I think it's awesome Qatar got it..... did you see their proposed stadiums? Holy amazing:

Also the US JUST HAD IT. This bid, to me, reeked of "we promise we'll care more this time!" Clinton actually said something along the lines of the US is a great place to have it because we have a lot of foreigners that would fill the stadiums.

Expect Amazing?  More like Expect A-blazing!  And the fact that Zizou was backing the bid makes it all the more shaddy.  Well, at least Qatar will get to play in their one and only World Cup!

(Those stadiums are pretty sweet, though)

Key word: PROPOSED. And I disagree that we just had it. 1994 to 2022 would be a span of 28 years. Since the earliest we could get another WC would be 2026 (against European host competition, which would make that unlikely), that gap would be the longest any federation (ours is CONCACAF) would have ever experienced between World Cups. And the 1994 World Cup was the most commercially successful ever, so "we'll care more next time" isn't on target.

Forget about Clinton, the US bid was clearly the winner on all technical aspects. Once again, FIFA ignored facts, and defied logic. Who knew this was a competition base on 60 minute presentations? So now they will have 4 consecutive shaky hosts (South Africa, Brazil, Russia and Qatar). Is their a more incompetent and corrupt sports organization than FIFA? I think not.

Uh, I'm not so sure the IOC is not right there with them on the post office wall.

What Clinton said was actually a lot less dumb that how you make it sound.  He said (paraphrasing): America is such a country of immigrants that every participating team can expect a fair amount of home crowd support.  Sounds like a good sales pitch to me.

I know very little about soccer, especially the politics that go into hosting a WC. That being said, I kind of agree with Doid that Qatar's bid hinges a lot on "Trust us, we can get these stadiums built and we won't kill anyone due to heat stroke". I know a lot of people are saying South Africa kind of showed anyone could do it, but still

EDIT: And judging by the round-by-round votes, this wasn't even close. Qatar 11 votes in the first round. With 22 total, there was never really any doubt.

Pretty sure the NCAA is right on par with FIFA and the IOC.  So...they investigate Reggie Bush for 5 years, wait until his jersey sales are down, and then decide to essentially erase the kid from the record books because of money his parents took for their home in San Diego...but they review the Cam Newton situation for all of 5 minutes, determine that he didn't know what his dad was doing, and essentially hand Auburn and Newton a National Championship shot (assuming they win the SEC Championship game) and the Heisman???  I am sure the Newton decision had nothing to do with the sponsorship money coming in for the SEC and BCS championship games with the likely Heisman Trophy winner playing in both games.  Terrible...

Unfortunately, there are a lot of contenders. You certainly won't hear me defend the IOC (or the NCAA, or UCI, etc.)

Although, giving it more thought, the organization that awarded the recent Commonwealth Games to India should certainly be considered as a darkhorse candidate.

It's no sure thing that Brazil can pull it off, so the US is definitely on the top of the list of last minute replacements.  FIFA won't be going back to EUFA 8 years after Russia and the choice of Qatar for '22 likely keeps China from getting the following Cup.  So, we're the safety valve for the next Cup and have a great chance at '26.

If Chase Field can be air conditioned, why not a soccer stadium?

That has a retractable roof, none of the stadium drawings have those. And it's not only about the stadium (and the players), but about the atmosphere, the fans in common areas, etc. I live in Dallas, and let me tell you, June and July are oppressive. Most people leave Dallas if they can in the summer. And Doha has an average temperature 10 degrees higher than Dallas.

This isn't sour grapes (OK, a little). If Australia won the bid, fine. Grant Wahl from CNNSI.com has some great thoughts on this.

Yeah, and the NCAA still has track regionals in Texas. Bastards.
