But back to football.........

It seems like Hartwick has some defensive problems.  But is it speed, size, quickness?

Size up front. They need some space eaters. If a team has a power running game we are in huge trouble. The defenses goal is to get one or two stops a game, the offense will take over from there.

That same exact theory didn't work out too well for Springfield - you absolutely need a defense to do any damage in the NCAA's.

I agree, but lets not forget this is only 'wicks first taste of the NCAA's. We'll be happy with monkey stomping Curry and build on that for next year with the same offense and improved defense and special teams (both problems right now)

God forbid, Hartwick should lose.....just a matter of time until the NEFC get a 'W' in a NCAA game....your school just doesn't want to be the one to give it to them.

Amen

bosox- u may want to see the uc campus now.
much different than it used to be.
and what is wrong with the area?

Perhaps Bosox does not embrace the culturally and racially diverse atmosphere that we enjoy at UC, I personally welcome it.

Good point, Add. Something I had forgotten in my last post.

Everything you said was great... and I wish UC the best... except for this comment that you agreed with.... I dont embrace culturally and racially diverse atmosphere's?  Thats just stupid

I meant that I forgotten that part of the College in my "pitch," not that you don't appreciate it... I don't want that to be misconstrued.

Just throwing in my two cents on the IC/MUC game this Saterday:

The way IC has played the past few weeks has given me obscene amounts of confidence in this team.  All of what I consider to be the basics has been very impressive - the running game, pass protection, defense, DJ's leadership, etc.  And if we've learned anything at all from college football this season, it should be that there's a reason they actually play these games.  I've been reading an awful lot of MUC ball-washing, and perhaps it's merited, perhaps it's not - I've never seen them play in person.  But on Saterday in Alliance, there will be a football game played.  Two very talented teams of very hungry players will show up at the stadium, whistles will be blown, balls will be snapped, plays will be run, points will be scored, etc.  And when the dust settles, we'll have a winner.  We can talk and talk about who's better - and believe me, I like the talk as much as anyone - but there will be a game played, and factors that no one can see coming will impact that game.

Basically, it's anyone's game for the winning.  Go Bombers.

Here is what IC needs to do in order to be in this game.  In order of importance.

1) TACKLE.  From what Ive seen from them the past few years, the inability to tackle has hurt them the most in games they have lost.  Simple tackling.  MUC likes to run those off-tackle runs where ICs MLBs are going to have to slide over and make some plays.  ICs SS is also going to have to read the run and come up and make a play

2) Stop the big plays.  MUC has beaten teams with big plays and it will be key for IC to make sure they dont get beat deep, they dont throw awful passes, and they dont give up field posisition on special teams.

3) Do what they do well.  And I mean dont put in a bunch of new stuff for the one week.  Just practice what got you to this point and maybe change a pattern or two.  One or two successful trick plays are not going to win this game.

4) Establish a running game.  And I think by mixing up the two backs is the only way this will get done.  And I dont think a power running game is going to do it either.  A couple key draws might loosen them up.

5) Return a kick for a score (or at least get good field position).  IC has great special teams, and if they are going to stay in this game, special teams are going to have to come into play.

I'd add not overcompensate just because they are playing MUC (easier said than done b/c MUC is so intimidating).  I caught a ton of flak from MUC fans after the stagg last year b/c I commented that UWW's QB overthrew his WRs on at least 3 potential TD passes.  The kid was under pressure no doubt, but if he stood in the pocket and didn't overcompensate, he would have made those throws.  UWW's WRs got behind the MUC DBs on all these plays (DB 101 - don't ever, ever let your man get behind you) and were open in the end zone only to see the pass fly over their heads out of reach.

To be honest, it's not really that intimidating of an environment down there. I didn't get the whole, "holy sh*t we're in alliance" type of feeling.

I was more impressed w/ Ithaca's environment.

runk

Most of us (MUC fans) have nothing but great respect for all the atheletes that work hard all sesaon, and for their teams who make the post season. Please ignore idiots who act otherwise. Did I read somewhere that IC webcasts their games, if so including away?

SJF Fan

I would tend to agree with Runks characterization of MUC fans. At last year's Semis -  before, during, and after the game, they were a hospital bunch.

Week 1 predictions:

MUC wins by 3
Capital loses by 28
RPI wins by 10
Curry and Hartwick break the record for a combined score in a single game and declare a draw.

SJF vs. Hobart - toss up.

So Mount Union is holding their opponents to 12 yards rushing per game?  That would be good even if they were playing against high school teams let alone college.  12 yards....seriously.  You can get that on one decent play.  I know you have to abandon the run after being down by 90 but they are barely allowing over 100 yards passing as well.  Ouchie
