As a point of reference, high school games in Central Florida will cost you $5.00 to get into, and usually another $5.00 to park. That applies even to students and small children. People don't know what a bargain a DIII game is. The flip side is when you don't charge much, people do not think it's worth much. Another question, are games always played during the day or some under the lights?

Sir Spiedie

Before I hear it, let me amend my statement to "SOME people  think if you do not charge much, it is not worth much."

It seems that the number of night games in the e8 is a small portion of the overall sched.  Most facilities have lights, but few use them enough.
It does create sched. headaches...

fisheralum91

guys- does that sound about right?

For a great facility Fisher underuses the lights!

Fisher and Alfred, when their game was scheduled earlier in the season, sometimes played under the lights. However, in November the temperature drops considerably after dusk in Hooterville.

AUPepBand's Pops thinks AU, on rainy dismal days, is too quick to turn on the lights at Merrill Field. Says it's a waste of energy....but, probably more importantly, the resulting glare hinders his sight.

Pep wondered if D3 schools would jump on the Thursday Night Bandwagon...but suppose that would interfere too much with classes for the traveling team. Around NYS, the majority of high school teams compete on Friday nights.

Early in its illustrious football history, Alfred University, founded by Seventh Day Baptists, in deference to the Sabbath (sundown Friday to sundown Saturday), played all of its home games Saturday nights under the lights. Attendance was always very good. Some teams refused to schedule Alfred, however, because of the late start.

....just some more random notes from the AUPepBand.

BTW: Happy New Year, Dubbz....now that the Saxons have snapped the Bombers' string of series wins, will IC lose to AU at Butterfield in 2007?

Don't a  few night games sprinkled throughout the year generate some excitement.!!!!

I would say most, D-III games across the country take place in the afternoon.  If you go to the week by week schedule it will back this up.

There are some that play at night...but E8 specific, I know Butterfield doesn't have lights, I don't remember lights at springfield.  As for the others, I haven't caught games there since the full E8 was formed after I left.

Buff State, old Chugger, RPI, Montclair and brockport don't have lights as I remember.

I would assume a lot of it has to do with travel time and getting students back in time to actually get some studying done.

TGP thinks it would.  Even Bart has added lights to a couple of fields on campus.  The SU-Bart LAX game played there in 2005 was to a packed house and the fans went nuts (to the extent that one of them gave Bart a penalty for throwing a lake trout on the field - an old bart tradition - after bart tied the game up 17 all late in the 4th qtr).

It occurs to me that when Fisher first joined the E8 they played all their home games under the lights.  Does anyone else remember this?

SJFF82

Does Hartwick still play there home games under the lights?  I played both games at Hartwick in '92 and '94 under the lights.

RPI, as you point out, doesn't have lights....the other reason most colleges play during the day in D3 is that a good percentage of programs share facilities with other teams....alot of schools do soccer games at night.

The last two Union-Springfield games at Springfield were played under the lights (opener for Union both times).  Incidentally, this year's game was delayed for an hour due to pre-kickoff thunderstorms, putting the game entirely under darkness once it finally kicked off.

Hartwick plays their home games at 11:23 a.m., 3:12 p.m. or any other time they can squeeze in a game so as not to conflict with the field hockey schedule. Sometimes that even means Friday night lights!  :D

Fact is, Springfield opened its 2006 season with a game under the lights vs. Union at Benedum Field.

No lights, but strangely, bagpipes?!

AU Pep Band walked past the bagpipers before the AU-Hartwick contest in 2006 (gosh, that was last year!) Pep, carrying bass drum, paused, and suggested to the pipers that they join the peppers for a "Battle of the Bands," but said suggestion was bagged.
