You referring to the "local paper" in Utica?

The local paper in Alfred, the SUN, (they call it the SUN because in Alfred it only comes out once a week) rides the AU Pep Bandwagon...

I was referring to the ITHACAN and the opinion articles placed by professors in the paper

re: Yankee Fans

Get to work this morning, already in a bad mood because of the Mets and rain.... so far 5 yankee fans have made a special trip over to my office to gloat that the Mets lost.  A**holes.  As a group they all are.  First of all, give me a couple days and second they made it to game seven on a bunch of no-name (rookie) arms.

re: Utica....I agree with Johnny Utah, they need to show some sort of improvement yearly before you can say they are headed in the right direction.  One year of improvement followed by one (or more) slipping the other way is not a program going in the right direction.  Do I think they have the tools to eventually be successful?  Yes, but they aren't on the right track yet.

Hey, it's taken 111 years for Alfred's football program to get to where it is today!

How long have the Bombers been competing on the gridiron?

I know PepBand will correct my Alfred history but, that program seems to be right where it has been for about 10 years.  Not too good, not too bad.  Last year they were a little above where they usually are thanks to Brenton Brady, this year they have dipped a bit back to the middle.  Before Brady was there they were a little under where they usually are.  Nevertheless, they really haven't been a contender or a bottom feeder in some time.

As for Utica, I don't think Fisher is a good example of what can happen.  Fisher's program got a shot in the arm with a huge recruiting draw...NFL facilities.  I agree that it is too early to tell exactly what is going on at UC but, it is hard to argue that they are headed in the right direction.  If they are bringing in so many deep classes, like the UC guys are suggesting, then why the big letdown when they graduated kids last year.  They should continue to improve and progress...right?

Utica guys, how good is the local recruiting?  I know its always hard to convince kids to stay home, but there is a lot of talent coming out of the Utica High Schools....is Utica at a point where they have a shot at some of it?  John Gaglardi says "I can field a National Championship team from a 70 mile radius of St Johns"

A question has been nagging me this season.  Why is Elmer Newsome not our workhorse back anymore?  Have you heard?

AU dipped to a modern-day low in 1997 with a 2-8 season (sans adequate recruiting w/Moretti taking AD job and then being asked to remain as football coach for a year). Since Murray's arrival, Saxons have been a .500 middle-of-the-pack program until present run of 8-3 in 2004, 9-2 in 2005, currently 5-1 in 2006.

Certainly Brenton Brady had a lot to do with the Saxon success but AU has been bringing in 75 freshmen and transfers every year for the past three years... some of them start their first year. Among them there may emerge some more BBs. Murray has an outstanding cast of coaching characters. From everything I hear from the kids, they like the coaches, they're working hard and it's starting to pay off with "W"s.

I'd have to say AU has taken some strides forward beginning in '04...how far forward will be determined Oct. 28, Nov. 4 and Nov. 11 at Merrill Field. Win or lose, Alfred is building character in the quality young men who are part of the Saxon football program.
