Would think AU should have a great recruiting class after their run in 2010....

Last year, after just making the NCAAs (first time since 1981), AU had over 500 high school football players express an interest in playing football at Alfred. Can only believe the interest is at least matched this year after winning two NCAA contests. Pep is exited to see the Perkins kid at WR...East High is where Vinson Hendrix played in high school....yes, Doid, for the Orientals!

Cards- Im not sure where to put Kramer.
He is one hell of a talent and with his running ability he is much more dangerous with his feet than in the pocket.  Not to say that he cant throw the ball, but even in high school his legs are what got him to championship games...

Great names all around from those links.  As far as first names go, I hope Keegan and Dakota from Oneonta make it to the varsity squad.  And a last name of Flagg from Pittsford?  How appropriate is that for the Saxons?!?  But the best is Jimmy Fellone, which I hope is pronounced Fallon.  All-in-all there is a lot of opportunity there to develop some cheers and songs for the band!
Check out the official card game of the AU Pep Band - Str8 Eight!

OK, I'm afraid to ask, but what is their mascot? Maybe they could use the Flying Squirrel if Ithaca ends up passing on it...

Um, they ARE the Orientals.....so their "mascot" is an Oriental.

Their former mascot was "Chang" (no joking), but it looks like they changed to the "Dragons" with the opening of the refurbished campus:

There are so many jokes about this topic I wouldn't know where to begin.

That being said, I can't believe it took this long for "a few individuals" being offended for the school district to change the name.  Anyone else notice that the "role model" on the right side of the page is an oriental, er, I mean dragon, er I mean man named Raymond Lee?

In Massachusetts, many schools used the term "Indian" as their mascot, and one I know of used the term "Redmen".  Most of the Indian schools have changed their names to "warriors" or the like, and the Natick Redmen changed to the Natick "Red and Blue".  There still are a few schools that use the term "Indians" though.

Mr. Ypsi

It often takes far longer than one would expect to catch on to objectionable names.  A town near where I grew up was the Pekin (so-named because it was supposedly exactly opposite Peking (Beijing) - it isn't) 'Chinks'!  It took them until the 1980s to change to the 'Dragons'. :o

But then, they took until the 1970s to repeal a local ordinance that any 'colored person' found on the streets after sunset could be legally shot.  So far as I know, they never tested the legality of that ordinance. ;)

BTW, Pekin is a town in central Illinois, not Mississippi. >:( :(

I don't know anything about lacrosse, so I'm in no position to even know if such a team exists,  :P

maxpower

I was the last class of the Irondequoit Indians, my high school. They are now the Eagles. East High, in Rochester, is still the Orientals, and I believe Fairport is still the Red Raiders, although I'm not sure what that's derived from.

EDIT: I read more and saw that East was the beginning of this whole conversation. My bad.

pg- ill stick to football then! :P
