As a parent of 4 you have to look into EVERYTHING when it comes to education.
Sticker price, Grad rates, placement rates etc.
It always drove me nuts when fellow parents would rip on cost of private Higher Ed and applaud state edus
One word for any parents out there looking-
If everything is equal- look for the hidden fees and conditions of "free tuition"
Excelsior is amazing- but holy smoke read the fine print!

So very true. I have 2 adult children and there are so many factors involved. And there is no such thing as apples to apples comparison. It's a fruit salad. Apples to oranges to grapes to pineapple to cherries etc....drives you nuts. And it isn't always about money. You want your kid to be in a place where there is a fit and they can become successful (by whatever definition they use to define success).

My son decided on a technical college and has a degree in Network Security. My daughter started at JMU and transferred to CNU after one semester. Long story but she couldn't chase her dream while at JMU. She graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in Economics and became a professional dancer. She's old (32) and now choreographs and teaches. I like to ask her how it feels to be "washed up" at 32!!!

Both kids had students loans that, fortunately, were paid off quickly. I am so glad that part of life is behind me. Best of luck to you and your kids!

Cheers!

Cheers to you as well.

Between their pricing practices, the ridiculous lack of transparency, and the student loans, there's just no industry in America that gets away with predatory behavior like higher education.  It's shameful and a total disservice to students and parents.  Different acceptance rates based on what you can pay, absurd sticker price/net cost dynamics that hide the ball, nickle and diming kids on transfer credits, endless junk fees, and perhaps worst of all, making kids pay for a dozen GenEd classes they neither want nor need.  It's no wonder that the percentage of young adults who think going to college is important has dropped from 74% to 41% in the last decade.

Interesting connection. The Voice of The Captains, who calls the CNU football and basketball games is a St. Bonaventure alum and used to call the basketball games for the Bonnies. He grew up in Olean. His father-in-law is in the St. Bonaventure Hall of Fame...Robert Sassone.

Quiet? Let me know how that works. We've had family members and friends living with us almost non stop since the kids were in college. Still do.

I totally agree!! My biggest gripe with higher education is this "tenure" nonsense! How about "Do your job, keep your job"? I know a few tenured profs that should be long gone!!!

The E8 looks like a total mess outside of Cortland.

For a team that made the 2nd round of the playoffs last year, Utica is letting lesser teams hang around way too long. Morrisville and Alfred both got beaten pretty solidly by Hobart. Their 62 points against Hilbert non-withstanding, Fisher's offense is awful and has no hope of hanging with Cortland, neither does Brockport's (26 passing yards????). Hartwick is just...Hartwick

To say Cortland is going to cruise to the conference title is an understatement. In my opinion, I doubt they'll win any conference game by less than 30 points. Susquehanna is going to be a good test for the playoff run we can expect from the Red Dragons.

I watched the Port /Sus game earlier and outside of the blocked FG at the end of the game by Port, It was probably the most bizarre game I've seen in a while! A final score of 5-3 was a real possibility until Sus got the ball back with just over a minute to play! A Port 1st would have ended it! Neither offense looked like they wanted to move forward! Not sure if it had anything to do with defensive prowess or just horrible execution, or both! I'm interested to see what the Cortland offense can do next week!

Great article on Cortland QB Zac Boyes! Sounds like he has his head on straight! On a side note, former Cortland QB Ryan McCarthy from the 2000 season is currently on the Boston College staff as "Assistant to the HC".

I think you'd also find today's segment of In the (D3FB) Huddle podcast with Frank Rossi and James Baker very interesting as it contains an interview with Cortland WR Cole Burgess (starts at 9:50 mark). There's also a poignant and meaningful discussion (30:00 mark) with the father of a former Wabash player Evan Hansen who tragically took his own life mid-season in 2018. Evan was found later to be suffering from CTE possibly caused by concussions...https://www.facebook.com/D3Huddle/videos/1030870534591343

Appreciate the read, thank you! I had a really great conversation with Coach Fitzpatrick and Zac this week,  Cortland football is in really good place from a leadership standpoint and I hope that came through in the column.

Tough pill to swallow today! Cortland did everything they needed to do to hand it away in the 2nd half...and Susquehanna is a solid team! Fumbled a punt return in the 3rd to give a short field TD and then To close the game out with like 2 min to play, we coughed up a Kick return at our own 30. In between the 2 turnovers were 2 failed drives. Like 3 and outs! Horrible time to run out of gas! Susquehanna qb was an absolute force! Kid is nasty! This game was a mirror image of the Randolph Macon playoff game last year! I guess a wake up call was needed and being out of conference isn't the worst thing.

One of the worst Cortland setbacks in memory!!
This one squarely on the coaches ........totally reversed momentum with their conservative scheme after building 14 point lead over a very good Susquehanna squad whose qb is terrific ......running and passing. RDragons' braintrust turned Z. Boyes loose .....until they didn't. Played with their backs to the wall in the late going ..... tough, tough loss.

Prior to the start of the year, I mentioned that what I needed to see from Cortland was their ability to respond after being punched in the mouth by a good team.

This game is exactly what I was talking about.

Cortland failed in all three phases down the stretch.

Two straight three and outs. Two extremely quick touchdowns allowed. And the special teams was a disaster, with short punts, penalties, and a turnover.

Thankfully, the Empire 8 is pretty weak, and Cortland should win it. But this is not the kind of game that inspires a deep playoff run

XREDDRAGON77

Nope! Not at all! Return man made some suspect decisions earlier ( think it was the same kid) on a punt or 2. Lost to learn from.

So, Alfred University football will be playing at Catholic University of America this Saturday. Pep probably not making the trip. There was a day not too long ago when the Saxons were in the nation's capital for the final game of its season facing a talented Catholic squad hellbent on making the playoffs.

Thanks to an Alfred University media guide (haven't seen one of those in years!), Pep had a phone number for the CUA press box at Cardinal Stadium. Someone was kind enough to answer and gave a very entertaining personalized play-by-play over the final wild minutes of the Saxons' 35-29 crazy win over the home team. Later...much later, Pep will add, learned that it was none other than the D3football.com guru himself, Pat Coleman! Pat's description of the plays was just enough to paint the picture in Pep's mind.

Pat, will you be in the press box at CUA this Saturday? If not, I'll go to the back-up plan of watching from home on FloSports. The times they are a changin'!

Thanks, Mr. Coleman, for all you've done for small college football and bringing it altogether into an amazing package.

On Saxon Warriors!

On Saxon Warriors! On to Victory!
...Fight, fight for Alfred, A-L-F, R-E-D!

Pat Coleman

Good times. Indeed, I will not be in the press box, and Scooter Hendricks will not be taking snaps, and Derek Comestro will not be getting carries.

That was my second game as SID -- before then, I had indeed been the radio guy.
