I think the NFL needs to stop the clock on 1st downs like in college, shorten the play clock to 30 sec, and eliminate kneel downs (I think in the arena leage you need to get positive yards or the clock stops).

I think the NCAA needs to let players that were down without contact (diving catches, slips) get up and continue the play.

'gro - I couldn't agree more on those two points.  I hate seeing a rediculous catch in college and the kid has no chance to score even though theres not a defender within 15 yeards because he laid out.

i don't know if you guys listen to colin cowherd....but he and the legendary beano cook ripped the big ten yesterday. as a whole, their out of conference schedules were weak. they do this rotating schedule thing and as a result, iowa has neither ohio st or michigan on their schedule next year. cowherd said he wouldn't vote iowa in the top 20 if they finished undefeated and he'd take every 2 - 3 loss sec ahead of them. say what you want about cowherd - he comes across like an a$$ sometimes but the guy knows his stuff. i think he's finally growing on me. it made me realize how much the big ten is overrated.

sarge +k for your comments on the bcs stuff.  its unfortunate that its all about the money in college football but we wouldn't follow it as much because money brings more coverage. bottom line: boise st wouldn't last 2 rounds in a playoff format. they were beat up by oklahoma at the end of that game and BARELY won. they pulled out every trick play known to mankind. florida would absolutely kick their d!cks in!

on a totally different note - why does the media vote for the baseball hall of fame?  do they make up for all of the deceased in the hall of fame?  i don't get this. shouldn't the people that comprise the hall of fame be voting people in? i need to get a j o b in the media

I agree that the big 10 is overated but its not Iowa's fault that they dont play Michigan or Ohio St next year.  Thats just the way the schedule works its way out.  And give Ohio St some credit for playing Texas two years in a row as well.  I think all you can ask from major conference teams is to play one top-10 non-league team every year.

actually tgp thinks the worst abusers of weak non-conf scheduling is the sec.  of course, the in-conf play is always very strong (at least at the top 3-4 teams).

that was part of the reason tgp didn't buy auburn's argument in 2004 they deserved to be in the title game vs. sc (they had been smoked by sc in 2002 and 2003 then replaced sc on their schedule with the citadel in 2004 as well as games vs. western carolina or sw la state or something weak like that).

howdy boys.
Seems like some good convo!
Keep it up- im swamped- ill read....

The Truth 00

tgp - i hear your argument about the sec playing out of conference. the thing is...their schedule, like you said, is so loaded with in conference. there's only a few bottom feeders in that league - ole miss, miss state, vandy come to mind. in the big ten - northwestern, indiana, mich st, illinois.

sec football is at the top right now. adding saban at alabama almost guarantees that bama will be in the national title picture in 2 years. look at the coaches in that league - meyer, spurrier, saban, richt, miles, fulmer, nutt,(haha), tuberville.

florida just got richer too. clemson frosh rb cj spiller has supposedly enrolled in classes there. jesus

yeah - TGP just hates hearing about it from his southern fam and friends since TGP lives in PAC 10 country (and went to a Pac10 grad school)

Re: Replay

ANOTHER botched replay during the bowls. Florida's 2nd TD, the guy's knee was clearly down. Didn't matter in the game but WTF are the officials looking at?

AUPepBand doesn't know whether officials had any more views of that TD run than the network. Pep watched carefully...saw the knee down but at that point could not determine the location of the ball...it may, indeed, have broken the plane as player's arm was well ahead of his body. Maybe it hadn't. While, indeed, the knee was down, there was no conclusive evidence that the ball had NOT broken the plane when said knee hit turf. Unless there is conclusive evidence to overrule the call on the field, the call stands.

While the Saxons have had some ridiculous calls go against them, Pep nevertheless doesn't want the review in D3. (Although it's already in the Stagg.) With review, AU Pep Band could be deprived of its "Nuts and Bolts," "Elevator" and "The Ref Is Out to Lunch" cheers.

General E8 question---- Do all the E8 schools conduct a summer football camp?

Alfred Head Coach Dave Murray runs the "Gridiron Champions" Summer Football Camp for high school squads. Started several years ago with a couple of high school teams. Last year, his camp attracted SEVEN high school teams including a long-time top high school program from NJ. The camp gives high school teams a week of practice prior to the pre-season and gives Coach Murray a look at some good prospects. It's a win-win situation.

The Truth 00

right here pep, +k to you.

there's no way there should be replay in d3. oh man, calls would get reversed all the time. the refs in d3 are pretty bad.  pep, i know as a springfield fan i wouldn't want replay on that game tying touchdown in 2005 at alfred. it was borderline whether the snap got off in time. i know the saxons didn't think it did.

Truth be told, Pep had forgotten about that. Of course, the fact that the Saxons won it in overtime probably has a lot to do with that.

Much more difficult to forget this year's bad calls at Merrill Field, first of which was AU's interception returned for TD against Hobart that was ruled a "fumbled at the 1" into the end zone, recovered by Hobart for a touchback; the second of which was an "inadvertent whistle" that denied the Saxons a TD pass against Fisher as AU tight end was ruled "at the four-yard-line" when inadvertent whistle was blown....no one was near him as he sailed into the end zone for a signalled TD that was later denied because an official inadvertently blew his whistle when he wasn't supposed to.

But Pep would not like the review added to D3. Consulting one another is good enough.

Come to think of it, Truth, with the 2006 change in the clock rules, Springfield would never have scored that tying TD in 2005.

BTW: As a Springfield fan, were you at the 2006 AU-Springfield game? And will you be coming to Merrill Field this year?
