No activity on the E8 boards this month yet?

Pep is thinking football only because yesterday was AU's football banquet, held at the Hornell Knights of Columbus Hall with an announced crowd of 400 in attendance. Pep thoroughly enjoyed the highlight tape (that included a photo of the pep band) but even more so the awards presentations (good fun!).

And, while "attendance" is on Pep's mind, with St. John's once again leading the nation in D3 football attendance statistics, Pep is wondering what went wrong at Ithaca....why were attendance figures not reported to the NCAA? Or reported incorrectly? As a result, Ithaca shows total attendance of 5 for five games or an average of 1 person in attendance??? Wouldn't an NCAA statistician realize the error and try to correct it? To this website's credit, Ithaca was estimated with attendance of 5,000 for five games, an average of 1,000.

We didn't estimate anything.

I suspect Ithaca used a comma in its attendance, which the computer probably didn't like. But the NCAA may have been able to deal with it better than Stat Crew did.

It's AU Spring Break and Pep is on the 33-passenger Alfred University bus with 30 other passengers, bound for De Land, Florida where, in four-and-a-half-days, they will build a house up from a concrete slab together with a family who will one day soon occupy and enjoy a decent, affordable home built to code that can be expected to stand the test of tumultuous times (and hurricanes). This will be the 19th house that Alfred University students have constructed in De Land, Florida since 1997.

Pep,
DrT thinks that just rocks.
Kudos to AU.

Pep just back from Florida. No time to post now. Watch for future posts on the house built on DeLand, the manatee in DeSpring, and the fire on DeBus...quite simply, more "Adventures with Pep."

Pep surmises no one's interested in hearing his stories about building a house in DeLand during Spring Break, seeing the manatees in DeSpring and surviving a fire on DeBus.

But Pep was happy to catch this recruiting tidbit as Coach Murray is looking to beef up his receiving corps:

Houghton College has been accepted for membership in the Empire 8.

Houghton College is located in Allegany County about 30 miles northwest of Alfred.

Pep is happy to have the NAIA school, from which Mrs. Pep will graduate in May, making the jump into NCAA Division III athletics. While Houghton does not have football, the Highlanders have always fielded a solid soccer program.

Tell mrs. Pep to walk over to the athletic department and find the track/x-country coach/SID and give him a slap on the head from KS.  Have Mrs. Pep tell him it is from his uncle and it's for good luck.  KS is happy to see Houghton make the jump.  Now KS can harass his nephew even more.

Well, over at IC, the discussion of the moment is the proposed new mascot to be used with the Bombers name (they are adamant the name is not going away with this).  You can take a look at the options here:

http://ithaca.edu/mascot/finalists/

Being honest, I am not overly thrilled with any of the three proposals here.  I don't have anything against adopting a mascot, but none of the ideas really strikes me as demanding to be selected.

EDIT to add-

Football coach Mike Welch was asked his opinion of the trio of ideas by the Ithacan.  Here's what they have him saying:

QuoteThough I applaud the efforts of the committee, which was given a very difficult task, I would not be happy with any of the three finalists.

I am a 1973 graduate and have been a coach at Ithaca College for 27 years. Over these many years, I have seen the efforts to change the name or develop a mascot for our school. This new attempt has brought similar results.

I feel the name is the symbol. The word Bomber is a symbol for our commitment to excellence in everything we do. The word Bomber is a winner. The more I look at other colleges and universities and what we have at Ithaca College, this spirit is rare. It is a spirit of family, hard work and commitment to not only win in life, but to do it the right way, to do it with class. Though the efforts are noble, I do not know how you can improve on that.

Wow, those were the best they could come up with? Lake Beast?? FLYING SQUIRREL? LOL
