Perception often trumps reality.  What many hs students (and, at least as importantly, their parents) don't realize is that the high list-price schools will almost invariably also have much higher financial aid (relatively few students pay full list price), so the NET price difference is generally MUCH less than the list-price difference.  But many, many potential students never get past the 'sticker shock' to realize this.

North Park U a few years back tried a different approach.  They dramatically lowered the list price (with, of necessity, a corresponding reduction in financial aid).  As I understand it, enrollment increased significantly, yielding enough extra 'net' tuition dollars that they can still do 'need-blind' admissions yet are still ahead financially.

This is not a viable approach for all - sometimes high tuition IS the appeal!  (I recall the classic illustration of a Scotch - I forget which one - who a number of years ago had slumping sales.  Without changing the product at all, they doubled the price.  Sales sky-rocketed! :P)  We've all been trained since birth that 'you get what you pay for'.  And we all have a bit of the snob in us, however deeply buried.  But the NPU approach might be something for schools to consider.

Maybe there will be more help but many times the price of tuition in the end is still brutal. On top of that we are not talking about many "needy" urban or rural students who come from nothing. Seems to dlip that most d3 football players come from the middle class right up through the rich. Many of the students in question don't make the "cut" for financial aide because their parents make too much money. dlip's parents made a combined 60,000 a year and even with relatively good grades dlip couldn't get **** from financial aide being an out of stater at a public institution like UVM. It just seems different today, middle class families have to look in the mirror and be honest with themselves. That is unless they or the student does not mind an never ending timetable of ****ing student loans like dlip has.

Hey Pride!

Springfield fans not making the trip out to Mayberry for today's 12:30 p.m. kickoff will be happy to know that Empire8TV will be streaming the game at: http://www.empire8.tv/play/index.cfm?fuseaction=embstay&id=2315118086

In addition, play-by-play radio coverage by WLEA is also streamed live at: http://www.canisteovalleynews.com/

Good news here is that morning cloud coverage is to give way to afternoon sun, with only a 20% chance of rain this afternoon.

A couple thoughts on today's games.

Alfred-Springfield: Obviously the game of the week. Both offenses have put up tons of points early in the season, and it'll be a real treat to see which defense(s) step up to the biggest challenge they've faced all year.

SJF-Hobart: Strong regional rivalry here. The Cardinals shocked a lot of people not in winning the Courage Bowl, but how easily they won it. This week, they get Hobart, who comes in having had two bye weeks to prepare for the game after a strong Week 1 win.

Frostburg-RM: The Bobcats are riding high off their first-ever E8 win, but this won't be an easy game. Randolph-Macon's 3-0 on the year, albeit over suspect competition. This should be a pretty fair acid test for both teams.

Hartwick-Mount Ida: Mount Ida, out of the much-maligned ECFC, is 0-2 on the year. Both were close games, but if Hartwick plays the same game they played against Norwich, a similar outcome's pretty likely.

PICKS

Alfred over Springfield: The Pride had a long roadtrip to Mayberry, and beating up on Husson's a long way from taking on probably the best team in the E8.

SJF over Hobart: This won't be a cakewalk for Fisher. A team that's had 21 days between games has had a lot of time to scout and get ready. That said, BOY does that Courage Bowl win look impressive.

Frostburg over Randolph-Macon: Pretty much a coin flip; when in doubt, go the conference homer route and see what happens. ;)

Hartwick over Mount Ida: Ladies and gentlemen, the ECFC.

Fun game and beautiful day in Mayberry.  Looked like offenses would rule the day as both teams took their opening possessions to the house.  Then the defenses stepped up and it was all knotted up at the half.  Alfred dominated the third quarter and built a 30-14 lead before Carter decided to do it all himself to bring it within one score before he got hurt and Alfred ran out the clock.

I'm interested in the Fisher game.  Perhaps they were the ones caught looking ahead or is Hobart on their way to 8-0?

Looking ahead doesn't explain this game. Hobart is clearly better than expected, but getting down 56-14 at home is not something good teams do

I was somewhat dismayed about the "looking ahead" mention from this site, but I kept my mouth shut.  I really didn't think Coach Murray at Alfred would look past his Alma Mater.

Uh, no one said Alfred was looking ahead to anything...

Saxon73

pg04,  Apparently you did not see the articles from the "predictions" or whatever on the main page this week.  Essentially one of the guys, Kieth or whomever, said Alfred might be beat because they were looking ahead to the Fisher game.

Oh, I thought you meant here and the talk of FIsher overlooking Hobart.  My mistake.

AUKaz00

Eh, they do the "look ahead" and "most likely upset" schtick every week, so with three of them picking each category I figure we're bound to show up here or there in the Triple Takes.  I wasn't worried about them looking ahead, but I was scared of Carter et al knifing through our defense like they did numerous times this afternoon.  I did, however, reference the looking ahead bit because of yesterday's Triple Take.

Now I get to worry about a desperate Fisher side all week long...

pg04,   Not a problem.  Sometimes things don't come across as intended.  KaZoo's comment is what I believe triggered the situation.

The AU players are well aware of Coach Murray's alma mater.  I don't think you'll ever have to worry about his teams "looking past" Springfield.  Watched the game on the internet.  Thanks for the heads-up Pep.  I went through the link posted on the AU webpage and for some reason it wouldn't work.  When I went through the link you posted on the the message board it worked.  Thanks.

Pride just can't seem to win that big one. Congrats to Alfred.
