Sir Spedie, et al....

Back from a weekend in Rochester....made it through 'till monday morning with decent weather, then got hit with ice and delays at the airport.  The ice turned into me taking a digger down the stairs.  Not fun.

As for the books, The Tender Bar was a great read and from what I heard was very much spot on to a lot of LI towns in the '70s and '80s.  I am also a big Hiiasson fan (one of my favorites, I believe, was called Skin Deep)

I assume most have read it, but if you have not - The Sweet Season by Austin Murphy is a must read for all D-III fans.  Along the same lines was a good read about Patriot League basketball called The Last Real Ameteurs.

AUPepBand just googled "The Sweet Season" and is tickled to find there's another book on D3 football. Pep has requested it through Herrick Library's excellent Inter Library Loan Department. Had already read the book about the Trinity Lions, "Keeping the Faith," a good read about a struggling Christian college's football team.

Perhaps Pep should consider writing a book....and, like Pat Conroy, adopt the first person. Now that would make news.

Trinity Bible is not a Division III school, just for the record.

Pat:
I was aware of this. However, is AUPepBand correct that Trinity Bible was indeed a Division III school at the time the book was written? Weren't they included in D3 last year? For what reason are they no longer a Division III school? Any insight there?

For those interested in selecting a school, a great tool I discovered is www.college results.org. You can identify any number of schools and it will generate a data rich comparison chart. Nothing about the quality of pep bands, I'm sorry to say, but maybe next year.
Note to Pat Coleman--- This thing is so good I wish you would consider linking to it.

;) +K for reference to quality of pep bands...perhaps Pep should do some research and formulate a "Top Ten D3 Pepbands" list. First task at hand is to list criteria. Can Pep get some assistance with this?

Re: Colts v. New England
Even though I was on the wrong side, Manning manned up. Can't take it away from him. Take that "L" off his helmet. Tonight, Brady was the second best QB on the field. Now on to a crappy Super Bowl.

Pep:

Trinity Bible isn't a D-III school and never has been. You have to offer a lot more than three or four sports to get into Division III. We have never included them on this Web site. They are not a member of the NCAA, or even any other national governing body.

Thanks, Pat. I had remembered seeing them ranked last among D3 football programs. Perhaps it was Dick Dunkel who had included them (last) in his D3 rankings. As it were, then Trinity Bible answers only to.......God!

AUPepBand doesn't believe he's seen this on Post Patterns....where are all the Ithaca posters?

IC Grad Pitches Best Super Bowl Commerical Idea

Gino  Bona, a 1995 Ithaca graduate has won the NFL's inaugural "Pitch Us Your Idea For The Best Super Bowl Commercial Ever. Seriously" contest.  Bona's winning pitch, which can be seen online, will be made into a 30-second commercial that will air during the Super Bowl XLI broadcast on February 4, 2007.

Would that God would kick out the NCAA and would take over DIII - I guess that He has better things to do.

Pat:
In your communications with SIDs, do you have any way of compiling a list of all D3 schools that have pep bands that play at their football games? Perhaps in your "spare time"?   ;)

Sorry about that Pep....I saw that a week or 2 ago.  If that interests you, I was told that one of the competitors on WE's Dirty Dancing is an IC grad as well.

Yes - we are everywhere.

Speaking of the Bombers, which I think is a cool nickname, has anyone tried to change it because it is "politically incorrect"? I'm thinking of the Washington Bullets now Wizards, which I am surprised has not been changed because of the obvious cccult undertones. Back to the Bombers, do they go through the airport with big gear bags that say "Bombers" on the side, wearing sunglasses even at night?

it has come up a few times, but I haven't heard of anything too serious about it.  It is an obvious reference to a bomber pilot (WWII era) so I don't think there would be too much of a call for a change.  There was a good article that was written (tounge in cheek) about mascots and what not (using mostly the Native American and violent names) that mentioned the Bombers.

Sir Spiedie

In parts of Florida, the grade schools now have "Fall Festivals" instead of Halloween Carnivals because of the fear of satanic influences.

AUPepBand

To AUPepBand's recollection, there has been no complaint from the Anglo-Saxon community about Alfred University's athletic teams being called the "Saxons" or, similarly, "Saxon Warriors." But then, perhaps the Anglo-Saxon community has never heard of Alfred and the Saxons. And if they had, surely they would hop on the AU Pep Bandwagon.  :)

I don't know if this has ever been explored before, but here are comparative attendance figures for 2005 for all DIII schools (all schools for that matter), also by conference. Sorry if this is old news. How does your school/conference "stack up"?

Sir Spiedie

In 2005 it appears the Bomberers rule in attendance, with St. John a fairly distant second.
