Things are about to get a little more crowded in the East:

The NCAA Division III membership committee announced this week that it has granted exploratory status to the Alfred State athletic program.   Alfred State submitted the NCAA application in January.

Under NCAA guidelines, 2012-13 will be an exploratory year in which Pioneer athletes will continue to participate in the NJCAA while the college works with the NCAA on meeting their requirements.  If granted, Alfred State will then move to probationary status in 2013-14 for the next four years as the department competes in NCAA DIII.

Obviously, there were other issues that contributed to the downfall, since Buff State went 7-4 in 2000 against mostly the same opponents, and maybe these current Bengals are in better shape to withstand that. I'm not predicting doom. I'm just saying that sometimes you bite off more than you can chew. There needs to be a balance between too easy and too hard. I hope the Bengals have found that middle ground where the schedule works to challenge the players and get them better, and doesn't lead to a lot of losses and discouragement. Frankly, this year's schedule is probably easier because teams like the Wick, IC, and Brockport aren't quite where they were in the early 2000's. I just don't want to see them go through another dark period due to overambitious scheduling...

Is it mere coincidence or does the presence of IC grad Jerry Boyes on the Bengal sidelines determine the success of the Buffalo State football program? Buff State was a perennial East Region power from 1991-2000 (Boyes was head coach from 1986-2000). As soon as he took over as A.D. and relinquished football coaching duties in 2001, the Bengals curled up in a corner and took a cat nap. Even with more realistic scheduling with the NJAC, the Bengals had no claws. With the return of Boyes to the sidelines, the Bengals are back on the prowl.  They've made steady progress the last three years and are ready to make some noise in the E8.

Good question. One would only think if Alfred can hold a Traffic Light Festival, certainly it can paint the light either purple or blue. But a better question might be, "Where will Kaz's allegiance be....his alma mater or his employer?" (How much do you like that job of yours, Kaz?)

They are headed in the right direction.
That said....How long are we going to say that this is a team that is going to have the breakout year?

they can break-out whenever they like.....just not ag the Cards..

Looks like they lose two senior starters on each side of the
ball, and maybe a couple of others to the maddening UC
attrition  of academic/personal stuff.
They will have a senior-laden team, so expectations are high,
relative to UC.
