0-4

Its hard to even look at that record and then look at the schedule and realize that not only having a losing record will happen, but the reality of an 0fer season is a possibility.

This program has taken not only a step back but a huge fall.
Go .500 and you shake it off as a tough year---brush yourself off and look to next season.
0,1 or 2 wins and this program needs to really take inventory of what it wants, and what wholesale changes need to take place.
"Been there, done that"...As a Union fan I remember way back in the 2010 season when Union lost week 4, and looked disorganized and uninspired doing it, saying "something's wrong, they might not win another game all year". I was right, they lost their last six. Things had changed. The down slide culminated in an 0-10 season in 2015... something unthinkable to Union loyal fans, alumni and especially former players. The why is debatable. Players not good enough? Poor effort and execution? No money for recruiting? Bad coaching? All of these and more?...Union made a complete coaching change in 2016. Has it worked? Well on the field results are positive and coupled with a drastic easing of the OOC schedule, Union is now 3-1. The team's playing better, it's more fun to watch and the controversy is on hold. They could actually be a factor this year in the Liberty League. Is Fisher where Union was in 2010? If so, it may take awhile. It's hard to face the reality but it keeps hitting you in the face, loss after loss every week. Maybe they can right the ship faster than Union did,  albeit tough in the highly competitive E8. So yeah, "wholesale changes" may need to take place.

Its crazy to think,
I saw this program grow from a club team to the perennial doormats, to the national contenders- now down to an 0-4 start with no hope in sight.
Has it come full circle- no. there is no way Fisher reverts to the doormat status, but some long hard looks need to take place as this is literally a lost season.

AU jayvees defeated Onondaga Community College this afternoon on a very hot Merrill Field at Yunevich Stadium. Final score was AU 17, OCC 6. Pep sat on the shady visitors side (as did a good number of AU fans) to escape the sun.
Pep +k for all JV scores/updates.....looks like Alfred has a decent pipeline of Saxon Warriors

Onondaga Community College's team was as I anticipated...a lineup of raw talent desiring D1 looks...but they were missing a couple of coaches of having any discipline or order.
On Saxon Warriors! On to Victory!
...Fight, fight for Alfred, A-L-F, R-E-D!

Pine should have been starting ahead of Garcia two years ago. Nice win for the Hawks, and another loss in what's been a disaster of a season for St. John Fisher.

Brockport wins again. Special season brewing there.

And maybe at Buff State as well

I like this bomber guy!! 3-0 start is a good thing. Problem Is that Alfred is up next.  And to be honest, I don't think my boys have ever beaten them. Ever!! Hoping for the best.

Go BENGALS!!!
Congrats to Buff State on the 24 second half points to put away a solid RPI squad. Looks like a great game coming up against Alfred. Good Luck to the future LL member!

Thanks Bartman!  Clearly this Saturdays game vs Peps Saxons will be the most telling predictor of exactly how far BOYES Boys have come. Going 0-5 since joining the E8 in 2012, vs Alfred, is definitely on the  minds of many of the BENGAL faithful. This years team seems to have developed a confidence that hasnt been seen in previuos years. They are spending more time in the weight room...film room....and attending other sports teams (i e women's soccer and men's soccer have both seen an increased level of support from our Big boys at home games).

Having met Pep last year at Coyer field, I know 1st hand, that the Saxon faithful are some of the largest and most respectful fans in football. Its gonna be tough test for my beloved BENGALS when they travel to Yunevich Stadium. According to the Alfred website its 5 days, 18 mins and 19 seconds till kickoff (nice) http://gosaxons.com/index.aspx?path=football. Here's to hoping for the best!!!!!

Go BENGALS

Would love to have you make the trip from the big city out here to Mayberry! You're right about the "largest fans," Bengals...Pep needs to lose some weight! Weather is, (thank God!) going to be cooler...high of 58 and cloudy. Pep has gone through a ton of sunblock to keep the band from burning up the past two weeks.

Pep has nothing but respect for Coach Jerry Boyes and His Big Boys. Kyle Hoppy is a difference maker and the Saxons didn't face him last year in the rain at Coyer Field. The year before at Yunevich Stadium, it wasn't until he went down with an injury late in the game that the Saxons caught fire and rallied for a 29-26 win after trailing 26-14 after three quarters.

Pep will never forget the 2012 game when the Bengals, sky high after knocking off three-time D3 national champ UW-Whitewater, 7-6, came home for their Empire 8 debut. RB Tyler DeRosa broke his leg in the first half so on came Chuck Beckwith with Austin Dwyer handing off to him out of the wildcat and the beast ran wild....three long TD runs on three carries.

AU is a different team this year, having graduated a ton of talent from the Elite 8 run. But the recruits seem to have assimilated well and it's a pretty cohesive group. Utica (one of the best 1-3 teams around) was very tough and Pep expects the same or more from Buffalo State. Pep is looking forward to a good game.

Stay tuned!

Bengalsrule.  Are you going to make it down to Mayberry?  I love it when there are lots of visitors.  If you make it, come say hello.  Row 13,  50 yard line.   8-)

Would love to make it there!  I've made that Journey many years when my now, 31 year old son Eric attended Alfred State( across the street) and played basketball for them. I actually made the journey to A U last year for Buff State vs Alfred...BASKETBALL game.  However this Saturday we will be celebrating our youngest, David, who is turning 16 years old. I'll be tuned in online though.

I know you and Pep will have the crowd rocking!  Alfred fans have always been a class act and some the LOUDEST fans in E8 football ( no need for Pep and company to lose weight on my account  :) ), with the LARGEST crowds ( sounds better Pep?)  ;D

Go BENGALS!

Upstate

Saw a bad season coming with no Fiutko and no talent on the DL but didn't see this bad of a train wreck. Was hoping that the WR's/RB's could make more plays for this team but it's hard to do with no QB.

Offensively there's not much they can do other than go to a full out run first offense like they were from 2002-2007. Those years they were a primarily a zone run team that ran their base offense from under center. They have a dynamic RB in Chambers but they've failed to get him going early because of their insistence on running from the shotgun.

Look the zone read from shotgun can work, but not if you're guards can't get push on the DT/NT. They need to keep that DL honest and not have them pinning their ears back and trying to get up-field to disrupt things. There's no threat of a pulling guard on a trap, or a down block from a counter play. Most of the time opposing DL just gets up-field and blows up the play, occasionally they hit on a run but that's more on Chambers than the OL. The guards need help, they need to use the center/guard combo blocks on inside zones/counters/traps to get push on the DL.

Put the QB back under center, because lets face it, these QBs aren't scaring anyone with their arms this year. Run your traps, counters, tosses and inside/outside zones from under center. Then use the run fakes to take shots down the field or boot the QB the opposite way. A QB's best friend is play action, especially a young QB.

You have a good sized TE that's 6'4", 240lbs in Stehle. Use him as an extra blocker! You don't even have to have a traditional FB, just go 11 personnel and shift him across the formation or keep him on the edge to try and seal the end on outsize zones/tosses.

Defensively, they look to have two really good, young DE's in White (6'2", 220lbs that had 8 Sacks as a HS senior playing in Florida last year) and Peters (6'2", 245lbs). Yes they're young, but they look to be very athletic so put these two on the edges and let them grow. Screw seniority, this is a rebuilding season. Move Cleary/Horne to the three technique and convert one of the 7 Freshman/Sophomore offensive lineman that are 280lbs or heavier to your NT. There is clearly no one on this current DL that can play NT, even in their 3 man front.

They're getting gashed on the ground with this 3 man front for a few years now, you can't keep doing this and expect the defense to be productive. If you want to go to a 3 man front on obvious passing downs and bring pressure from one of your 37 LBers or Safeties, sure go for it.

They need to recognize this **** isn't working and find a solution for both this year and in the future.

Without the usual swagger from the Fisher faithful the E8 Board has lost much of it's entertainment value. I hope the 2017 Cardinals can turn it around.

The swagger is just brewing for future runs once they turn things around.  We'll be insufferable again, I assure you!

Good luck to the E8 teams today!  Fisher is taking on the bye this week.  Hoping we can get our first win there.
