Didnt catch the game and havent a chance to check the other discussions but did you guys see the RPI kicker was 5-5 with a 50 yarder this weekend?

That's pretty astounding. Also kicked a 37-yarder, 40-yarder, and 45-yarder. I think it's safe to sat at least two of those kicks are out of the range of most D-III kickers, so that's a huge weapon.

Speaking of Alfred, their new quarterback by way of Ithaca, Dom Scavo had an uneven first game, with two picks, and a fumble he didn't lose. It will be interesting to see how his season progresses

They have been re running the Buff St Brockport game on Time Warner Sports . It's worth a watch. Exciting even if you know the score. Look for Buff St's "quad no backs" set they ran an entire series. Never seen that before. It's probably on once a day.

Must have never seen Widener play.

Nope. That's why I said.."never seen that before" (not the formation..but the running of it for about 8 straight plays) I didn't say it has never been done.

On the other hand, last year you caught them totally by surprise.  While coaches always stress 'play them one at a time, and take every opponent seriously', I'm sure many of the players expected a total walkover.  No sneakin' up of 'em this year! ;)

I'd love to see the Bengals do it again, but I suspect UWW win win it by at least 3 scores.

I fear you will have to count field goals as scores for the 3 scores prediction. I think 9-0 or something similar is more likely than a 3 td margin. In fact I think a Buff St victory is more likely than a UWW 3 td margin victory.  :'(

I think you're going to see a lot more points this year. Last year, I thought Kacz was a one-week wonder. This year though, with most of his offensive skill players back, I think he'll be better. Also, even if U-WW has offensive issues, Buffalo State's secondary leaves a lot to be desired in the being good department. I don't see this being a shutout-type game, though given Buff State's desire to play to its opponents level at all times, I suspect U-WW is in for a game. 24-20 Whitewater

Franks is the real deal. This kid is top ntoch especially for D3 where anything over 25-30 yards is a stretch. What a weapon Franks will be for the Engineers this season.

Yes indeed. I've always thought kickers were vastly overrated in D-3, and that the most dangerous thing is having a kicker hit one from 35 because then you wind up trying to have him replicate it all year and he goes 1-for-5 on kicks beyond 34 yards. But a kicker who consistently does it? Huge.

I don't know what the kicks looked like, and that DOES have a lot to do with how he is viewed at a higher level, but those field goals are impressive for a D1 kicker.

ITH radio

Franks is a well spoken and smart kid too.  From Carmel, CA of all places.  Enjoyed having him on the show last Sunday in the 8:10 (40 mins in) time slot:

Let's just say the kicks not only had the distance but they likely would have hit the roof in a domed stadium. (Why the heck didn't they put the dome in when they rebuilt Merrill Field?) Every kick looked the same....high and plenty of distance. Heck, the poor ball boy had to retrieve the first quarter 31-yarder from the Canacadea Creek a quarter mile downstream. He averaged 65 yards on 7 kickoffs, was credited with two touchbacks, only because AU return men brought a few of them out. Pep thought he was the real deal.

Pep checked the stats from the AU-RPI 2012 encounter. Franks averaged 59.2 yards on five kickoffs, with two touchbacks, so he's improved over last season.

Reynolds, who was our kicker from 04-07, was impressive. He could stretch out to 50 and 55 on good days. But I dont remember him getting a shot during a game, which is way different. This Franks kid is impressive. I know what a weapon Reynolds was, so I bet RPI is very very comfortable when they cross the 50. Hitting the 35 of enemy territory and you know youre coming away with at least 3? Not many teams can say that at any level. Props to him.

I havent gotten a chance to see Scavo play but turning the ball over is a critical error for a QB. First thing Puccio ever asked us during a QB meeting...

"What can we do, that the defense can't? Punt.

Throwing it away is better than giving it away. Hopefully he can limit his mistakes and play to the advantage of Alfred's always stout defense. He's talented so Pooch will have plenty to work with. I definitely expect him to develop well. Alfred has a relatively mature offensive scheme and it hinges on the QB. It can be tough to get a full grasp in just a short amount of time.
"In this life, you don't have to prove nothin' to nobody but yourself. And after what you've gone through, if you haven't done that by now, it ain't gonna never happen."
