There's another thing we haven't discussed. IC-Cortland is a huge game, and I wonder if kids check out mentally after losing that game and knowing they're stuck with ECAC's. Three of the four Bomber ECAC wins (Including the last three) have come after winning Cortaca. The one loss came in a season they lost Cortaca.

Excellent point. In IC's case, an ECAC game after Cortaca is actually a letdown. Alfred, meanwhile, does not have a season-ending rivalry game such as an AlBart or a HoFred. The Saxon season ends usually with just another game in Week 11. Right now, that game is Utica, which could be much more interesting this season, but not on the level of a Cortaca.

12:04 AM Pep? Geeeeezzzz! Burning the candle at both ends!!

Kids definitely mentally check out. I think that might even be the case with a win.  My senior season, we knew before we beat Fisher in 09 that we were most likely going to be in an ECAC. Beating Fisher in OT would've been the perfect end to the season, at least that's how I feel.  We did all the senior ceremonies at home and throughout the week at practice.  It was sort of supposed to be the culmination to everything.  Then, the following Tuesday, we were out there practicing again.  It was a really weird feeling.  And that's not even on the scale of Cortaca.  I can't imagine the weeklong preparation and ceremonies for that game.  And then to lose it would be even worse.  But to win it, then have to play another game, it almost makes it feel like a scrimmage I guess.  It was bizarre.  It's incredible to be able to play one more game, no doubt about that.  And especially against teams you wouldn't normally play.  But there's a certain energy there in that final week and to suit up again after that, win or lose, and not be in the playoffs, it's a little lackluster.

Then again, in 2005, when we beat Fisher at home and got to play in an ECAC game when we feel we should've been in the playoffs at 9-2, we were on a mission to prove to everyone that it was a mistake we missed the playoffs and destory whoever we were playing.  It's weird how it works out...

Good to have a player's viewpoint.

It seems like the teams that get the most out of it are the ones who feel they were denied a shot at the NCAA's. Sadly, there are only so many of those teams. Matching up opponents who have a little more in common would be nice too. When I did radio work for the 2004 IC game, we had no idea who Mass-Dartmouth was, and I think it doesn't help get casual fans there. But there are traditional OOC rivalries they could shoot for. Ithaca's got history with Brockport, Hobart, Union, Buff State, etc. But matching up two teams with zero history in these games gives it an exhibition feel.

I was ridiculed by the entire sports info staff for thinking we were hosting a game between UMass and Dartmouth...

I sort of like when two teams that don't normally meet get to play in the Bowl Games. When Fisher went up to Husson a few years back it was nice to have to look up Husson's information, who they had played, results, etc. If Fisher is not going to make the NCAA's and have to play a bowl game, at least I had something to do that week. When they played RPI a few years earlier, I had a good idea of what RPI was going to bring, so I checked out mentally as a fan.

For the casual fan that you mentioned, I agree the interregional ooc rivalries are great, but as a hard core fan, I don't mind either way. I guess that is what makes me a hard core fan and not a casual one.  :D

1 major change the ECAC needs to do is stop making all the games at Noon.  Only the "hard core" fans and family/friends make it out to the games.  I was a QB so I always went on the field early and we would get out there 10-15 minutes before the rest of the team and the stands would be completely bare with no one in the parking lot.  Then, we would come back out and you would think that most people had no idea the time was changed from 2 PM to Noon.  I think it was a big mistake.  They have an opportunity to put a little extra energry in the air with scheduling.  Make it a Friday or Saturday night game.  Make it have the feeling that it is a little more important.  The Noon game reminds me of when I was playing JV football in high school and we were the warm up game for the people that came out to watch Varsity...

I 100% agree with the time change. The bowl game is supposed to be a fun reward for a good season, so why not treat it like a bigger deal than a regular season game.

I can't imagine that '08 game you mentioned earlier being played at night.  It was FREEZING at 86 Field at noon!

It would be a lot of fun to have a night game, though.

Did people forget that it's Friday? Let's hear some picks....

Springfield by 10 over Utica.... Utica's offense will surprise us but their defense will not.

Fisher by 21 over Hartwick

Alfred by 27 over RPI (more like RIP... hey-o!)

And.... SLU by 1 over Union

That would be wild to see SLU beat Union...

With RPI down this year we could see a 6-4 SLU team as the #8 seed in the NCAAs...

Craziness...

As for the results I've got:

AU-34
RPI-20

UC- 35
SC- 45

SJF- 40
HC- 21

SLU- 17
Union- 28

Did you not see my prediction? 1 million to 0 in favor of Alfred... Come ON!!

But in all seriousness.. Alfred isn't blowing out anyone, not the way they should.  They turn the ball over.  A decent team could catch them and give them a suprise.

I'm still gonna say like 38-17 for the final. But it will probably be 21-14 at half or something relatively close.  Maybe 28-17 into the fourth but AU will put it away.
