down to Texas, when I realized that success at HS sports is about culture. I used to think that Texas football was about small towns out in the middle of nowhere, where the only thing to to was play and watch football. Now I realize that EVERY town is crazy about football. I live in a very wealthy town (Highland Park), yet Highland Park High School has the most wins in Texas HS football history. EVERY adult talks about the last HP game, or the upcoming opponent, what the rest of the state looks like, etc. ALL THE TIME. These are successful lawyers, doctors, businessmen, etc., yet they live and breath HS football.

So I agree, it's about focus, or culture, and not about wealth. It's why lacrosse is so big in Baltimore, Metro NYC, and Upstate NY.  Frankly, the focus of kids in the Northeast is on academics, with sports seen as an integral part of helping to teach children life lessons. In Texas, sports is the focus, especially football.

I agree with this.  People used to be proud to be from Brookline, or Waltham, or Weymouth, or Malden, or Medford, or Somerville, or Melrose, or Woburn, or Lowell, or Lawrence, or Billerica, or Chelmsford, etc etc etc....Now, everyone cares more about having a nicer car than their neighbor and could care less if their HS sports teams beat their ancient rival neighboring towns.  Yuppies have taken over the Northeast.

Okay, you guys have been laboring this, so i'm going to say that is just bull****. Don't tell me people in suburban Dallas, where football is huge, don't care as much about their cars than people in Brookline. Bull****! There are assholes everywhere, rich and poor, country and city, sports and academics, liberal and conservative, whatever.

Stop pushing this line of BS about how people that don't like football must be different then you, then draw all these conclusions about how they must be the same people that do completely unrelated **** you don't like. These categories and assignation of geographical personality is just bull****!

PS- I don't do -k so don't even think it was me.

How is it BS maxpower?  You yourself said your friend in a rich republican town in California had great HS football.  Again, look at Massachusetts.

Wellesley, Lincoln-Sudbury, Brockton, Everett and Winchester have great HS football programs.  All 5 towns have multiple state championships within the last 25 years.  Wellesley, LS and Winchester are two of the richest towns in America, while Brockton and Everett are not as rich.  What do they all have in common though?  It isn't class, race or geographics.

And I have to say I work and am from Brookline and although we joke about the liberal nutjobs, Brookline residents are some of the best people in this country.  So I don't want you to think we all think liberals are bad people and conservatives are good people because they like football.  But it is true that I like grilling, and people in Brookline do not.  And it is true what LD said.  50 years ago everyone went to the Friday night or afternoon football game in MA.  That does not happen today.

Del Val was 9-1 last year and didn't get a No. 1 bid.  I'm not sure why this year would be any different.

And, for what it's worth, sitting here today I don't think Del Val will finish 9-1.  I think they'll win the MAC but pick up a loss along the way.

Would a 9-1 Del Valley be a better pick than a 10-0 Fisher? That W&J win might be better than anything Fisher picks up, unless Alfred finishes 8-1 (which may very well not happen) or Hobart picks it up.

Blinders to you (I try), or blinders to the "truth" you're spinning? Look, I don't want to start anything, so I'll stop after this, but there are two sentiments here that always frustrate me:

-There are two kinds of people, those who live the right way and those who live the wrong way. Guess which one I am!
-Things aren't as good as they used to be! Damn kids....

The world changes, my friend. Sometimes for the worse, sometimes for the better. One thing I've noticed is that there are very, very few people who really strike me as anything but honest and trying to live a decent life, once you really get to know them. Dividing the world into good and bad, friends and enemies... that's the real blinder.

How does this relate to football? I'm fine with ruminating on why the East is down (which is how this all got started), but as soon as it gets around to this "it's a damn shame, the way kids are today" crap, it's so shortsighted it burns me.

JU- just saw your post. I'm not saying things aren't different. I'm just against statements that trying to tie the whole thing up in one pithy statement about the way people are. And this really isn't a liberal-conservative thing for me, it burns me when liberals over-categorize people too, and that sure happens a lot.

I don't blame the kids, I blame their parents.  And I live in the South now, and people aren't like that here...(yet)

I don't think LD or I would disagree with you, but I don't think anyone called someone who didn't like football or grilling bad people or living "the wrong way".  I just think my life would be more enjoyable if I could invite some of my neighbors over for some burgers and beers.

Dammit I always miss out on the karma love sessions because whenever people dish them out my last post was always a few pages ago.  I have no dignity so to those who are wondering if that was my attempt to jump in and get some sympathy karma dap I will save you the time...It was.

I think any scenario regarding Fisher finishing 10-0 will not come to fruition.  Like I've said before if their defense doesn't improve from what it currently is (I'd say slightly above average at best) I can see them finishing something like 8-2.  Offensively this may be the best team we've fielded but 2006 was better overall.  So if Gordon is correct in his prediction and Del Val finishes 8-2 as well...Bring on dem Purple Boyzzzz.
