Do you think all these new locker rooms showing up all across the D3 map will smell any better than the old ones?    ::)

hey Pep.....now I must admit to laughing out loud on this one, +k.....it also brought back those pungent odors hidden in my olfactory memory......in high school we had a few that refused to wash the tee shirt worn under the pads until we lost a game(we were undefeated) and at Hobart there were a few that said they wouldn't wash the tee until they won a game(0-8)....I can tell you, win or lose those tee shirts smelled the same no matter  the vintage of the locker room.....oh by the way, I may take you up on the Hobart-Alfred JV game on 9/2....will be in touch, and no worries, I will wear a clean tee shirt

+k back at you....had to READ your reply out loud here at the library (not sure how Pep ever landed a library job...been reprimanded by faculty members for being too loud!). Hope you can make it to Merrill Field/Yunie Stadium. Would be a pleasure meeting an ol' Pumpkinhead.

One thing to bring us through the last part of no football:

What's the best game you've attended that your team lost?

One thing to bring us through the last part of no football:

What's the best game you've attended that your team lost?

That one's easy. Bridgeport 14, Alfred 8....season opener in 1973, two seasons after Bridgeport (8-1) was selected ahead of Alfred (8-0) to play unbeaten Hampden-Sydney in the Knute Rockne Bowl in Atlantic City, NJ.

Bridgeport came in riding the nation's longest win streak at 20+ games, while Alfred over the same period was 22-1.
Halftime score 0-0. Bridgeport scores in third quarter to take 7-0 lead. Saxons finally score on a QB rollout (set up by a controversial 4th down pass interference penalty against Bridgeport) with 20 seconds remaining. AU goes for the win rather than tie and gets a 2-point conversion pass completed to go up 8-7.

After students, some in a estimated crowd of 6,900, were commanded to return to their seats, the Purple Knights return the kickoff to their 37 yard line. Following an incompletion, the QB escapes a sack, throws a pass to a tightly guarded WR who pushes off the two AU defenders...the ball is tipped by one of them into the arms of the WR, who then runs to paydirt. A PAT later, the game is over at 14-8.

A year later, AU President Leland Miles leaves Alfred to accept the presidency at Bridgeport where he had served as a dean prior to coming to Mayberry. After the 1974 season, facing Title IX and huge budget crunch, Miles' administration drops football (the program consumed 3/4 of the athletic budget) and they've never fielded a football team since.

That push on the final play cost Alfred the game...the narrow win may have cost Bridgeport its football program as Miles saw with his own eyes that Little Alfred, with one full-time coach, could compete with a DII fully funded program.

The best regular season loss I witnessed was the October, 1971 battle of the undefeated Alfred and Hobart teams in front of 7000 fans at the old Boz. Hobart's new coach, George Davis inherited a team coming off an 0-8 season, but had won their first three of 1971 against Kenyon, SLU and Hamilton. Alfred was the top dog in the region led by Pep's favorite, Coach Yunevich. From NYT: {GENEVA, N. Y., Oct. 16 (AP) —Three touchdowns in the fourth quarter carried unbeaten Alfred University to a 28‐21 vic tory over Hobart College today. It was the Saxons' fifth victory and the Statesmen's first defeat after three triumphs.Hobart led, 14‐0, in the first quarter and held a 21‐7 margin at half‐time. But in the game's last six minutes, Alfred's Young brothers sparked a rally when Robert faked a punt and passed to Charlie for a 76‐yard touch down play. That was followed by an 8‐ yard scoring run by the quarter back, Jim Moretti (it was his second touchdown) and a 1‐ yard buck into the end zone in the last 19 seconds by a sopho more, Henry Bzdak. }The Hobart faithful were exhausted trying to root on the defense to hold the Saxons but were denied.
My own recollections on the best Playoff loss I witnessed to the reigning Stagg Bowl champion was posted on the Liberty League board in November 2016:
Well , I was at the game and was not influenced by the radio or video. I saw some really normal D3 football fans that drove 5 hours that frankly looked a little nervous when Hobart made it 21-21 late in the 3rd quarter . Damn if it didn't feel like a Union vs. Hobart game of old with great D3 football being played , but nothing like that elite team  beat downs we have experienced and may have expected(we saw it at at Mount in 2008 and  St. Thomas in 2012). How could Hobart be here ,tied and looking good against Mount Union? They said this was a young Mount team but it seems the only Freshman is the QB and he looks more composed than the Mounts Seniors and Juniors .  Our lines are not overwhelmed like we were against St. Thomas in 2012, our receivers are getting open on the short stuff although the Raiders dbs are the best we have seen this season , and heck we are getting more rush yards on the ground than we got against half the Liberty League this season with an OLine that was built to pass protect , not run.. We are high fiving in the stands and quite frankly can't believe it...Hobart Nation and the team are feeling it. ........Oh , but wait a minute.....the weather is turning..... the wind is really picking up and we better get the ball back before the fourth quarter  because the ugly Lake winds will be upon us and our great passing game will be in a wind tunnel...the wrong way. Mount gets the ball again and that young QB doesn't seem to be flustered and our defense seems to be stuck in cement while that damn #1 keeps making moves that ,frankly the god-like "all decade team" Kmic from 2008 couldn't make. The Mount scores as #1 bounces out easily and we are behind 28-21. Now the wind is really kicking up going North to South....we could be doomed by nature and a field direction decision following the coin toss...our magical comebacks will be severely challenged as the Mount DC knows now to cut off all those short passes into the wind(the ones we completed earlier as they protected the top very well) and force Sweeney to pass to the outside...heck they have an extra defender... Maria....the wind......Now Mount kicks-off  ...oh oh the kick gets held up and our  boys do not anticipate the ball stalling midair....it looks like an intentional mid level on-side kick...but I don't think so, the wind is that strong....The Mount recovers....but our D holds them this time, they are playing tough.....c'mon coaches we got 40 seconds left in the 3rd Q to get down the field WITH THE WIND and score again .. fling it to the mercurial Shed...give it a shot...but no.....Hobart calls 2 run plays to Letivia for nice yardage but we shoulda taken a shot......The Fourth Q now and the boys put up 4 fingers.....we open the 4th with 2 incomplete passes into the wind(Now they give up on the run?), a good punt by Rio... the Mount moves the ball chews up time,  but the D holds 'em to a FG(31-21)....we get the ball and  go 3 and out .....but, no  Rio Schmidt steals a first down on a fake Punt(he looks like the RB he is fighting for the 1st down)..... THEN Sweeney gets pressure and throws a the ball into that damn wind and it flutters into the Raider hands ....The defense valiantly stops them again 3 and out, but why no time outs by our coaching staff as we lose valuable time?....we get the ball back and another INT, tipped into the hand of the NT??  ....Then , the Mount does what a champion does they seal it with  one more TD to make it 38-21 with that damn #1 skipping around for the score........but in my mind the real score  was The Mount 28, Hobart 21...the Wind 10....if we had the wind behind us in the fourth....who knows......yea I know it was a long shot ...but it was there ...we had our opportunities...The Mount was human today.... Hobart showed well and we had a very competitive game for 3 Quarters against the incumbent Champs until that damn wind took away the chance for one more cardiac kids comeback.
Thanks to both teams for a great game , and thanks to the Hobart team and coaches for a great season.....

Just saw the 2018 Fisher roster with some notable additions and subtractions.
QB - noticed the new transfer from Albany
WR-noticed no Will Coon

There were others but those stuck out at me.
Looks like a good roster- here is hoping that the D shores up and a new (or any) QB has the ability to find some pretty talented WRs

Bombers798891

What exactly happened with Coon? Did he just have a nagging injury that never cleared up? He caught passes in six games, so he was clearly healthy enough to play. But no production. I remember something similar happening with IC's Joel Lynch in 2013/14. Went from 41-530-6 to 12-115-0.

Also, this isn't a knock but an observation: I feel like Fisher's had terrible luck with skill players recently. Coon is the most recent example, but Fusco never came close to replicating his 2014, and didn't even hit that yardage total when you combine his '15 and '16. Chambers missed half of 2016 thanks to injury. Collichio was banged up in '15 and '17. Even Nigolian, if I remember correctly, was basically a decoy in the big game against IC in '14 thanks to injury. Am I missing anyone else?

One that comes to mind is Colin Fiutko, the QB that showed a lot of potential as a Freshman replacing an injured Matt Naton. It looked like Fisher had a solid option to replace Naton after he graduated, but an injury ended that optimism.

QB play was a major problem for Fisher last year. In my view the D has been on the decline since Fox left, and with a young QB that struggled to move the ball it finally caught up with Fisher last year. Hopefully they can move the ball more effectively this year, and the personnel on D starts to fit what the new DC is trying to do.
GO FISHER!!!

Just one other note from looking at the Fisher roster. There is a lot of what appears to be talented Sophomores on the list. Several players I recognize from area high schools and have heard a lot of good things about. Fisher will be young in several positions this year.
GO FISHER!!!

Watch the transfer from U Albany at QB- kids highlights show a gunslinger and runner to boot.
The loss of Coon stings but be on the watch for Pat Galer.
Kid was out of Whitesboro here in town and was a beast in Section III- He played well last year as a freshman albeit sparingly and this could be a soph season to really watch.
