And since Jose Q brought it up a couple days ago, I just want to mention again that the 2004 Bombers were the best team I've seen on South Hill.  While I'd love for us to somehow sneak in this year, that team was truly one that could compete for a national championship, which we haven't had since.

An offense that could move at will, and a solid, solid defense.  A double overtime loss on the road against Fisher on brutal interception call, and a one point loss in the slop on the road to a decent Brockport team.  I'm still not over what could have been...
Thousands of fans join in the revelry, showing their Bomber pride and support for the football team. Some fans take the rowdiness a little too far, however, by starting fights, damaging property and tipping Port-a-Potties. -Ithacan, November 10th

Pep,

MIOH is waiting to hear your analysis of this year's contest at Butterfield.  Did you make it over to the FDC tailgate for Krispy Creams and PBR?

Alf really needs to look into the scheduling problems they have in odd years.  Playing 3 contenders on the road late in the season doesn't seem to be a formula for success.

Go Bombers
Cortland Sucks

Pep partook of the FDC's (only) token Coca-Cola prior to Saterday's game. Was good to put faces with the FDC characters/posters. Can't imagine the mild-mannered affable Not-So-Rowdy-Bomber could ever have been rowdy. Lumpy, well, let's just say Pep knows another "Lumpy" as well and IC's Lumpy did not disappoint.

As Pep candidly told the FDC prior to the game, AU was not only facing a tough place to play but the Saxons were smarting from the turn-over-events at Da Boz and the Bombers were a far better team in Week 10 than they were in, say, Week 3 or 4. Juvan has come into his own and Pep would say the Bomber defense is stronger than in '06. Pep believed AU had a legitimate shot when the Saxons pulled to within 28-25 early in the fourth. However, IC's big play offense responded immediately, certainly dashing the Saxon faithful hopes. The records were reversed last year (IC 7-1, AU 6-2) when they met at Merrill, with the same result, the home team winning. Pep theorizes that the grass neutralizes AU's strength....its speed.

At any rate, it was a well-played game. Seemed once again (as at Hobart), AU didn't get any breaks. Pep thought IC dodged a bullet on that holding call with Juvan under tackle in the end zone. Was he outside the tackles on his throw away? Probably. Must the hold occur in the end zone to result in a safety? Probably. Did the refs call it correctly? Probably (darn it all!). Did IC escape BIG trouble? Definitely. Would that have changed the complexion of the game? Could be.

Did the Bombers listen to Kaz00 and start thinking about Cortaca? Nope. They were all business. And they ran the ball arguably better than anyone against AU this year. And the IC defensive line shut down AU's run, putting more pressure on Keeley to deliver. And Pep applauds Keeley for delivering. An uncharacteristic drop on a long-gainer didn't help. So the Saxons go back to work. And the nice thing, after all that, is that AU still will play this Saterday for the E8 title and a trip to the NCAAs at Growney.

Someone mentioned seeing a tuba at ButterField with the AU Pep Band. Pep's two tuba players could't be there, so KaZ00 collared an A-State tuba player as a "replacement." Likewise, AU was shy three trumpets at IC, all of which should be at Growney.

Pep's question of the week: Has Fisher done anything about the sub-standard visitor seating at Growney? If not, should the band sit with the AU fans in the sideline trenches or on the Fisher side with a view?

I can't figure out if thats a subtle jab at Hartwick beating Ithaca, Fisher beating Ithaca, or both....

Absolutely.

Talk about a team that got stronger as the year went on.  I have avoided considering what might have been with that team because it is too painful.  Definitely better than either of the East Region finalists of their era.  (Although, the 2001 team would have been fun to watch in the playoffs with BY).

Take it any way you like...if it's a jab, it must have connected, eh?  ;) It just so happens to be the two weeks, back-to-back, early in the season, when Ithaca didn't win.

I honestly can't believe the team I saw get shoved around by Hartwick is the same team that just rolled over what is still a considerably above-average Alfred squad.  I don't think Pep's comment is a jab anywhere; November IC is just a much better football team somehow than September IC.  Some (but not all) of my doubts re: Welch and the staff have been appeased.  For the first time in a few years I don't feel like Cortland is going to crush us.

I am starting to get excited about Cortaca. I think that is a game between two really quality teams. I agree with Pep that IC is a much better team than earlier this year, and C-state has been a quaity team all year. I don't think either team has a real good chance at NCAA's but it is a shame, because IC is probably one of the top 8 teams in the region. I think that IC has a real shot at beating C-state.

When IC always drubbed AU in their early season encounters, Pep always wished they'd play later on because the Bombers always started so strong. This year Pep would have prefered AU playing the Bombers earlier in the season. Pep is thinking  there's just no good time to play the Bombers.  :-\

Pepband,
It was good seeing you this weekend.  The FDC will indeed be prepared next time with a variety pack of soda-pop for the Pep Band.   It was too bad you couldn't stay around for Mrs. Lumpies chowda!  holy crap, it was like a party in my mouth and all my taste buds were invited!  Needless to say Dubbz was again impressed with the Commish's knowledge of AU and IC football.  Next time we'll plan an early arrival to hear some "Yogi" (Pepband) stories.

Lucky for you NSRB was indeed NSRB. when he was "Rowdy" you may have taken him to "band camp" and shown him how to use a flute.
