I just got back from Merrill Field.  35-7 Saxons is the final.  The Utica TD was a 90 yd Int return with 7:30 left against the Alfred second string.

Also, Alfred had 99 yds of penalties in a trend that is sure to destroy the team during the final 3 regular season games if not corrected.

Yes, I think it goes without saying that the second string is not as good as the first string.  Were they just as good or better, they would be sharing time or starting, respectively. 

Additionally, Alfred spent most of the second half running the ball with Utica knowing full well that predominantly running plays were going to be called.  Utica had some very nice blitzing packages to start the game and two big boys in the middle of their D-line which held Saxon running plays up the middle until the fourth quarter.  So, it is no shock that much more conservative play calling and sitting regulars would result in less scoring.

Another AU Pep Band victory as Utica failed to muster a single trumpet.
Nevertheless, the Pioneers put up a good fight. Utica QB Greg Pinelli took a hard clean hit from AU's Ron Smith early in the game. Pep saw Pinelli after the game, told him "Nice game" and told him Pep was glad he got up after taking that shot...and that a hit like that normally results in the Pep Band doing a "Hit 'em again, hit 'em again!" "Har--der, har--der..." cheer but we really didn't want to see him get hit any harder than that. Pinelli played a great game.

Saxons take care of business. And, true to Murray's style, AU with little desire to run up the score.

Decent (but quiet) crowd at Merrill Field today, despite Mid-Semester Break.
