Just a heads-up to the room -- last I checked, and it has been a couple weeks now, much of the Empire 8 didn't have its schedule posted. What we have is pieced together and may be missing individual games such as the Hartwick one mentioned.

One reason schools don't schedule a game for Week 1 is to save money. It costs a lot to house 100-plus kids an extra week before campus opens.

That makes sense.  I'm not going to speak to the disadvantages of losing a week of practice vs. the monetary advantage of not having to house that extra week since I never played football on that level, but what do others think about this?

Pep could be wrong, but Pep doesn't think a whole lot of thought goes into scheduling for football games or AU wouldn't have Family Weekends when the football team is on the road...or home games during Mid-Semester Break when no one is on campus.

Pep knows nothing of the financial operations of the Alfred football program and really can't add much insight to the question at hand. Housing shouldn't be a major issue at AU and, who knows, perhaps Dining Services picks up the difference on board by beginning the players' meal plans earlier? IDK. Pep does know that it must take a lot to FEED 200+ football players!

Ithaca has had its schedule posted for a few months now on their website.  (of course you already know that and have it posted)

But you are right, the dining hall companies do have to get paid for every kid that eats and every school I have heard of always takes those meals into account in the budget.

Fisher already has tons of things going on 2 even 3 weeks prior to the semester start, so I wouldnt think that price is an issue, who knows- if there is an NFL lockout, Fisher may get to practice on its own home field!

Found a two-month-old story on AU Receivers/Returners Coach Steve Pribble:

Outstanding young man with a promising future in the coaching ranks. Will be nice to keep him at AU. Pep thinks he fits in with the coaching staff rather nicely.

And, most importantly, take time to remember....thanks to all who have served and are serving our nation in the military! Pep wishes a great weekend to all!

Found an invaluable website/database that lists the colleges that NFL players attended. There are THREE former Saxons who played in the NFL, two more than Pep had previously known about. Here are all the NFL players who had attended current Empire 8 and Liberty League colleges:

http://www.databasefootball.com/players/bycollege.htm?sch=Alfred+University

http://www.databasefootball.com/players/bycollege.htm?sch=Ithaca+College

http://www.databasefootball.com/players/bycollege.htm?sch=Frostburg+State+University

http://www.databasefootball.com/players/bycollege.htm?sch=Springfield+College

http://www.databasefootball.com/players/bycollege.htm?sch=St.+Lawrence+University

http://www.databasefootball.com/players/bycollege.htm?sch=Union+College%2C+Schenectady%2C+NY

http://www.databasefootball.com/players/bycollege.htm?sch=University+of+Rochester

http://www.databasefootball.com/players/bycollege.htm?sch=Hobart+College

Colleges not listed did not have any NFL players among those attending said institution.

Just something to ponder while waiting for pre-season camp....and BAND CAMP '11!

Hoping that our friends in Springfield all made it through yesterday's tornadoes as safely as possible.  The damage looks horrific in the landfall zone.  Springfield is always one of those football road trips I look forward to -- I know the downtown of the city gets a bad rep, but it's a nice area overall with great people that I've met over the years.

Pep is pleased to see a crew working to replace the small bridge over the mighty Kanakadea behind Alfred's home grandstand. Those who attended any games at Merrill Field last year may have noticed that a "bridge" had been placed ON TOP of the existing bridge, with a steep incline on either side. Apparently the old bridge had been flagged as unsafe but it could not be determined who owned the bridge so a temporary fix was installing the new bridge over the old.

They have taken off the new bridge and are preparing to remove the old bridge. The new bridge will then be installed on the level, Pep assumes.

While work progresses there, Pep wonders how the track and field complex behind Growney Stadium is proceeding. If the NFL has a season, will that project be completed before Bills Camp? And, while Pep is assuming it includes a grandstand for the visitors side of Growney, Pep still wonders whether that will be completed with the current project. Pep is wondering where the band will be seated for the Oct. 1 clash between the Saxons and Cardinals at Growney Stadium.

Any Fisher fans in the know?

Pep,
The project was supposed to be finished by the time the Bills came to town, and yes is to include the visiting fans section as well as PERMANENT BATHROOMS!

RIP Carl T. "Sam" Moses

Easily Alfred's most dedicated football fan, Carl T. "Sam" Moses, 85, of Whitney Valley Road, Almond, died Friday, June 10, 2011 at home following a short illness. Moses, who had run the machine shop at the NYS College of Ceramics at Alfred University for many years, pictured below with AU LB and Co-Captain Nick Clark at the most recent football awards banquet, regularly attended Saxon football practices and was a constant source of encouragement to the team.

In his later years Sam carried a cane, which in no way hindered his enthusiasm for the Saxons. Just prior to the kick-off of the 2009 campaign, Pep drove Sam and his son Marty (in Sam's car) to Selinsgrove, PA on a rainy Friday night for an AU football scrimmage against Susquehanna. It was three hours of steady rain en route to SU whereupon the rains subsided for three hours of enjoyable Alfred football, followed by three hours of steady rain en route home.

The Saxons will miss their Sideline Warrior.

BomberJeff

Ithaca College President Thomas Rochon has announced that the IC Bombers mascot search is being discontinued with no mascot being selected.  The school will remain the Bombers with no 'physical or visual representation'.

Here's Rochon's statement on the IC Mascot Blog:
http://www.ithaca.edu/mascot/blogs/ic_mascot_search_blog/mascot_search_concluded/

And here is the 'points of interest' conclusions from the mascot search committee.  They noted that while all 3 ideas had their share of advocates, the Phoenix received the most support by far.
