except for the fact that shen is one of the best schools in the area...along with Niskayuna, Saratoga, North Colonie....these are all real good schools and give you good opurtountities for college...and then there's amsterdam....well what can we say  I made my way out of it and did well enough

Poor grammar and horrible spelling... it's just how he rolls.

super- noo doubt that Shen and SC are great schools.
Just too big for my taste.
NH is a top 100 hs in the nation and they only graduate 200+

hey ya'll laughed when tags made fun of my hometown...

rate of dumpiness

1)Utica equals very dumpy
2)Syracuse
3)Rochester
4)Albany
5)Buffalo equals little dumpy

Ok..now I have to weigh back in. Rochester more dumpy than Buffalo? No way...1m unemployed ex-steel workers will ensure that Buffalo is above Rochester (unemployed camera makers are classier than the coal smelters).

I live in Saratoga which is part of the "Capital District" (aka, Albany). It's probably one of the nicer parts of the state to live. Let's make this ranking a little more accurate.

Dumpiest places in NY (in descending order)

1) Olean
2) Jamestown
3) Malone
4) Watertown
5) Plattsburg/Potsdam
6) Utica/Rome
7) Binghamton
8) Endicott
9) Amsterdam
10) Geneva
11) Fredonia
8)

HA!

Malone.  A buddy of mine lived up there and I went home with him one weekend in College.  I wouldnt call this town a dump per se, but I can tell you I was shocked that a town like this even existed in the United States.  When we got out of the car in Malone, I felt like I got out of a time machine and entered 1983 all over again.  Great people in that town but man are things different.

Massena is another one of those towns stuck in the 1980s....

JU and friend get out of car in Malone, New York.  circa 1995 (1983 Malone years)

Senor RT: Your rankings are brutal for the Chautauqua-Allegheny Region with your top two "dumpiest" places from Cattaraugus and Chautauqua County. Heck, couldn't you have thrown in one of the backwoods towns in Allegany County for third to make it a 1-2-3 finish?

Incidentally, AUPepBand thoroughly enjoys Saratoga when attending the NYPA Spring Conventions there each year. Usually spend an evening playing pick-up hoops at the Y, where one year played with Yale grad whose folks own the Ripe Tomato and he now owns the Cherry Tomato, both very nice restaurants. AUPepBand opts out of a convention dinner for a visit to one of his places each spring.

AUPepBand loves Saratoga Springs....almost as much as he loves Alfred, NY!

BTW, RT:
Received a very nice letter from Pops Red Tackle. Glad it all worked out. And you'll love this.....AUPepBand received Christmas gift of an Alfred University hoody sweatshirt with "AUPEPBAND" on back and surname on the sleeve from AUPepBand Jr. Nice!

Sir Spiedie

I obviously don't know N.Y. crappy as well as you guys (although I did live in the Bronx), but I must say that having been from place to place in NY, you can tell that the bloom is of the rose in a lot of places. I will tell you that I was very impressed with the Saratoga area, and some parts of Albany are really nice. From a Florida perspective, Albany and environs make sense for Florida kids wanting to go to school in NY state because you can fly Southeast non-stop from Tampa or Orlando into Albany cheap. I will also say that Oneonta looked like a very nice place to go to school, but I wouldn't want to try and make a living there. What's up with St. Lawrence University? It seems like a beautiful place but very remote. What sort of kid (besides one with some money.) goes there? Do they have a competitive football team? I am kind of mystified  as to how the school is able to carry on. It must have alot going for it to overcome its location.

Sir Spiedie

You guys never did answer my original question. Do kids only know the schools aid package until after admittance? Thanks.

There are very very nice parts of the Capital Distict...  Saratoga is an incredible place to visit...not sure if I would want to live there year round because it becomes tourist invested over the summer....CERTAIN PARTS of Albany are nice...I double dog dare you to walk into Arbor Hill or Hamilton Hill at night...
