I don't have time to read up right now, but I just finished my chinese after getting back from that brutal afternoon at the Boz.  Kudos to Hobart who are an all-around solid football team.  The two teams had very similar amounts of talent, but the lack of discipline really crippled the Saxons today.  The offense and return teams put unnecessary pressure on the defense due to turnovers and penalties and Hobart wore out the Saxon D as the game wore on.  The dagger in the game was the on-side kick that Hobart recovered in the third after they took a 24-16 lead.  I hope the Statesmen make the tourney since they will do the East proud; I just hope that Alfred can join them.

Alot of people were pointing out the ammount of penalties AU was getting in previous games and how that would come back to bite them vs a good team.  Boy did it ever.  They didnt get alot of penalties today but as AUKaz points out the discipline is definatley lacking down at AU.....

It does... but i think they do it often in big games... they played cortland in the playoffs and were outgained by like 200 plus yards and won on those type of plays...

Some good games this weekend it sounds like.  The E8 is finally shaping up a little bit.  Some observations:

1) SJF, with the win over Utica, will get into the NCAA's with a win over Alfred is two weeks.  They are probably the only team in the E8 that can get a Pool C bid.  If Fisher beats Alfred in two weeks, if Hartwick wins out (Springfield...not a gimmie by any stretch of the imagination, and Utica), and Alfred loses to Ithaca next week (I give this game a pick em since it is at Butterfield) and then loses to SJF...Hartwick gets the AQ.  If this is the case, it would be unimaginable for Fisher to be left out...considering they went 9-1 for the year, have pretty much been ranked in the top 10 all year long, went to the final 4 last year, and were literally about 3 yards away from being undefeated (Hartwick...and lost at Hartwick).  In my opinion, as long as they win in two weeks, they are in.

2) Alfred still holds their destiny in their own hands.  Win the next two and they are in.  Though as I have said before in the last few weeks, it will be extremely tough.  Never easy to play and win back-to-back at Ithaca and Fisher.  No one until Hartwick this year has ever beaten Ithaca and Fisher in the same year.  I am not sure though they can get in with a Pool C bid, so they probably need to win out to get in.  The loss today against Hobart could end up killing their chances.  If Alfred beats Ithaca, loses to SJF, that would leave them 8-2.  Hobart is 6-2 right now, and would have a leg up on Alfred if they both finish 8-2.  Still...they are the only team in the E8 to have their destiny in their own hands.  Fisher, however, gets two weeks to prepare for the Saxons with everything on the line.

3) Hartwick needs to win out against Springfield (which should be a great game between two contrasting offenses) and Utica to have a shot at the AQ...which is probably their only shot at the NCAA's.  Not a great showing today against Norwich in a downpour, but let's face it, 'Wick isn't getting in with style points.  The WNEC loss is killing them, so they probably need that AQ.  To get it, they need to win out, and have Alfred lose to both Ithaca and Fisher.  If that happens, Fisher and 'Wick will finish tied in the league with a 5-1 record, and the tiebreaker goes to 'Wick because of the head to head. 

4) Ithaca...they need a ton of thing to happen to get in.  If Fisher loses to Alfred in a few weeks (assuming, Ithaca also beat Alfred the week before), then the whole thing gets crazy.  It could leave 4 teams at the top with a 4-2 record...and good luck figuring that one out.  The best that Ithaca can hope for is to win out, with convincing wins against Alfred and Cortland, and hope Rochester makes a big push late in the LL, with some of the top NJAC teams falling.  It is unlikely, but stranger things have happened.

I hope the E8 gets at least 4 "play-off" teams between the NCAA's and the ECAC's.  It will be great for the league.  In any event, the last two weeks should be great.

Wow, I go to the Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame, Followed by a womens hockey game and I miss all the fun.... Finally the real alfred steps up...and they sucked the big one today, not a good start to probably the toughest 3 game stretch in DIII...
