Sir Spiedie

Sir Spiedie noted in the story re: UW-Stout that one player's residence contained "steroids". Everyone is presumed innocent, so we will give the player the benefit of the doubt. My question is: Do DIII schools test for steroids? The high school disrtict I live in tests, on a random basis, athletes for both illegal drugs and steroids. We are fairly unique when it comes to steroids. I wish everyone would test.

Also, Sir Spiedie notes that one legal way to "bulk up" is through the ingestion of spiedies and Italian subs. Buffalo wings are also effective, I hear. At fair time, funnel cakes will do the trick as well.

Pep, If you haven't already read him, a great book to read on the way to Florida would be Double Whammy or Stormy Weather by Carl Hiaasen. They both carry the Sir Spiedie Seal of Approval.

Spiedie:

Thanks for the suggestion. Pep had not heretofore heard of Carl Hiaasen but Donald Westlake says "He is so good, he ought to be illegal." And when Donald Westlake speaks...

Stormy Weather looks interesting but Double Whammy, "a wacky tale of murder and mayhem at a big-stakes Florida bass tournament delightfully exposes corruption among the rod-and-reel set" reminds Pep of the scandalous staff bake-offs at Herrick Memorial Library, particularly the one in which Pep was reportedly arrested by Alfred Police for petty larceny for allegedly stealing someone's club crackers for the crust of one of his no-bake entries that proved to garner enough votes to give him the bake-off title. Happy to report Pep was later cleared of the charges and declared the winner!

Pep always gets good ballot results with his simple but beloved Rice Krispie Treats.

In other news... try the book Bleachers.  Great football book and only about 250-300 pages i think.  Easy reading but some serious underlying issues.

Saints... win by 7-12 points!

Go Saints!

"Bleachers" by John Grisham was the first book Pep had read in several years as recreational reading was a virtual unknown pleasure for AUPepBand. "Bleachers" was recommended by a Herrick Library colleague. A quick, compelling read that introduced Pep to the world of books, which is probably a good thing for a guy who's employed as a library assistant.

Grisham has become one of Pep's favorite authors. Another favorite is Pat Conroy, who wrote "Prince of Tides," "The Great Santini" (both made into movies) and "The Water Is Wide," about his teaching at an island school in Georgia...which Pep was reading while riding along I-95 in Georgia on the AU bus with 30 students enroute to Florida for a Habitat for Humanity Collegiate Challenge Spring Break Blitz Build.

As for neighborhood bars...AUPepBand hasn't frequented said establishments since overkill during college days in Morrisville at "The Place" and/or Keegan's Town House.
;)

Pep Pat Conroy is one of my faviorites too...but you missing his best book the  longest season or something like that about his senior season playing point gaurd for the Citadel and basically his life playing basketball great great great book

You're the only dood on the board that doesn't know & accept that '57 can't spell.

Poor grammar and horrible spelling... it's just how he rolls.

Pep was just thinking this morning about the book that got him started with Pat Conroy... "My Losing Season" all about his experiences as a member of the Citadel basketball team. Great read for anyone with a basketball team experience. Thanks for the reminder! +K to you Superman57

Currently 20 degrees and partly cloudy in Alfred, NY, dropping to 7 degrees tonight and only reaching the teens tomorrow. Finally some winter weather! Who wants rain in Alfred in January? This year's ski season has been an uphill battle.

Mr. Spiedie,

Currently in my locale, it is 20 degrees and snowing, and it is expected to be close to or below zero overnight. Welcome to winter in the Northeast. And you know what I don't get? People are complaining about it. WTF!!It's January in New York state! We have been pretty lucky this year with the weather, so grin, bear it, and shaddup!

Bleachers is a great book, anything by Mike Lupica is incredible, My Losing Season is one of my faviorites, Foul ball by Jim Bouton his tale of trying to bring a minor league team to the berkshires is great...Eat This Book by Ryan Nerz the tales of competive eating is amazing a must read. and the last amatures by John Fienstien, about the patriot league basketball is also really good

Sir Spiedie

Cold weather, baby, YEAH!!!!! Gotta love it!!!!  If it's winter, it might as well be COLD!!!!!
You know it's winter when your butt  hits that vinyl car seat in a car that has been outside overnight and it feels like Mike Tyson is pounding away at your kidneys!!! By the way, does anybody still use the old school trick of a sheet of cardboard over the windshield which can be easily removed the next morning, hopefully along with all the ice and snow?

realistic

Sir Spedie, et al....

Back from a weekend in Rochester....made it through 'till monday morning with decent weather, then got hit with ice and delays at the airport.  The ice turned into me taking a digger down the stairs.  Not fun.

As for the books, The Tender Bar was a great read and from what I heard was very much spot on to a lot of LI towns in the '70s and '80s.  I am also a big Hiiasson fan (one of my favorites, I believe, was called Skin Deep)

I assume most have read it, but if you have not - The Sweet Season by Austin Murphy is a must read for all D-III fans.  Along the same lines was a good read about Patriot League basketball called The Last Real Ameteurs.

The Truth 00

don't forget about michael lewis: moneyball and...the blind side. i'm reading it right now. you guys would have less respect for joe montana and more respect for bill walsh. bill walsh is a genius.
