Hey AUPep, is Alfred in Spiedie Country?

Alfred is 125 miles WEST of Spiedie Country:

The spiedie (IPA: /spɪdɪ/) is a dish local to Broome County in the Southern Tier of New York State. Spiedie consists of cubes of chicken and pork, but it may also be made from lamb, veal, venison or beef. The meat cubes are marinated overnight or longer in a special spiedie marinade, then grilled carefully on spits over a charcoal pit. The freshly prepared cubes are served on soft Italian bread or a submarine roll, wood skewer and all, then drizzled with fresh marinade. The roll is used as an oven glove to grip the meat while the skewer is removed. Spiedie meat cubes can also be eaten straight off the wooden skewer or can be served in salads, stir fries, and a number of other dishes. The marinade recipe varies, usually involving olive oil, vinegar, and a variety of Italian spices and fresh mint.
Spiedie has been celebrated at the Spiedie Fest and Balloon Rally in Binghamton, New York, every August, since 1983. The annual event includes a spiedie cook-off in search of the best spiedie recipes. The spiedie and the Spiedie Fest were featured on an episode of The Food Network's "Unwrapped".

AUPepBand's oldest daughter lives in Spiedie Country, waiting on tables at a restaurant there in Binghamton.  How's that for spiedie research?

A spiedie response, no doubt!

In order to get up to speed on the E8, what is the consensus bitterest rivalry? Along the same line, what is the bitterest intra-NY rivalry period?

1) Cortland/Ithaca

then....

2) RPI/Union

then.....

3) Ithaca/SJF (used to be Ithaca/Buff St, and then Ithaca/Brockport)
4) Hobart/Union or Hobart/RPI (I think)

Fisher Alfred...and Fisher UofR are also big games...I would almost put Fisher/UofR ahead of Fisher/Ithaca because of the proximity between the schools...

You're the only dood on the board that doesn't know & accept that '57 can't spell.

Poor grammar and horrible spelling... it's just how he rolls.

does the fact that RPI/Union is the oldest collegiate matchup in NYS make it #1?

AUPepBand

How many times have RPI and Union met on the gridiron?

Not for someone who went to either Cortland or Ithaca  :)

Being someone who went to none of the colleges, I would say that the Cortland/Ithaca rivalry has been the hot one lately but I am not sure if this in and of itself beats the the longevity of the bitterness between RPI and Union? That's a tough call.

AUPepBand

When talking rivals, Alfred really has no big rival. Hobart could be the closest thing and, while there is very little love between AU and Fisher, it lacks the heritage to justify their animosity as a rivalry.

Alfred's biggest rival in days gone by was the University of Buffalo as Little Alfred was always a thorn in the side of the Bulls, always looking to the big-time despite having little success with the little guys.

Brockport has no real "rival" either, just kind of mini rivalries.... Fisher and Brockport has been heated lately...as has Brockport and Ithaca.

I guess the closest thing is the I-90 bowl with Buffalo State but we manage to crush them almost every year in the 2000's so it isn't too much of a rivalry anymore.  That's actually the 1 win the eagles get to retain this year!

AUPepBand

AUPepBand would conclude that the only game that would rival the Cortaca for top Upstate NY rivalry would be Union-RPI.

Although Ithaca/Fisher could start inching it's way closer to the top as time progresses.  We'll have to wait and see!  Maybe they should have a trophy...oh wait they usually do, it's called the E8 championship  :P
