Welchie has always had a soft spot in his heart for the mini-backs(he was one), and they do well for him in the crunch. Cherkas, Carpenter, Giogio.  After all, gotta "chair step and get up in their" which a little guy can do.

They had this tough little son of a gun transfer from some Yankee Conference school too.....what was his name?   ;)

Ha thanks, but i think he was like 5'11/ 6' if i remember correctly.

Looks to me like the back in question went for about 1300 yards in three seasons on South Hill.

I am not sure I would includ Carpenter in the small back category.

realistic

carp was short....but he was a pretty big dude.  I was always surprised how much smalled Maddi was than how he looked on the field.

I dunno, granted I only saw Fisher once or twice a year.  When I was there though, Lang was a complete animal, probably the best linebacker I've seen in Division III, along with the kid from Alfred a couple years back.  He was simply in on every tackle.  That will be a tough hole to plug.

Stepnick returns, however, and if healthy can cause a lot of havoc.

While I don't want to bring winmag back from the shadows, Reile has shown very little against Ithaca over the past couple years.  I have no doubt he'll run all over the Mount Ida's of the world behind the big offensive line, but we'll have a better idea at the end of the year if he's truly an elite, full-time back. He'll see a lot of eight or even nine in the box, especially if the wide receivers continue to struggle.  They looked flat out horrible when I saw them last year.

Personally I think the wide receiver core really clicked the last part of the year and became quite efficient.  They lost the number one receiver in the playoffs against Union I believe, and that hurt their chances against Mount Union...That additional element could have really helped.

Hey wait, there is no reason a 5'5" player could not make a real contribution to a team in other than a "Rudy" role.
Right off the bat Spiedie thinks about punt/kickoff returns. If he is fast enough to do those things, he would be fast enough to play tailback. Travis Henry is what, 5'8" or 5'9"? Emmit Smith 5'10", and the list goes on. The young man appears to be a good athlete. Spiedie wishes him the best of luck.

Pep never thought a player that stood at 5-2 could have any impact in a D3 football game, much less a basketball game at any high school--until he saw Julio Fuentes run through the Fisher defense in the fourth and deciding quarter in 2005 en route to AU's 13-7 win at Growney.  Saw the kid play pick-up basketball and lead his team in rebounding! He's scheduled to be back on campus this fall. Pep believes the kid will walk again....true grit.

On Saxon Warriors! On to Victory!
...Fight, fight for Alfred, A-L-F, R-E-D!

Good luck to Julio....

And I remember St. Lawrence had a short SS back in the day. (Im gonna say he was around 5'6)

They played well in the second half, you're right. They lost Nowicki after a kickoff return at Springfield, which hurt vs. Mt. Union... they would have had another option to spread the field. Of course, that all gets negated when Kramer only gets .7683 seconds to drop back & get the throw off.

Here's to Julio walking again - truly a great thing if he can get back to a relatively normal life. No kid deserves that.

Good to see you back Pep!

Jose-

Do we know that Donavan is coming back for sure?  If so, we could have one heck of a backfield.
