maybe an interesting side note for some.

This weekends Ithaca vs Springfield game will be coach Welch vs. coach Welch. Obviously Mike Welch is ithaca's coach, but Jeff Welch, his son, and former Ithaca reciever and captain (graduated in 2005), is a graduate assistant at springfield and will be coaching against his father and former team on saturday.

I posted this a few pages back but it fell under the radar.  Not only is Jeff Welch the grad assistant coach handling the LBs, but former Bomber Brett Campbell also returns to South Hill on the SC coaching staff as a grad assistant in charge of the secondary.

The last two Bomber grad assistants I can remember on SC's staff both lost in their return to Butterfield.  Abe Ceesay and Mark McDonough.

I'll put the specifics together overnight, but using the regional polls, standings and playoff slots as a guide, there appears to be currently, at most, 62 teams vying for the 32 playoff slots -- with 6 teams vying for 4 Pool B slots and 56 teams vying for 28 Pool A/C slots.

However, in Pool A/C, because of conferences already double-covered in the polls or conferences that will not get more than the auto-bid based on win/loss records, less than 39 scenarios exist for those 28 slots.  I say "less than" because, for instance, the E8 is quadruple-represented in the East Poll.  However, no more than three of those teams would likely be selected.  Thus, that should eliminate a "scenario."

Other scenarios may be able to be eliminated based on head-to-head games, but that hasn't been factored in yet, except in cases of teams not in the polls but with legitimate chances still to win their conferences.  A scenario is based only on  conference overall outlooks and not "which of the 3 XYZ conference teams will be chosen for the likely 2 slots XYZ will get"...for instance, not whether Ithaca would be chosen over SJF, etc., but rather whether the E8 would receive 2, 3 or 4 slots in its entirety.

Finally, based inside these numbers, there are four conferences in which a team with a legitimate chance to win the conference is not represented in the polls AND would cause the potential for a possible Pool A team that would lose and still deserve a Pool C slot.  If these underdog teams end up losing their conferences, this would eliminate additional scenarios.

Long story short is that the playoffs are taking pretty good shape even with three weeks to go.  While there are individual questions and concerns in many conferences, the questions appear to be less division-wide-issue based than normal since there are three weeks for things to play out.  Like I said, specifics will come later.

Thx Frank - just make sure you are making time for other things besides coming up with playoff scenarios (like women, drinking, etc)

I caught the very end.

Bill Pidto: Thank you very much Chris.

Sharpe:  Before I go, I was was wondering if you were aware that the word "live" is spelled out in all capital letters on the screen?  I never thought of it before but, my dad asked me to point it out.  Apparently, he was posting about it on some message board.  Anyway, I can see it here on the monitor too.  Why is it in all caps?

Pidto:  Back to the studio.

Frank-

Snag a blank index card. On the front side write the following:
"Turn over and read"

On the back, write the following:
"Turn over and read"

any chance that Utica will make the playoffs?

what kind of scenario would have to occur?  All teams forfit the rest of the season...?

morning mornign morning.... kir-plunk. punchin' in!

i looked in the crystal ball and it shows a remnence of what occured last night in the 6th happening saterday.   Kelly Gordon is blazing down the field on a Post Pattern as the safety slips in an awkward attempt to play defense.  Juvon throws 60 yards for the TD.  Gordon then does a Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader jumping split to celebrate.

After the game the media ask ,  'Kelly where did you learn that endzone dance?"
his reply,  "Lumpy showed me"  ::) :o
