Finally!!! (on two fronts)

http://www.brockport.edu/newsbureau/1713.html (Brockport Joins E8 for football in 2014)

http://www.brockport.edu/newsbureau/1714.html (Brockport to improve football field and stadium -- Including installation of lights and synthetic turf)

Exciting news...  Any thoughts? Especially on joining the E8... certainly a long time coming.

Well good news on the facilities.  I've always wondered how the SUNY higher ups decide which school gets what.  Cortland is obviosly the favorite son of the SUNY gods, seeing their facilities and all.

And I still have never gotten the whole Buff St/U Buffalo thing.  Both are SUNY?  But only one is SUNY Buffalo?

Cortland with some real administrative go-getters in the '90s had been seeking 'pork' $$ for several years with pie-in-the-sky dreams of upgrading athletic facilities .......and lo and behold one day they got their wish. Remember it well. Surprised the heck out of me when we first saw it come over the wire early one morn ........ and surprised the hell out of them. Big bucks granted for Stadium Complex. Additional $$ raised to add even a more glorious look. And that it is!!

The Rev hasn't been home in a long time, so what I wrote below may be dated. If SUNY no longer operates the tiered system, forgive me for giving out of date commentary.

Just like California's UC-(city) versus CSU-(city) or CSC-(city) SUNY has a two-tier system where there were the University and the State University College-(city). In most states, University of (State) was the acadmic institution and (State) State University is the teachers college that was transformed into a major university after the war. The two prime examples are Michigan and Arizona. UM and UA are much better schools than MSU and ASU. Same goes for Buffalo: SUNY Buffalo was always the academic university (they have the original manuscript for Joyce's Ulysses!) and State University College at Buffalo was historically the teacher's college, i.e. much less academically rigorous. (Disclaimer: The Rev went to ASU for grad school, but has to admit that U of A is the better school overall.)

As Far as Cortland goes: as long as The Rev can remember SUC-Cortland has always been the school to go to for Phys Ed, with Ithaca being the choice for Phys Ed majors from wealthier families. (i.e. Those with an aversion to being from a "SUNY" school.) I think their reputation as being the chief source of Phys Ed teachers, and with sports related programs being so famous, they earned their beautiful facilities. Just a guess--as I do not know the mind of the Regents.

The Rev, despite having gone to Hobart, never understood why some of his fellow New Yorkers had an aversion to SUNY schools. I think it was sheer snobbery.

This is the reason SUNY Binghamton, et al., are now Binghamton University, etc. The SUNY label prevented them from getting the respect they deserved. Sad. By all measures Binghamton, Buffalo, Stony Brook, Albany, and Geneseo are excellent universities, while Oswego, Oneonta, Cortland, etc, all have some noteworthy programs and are really good for training teachers.

It's really a three tiered system (well 4 or 5 if you start counting CUNY and the community colleges).  Albany, Binghamton, Buffalo and Stony Brook are University Centers.  They're the research centers of the SUNY system.  Then come all the "State College at [Blank]" which as the Rev points out are focused more on teaching than research.  And finally there are the "State College at [Blank] School of Technology" which were associate degree schools like Alfred State, Canton, Delhi, Moo'ville, etc. that provide technical training but have been expanding to provide 4 year programs over the past 15-20 years.

What a coincidence that we were talking about SUNY schools. I'm on my way to a meeting at Korea Coast Guard headquarters in Incheon and I just saw a sign for "SUNY Korea".
No kidding.

The world is getting smaller by the day. Pep knows that Alfred University has been dabbling with establishing programs in Asia. And, AU received a huge donation from Kazuo Inamori, founder of Kyocera, and its engineering school is named the Inamori School of Engineering. AU also is host to the Confucius Institute, which promotes Chinese culture here in the USA.

(AUKaz00 is no relation to Kazuo Inamori).

Pep, I just read on the AU website that the Ceramics MFA is ranked #1 in the country!!  But back to football.  Is there anything "in the air" out your way concerning a young high school quarterback who is graduating and is from the city east of Almond?  I have spoken to a couple of professional colleagues in the area who know the young man well who claim that his first choice is AU but that he really enjoyed his visit to Fisher (ouch).

Hope you have had a wonderful winter.

Rochester suburb vs a cave in the mountains?

Tough choice!

The views expressed in the above post do not represent the views of St. John Fisher College, their athletic department, their coaching staff or their players. I am an over zealous antagonist that does not have any current connection to the institution I attended.

For some, it is a tough choice.  We'll see.

A cave in the mountains sounds better.

I agree, even though I didn't end up at a cave in the mountains

Nestled away in the Empire State Hills...to Pep, is Home Sweet Home! (and yes, you can get garbage plates in Alfred, along with subs, pizzas, burgers, wings, etc.)
