+K KS....a poem that is often read at Alfred Rural Cemetery during our annual Memorial Day service. Pep remembers as a Cub Scout lad marching in a solemn parade into the cemetery where the Memorial Day service was held every year. About ten years ago, Pep, realizing nothing was done anymore to help us "remember," invited the community to gather at the cemetery flagpole and a number of folks contributed to a memorable service including "Taps" played by an Alfred prof who had annually (many times in solitude) continued a tradition of playing the piece on Memorial Day.

Pep is pleased to report that a Memorial Day service has been held every year since with anywhere from 75 to 200 citizens in attendance....and recitation of Flanders Field is often included.

Pep, thats very considerate of you to take on that.  We need more folks like you around here... if we did, maybe this country would start getting its' act together a little better.

NSRB has been playing "Taps" for military funerals, including both his Grandfathers, many friends, many American Legion and VFW Vets funerals in Central New York and almost all Memorial Day services since he was 13 or 14 including 3 performances on Monday.  Always been kind of a given, for NSRB to do it for those guys.  NSRB feels pretty honored to be asked each time.

I see Cortland and Cortland only joining the E8.  Cortland has some amazing facilities for football (and athletics) and the school itself is pretty decent as well.  Its clear that the SUNY people wanted Cortland to be the showcase for d3 athletics for that system.

I have to admit that when I heard the news that the E8 would look at state schools for football, Cortland was the first thought that popped into my head. It makes a lot of sense for both sides. Cortland gets to lighten up the travel schedule, while adding Ithaca as a conference game. The E8 gets a team that has a decent history, as well as making a ton of geographic sense.

I hope that they at least consider it. But, who else can it be. Washington and Jefferson is already part of the league for field hockey. Kings was my first thought when I heard that Norwich was leaving. I don't know. I hope they announce it soon, so the debating can begin.

Yea Cortland seems to be a new d3 powerhouse in some important sports (baseball, lacrosse).  The facilities and location make it a perfect fit for the E8.

Pep certainly would welcome Cortland State to the Empire 8. Cortland State is alma mater of Pep's volleyball-playing/phys ed major/home-schooling mother of four cousin as well as Pep's high school track teammate, a phys ed major who continues teaching p.e. to elementary kids in Bozeman, MT. Cortland was always a nice place for Pep to pick up/drop off riders for the weekend Alfred-Mooville trips, putting some gas money in Pep's pocket...back when he could fill the tank of his $50 auction-bought 1962 Plymouth Valiant (push button automatic w/Slant 6) for about $8.60.

Alfred and Cortland State go way back. Seems the Saxons often had the Red Dragons' number as the Saxons lead that series by a wide margin.

Pep has learned that AU is expecting more than 100 football recruits among its freshman class this fall.

PA / WUDLINE,

I may as well get into some trouble cause everything is so quiet. The travel in the NJAC is a little tough. Buff, Brock, Morris are 5+ hours and Cort 4+. I'm trying to take an average. There is no dis-respect to any of these teams, but would it not make sence for the above to be absorbed into the E8 and LL for Football and bring Wesley and Salisbury to the NJAC for Football only. W.Conn would probably have the worst travel @4+ hours. In reality this really makes sence, but actually it will not because of commitments, NCAA, Conferences and Politics. Thoughts?

Less then (3) months and here we go !!!

IMHO, it is beginning to happen.  The E8 lost affiliate Norwich which puts the AQ in jeopardy.  The Northwest Conference, which has two more national titles than the E8 since the inception of the pools in 1999, did not receive a Pool B bid last year.  The E8 is looking at strategies to avoid that.  The SUNYAC teams, Brock, Buff, Cort and Morris, will fulfill the four core member requirement, should the SUNYAC seek to sponsor football.  If the E8 pre-empts that move by accepting the SUNYAC schools, then the E8 has 9 ready made games, in closest proximity possible.

What happens in the NJAC?  I think that they accept the ACFC schools.  The only challenge for the MAC is to find 3 non-conference games to fill the schedules, especially if the Centennial is playing 8 conference games, the NJAC accepts the ACFC schools (including Apprentice) and is playing 9-conference games and the Liberty League is playing 7 conference games.

We have talked about this for a few years and basically makes sence for the Up-State NJAC schools to be absorbed by the E-8 and LL and the ACFC to the NJAC. With the E-8 losing it's AQ next year, I could see something happen like the E-8 taking Cortland and leaving the others in the NJAC. The best for everyone would be like you said, but that scenario being very attractive, IMHO will never happen. Any comments?

Happy Memorial Day to all. God Bless our Vets, our Men and Women currently serving and God Bless America !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Alfred's Memorial Day Service nearly went without someone to play Taps....the gent (a retired prof who specializes in Sherlock Holmes) who has played it annually for decades, is now in poor health. However, a Boy Scout at the last minute agreed to play it and did a fine job.

NSRB: Pep remembers that you once played with the IC Pep Band? Bring your trumpet to Merrill Field this year! Pep doubts the IC band will make the trip so late in the season.

Knightstalker

The Memorial Day services in Secaucus last Thursday evening and yesterday morning were well attended and went off well.  We have had the same kid playing taps since he was about 12, he is now a Jr or Sr in high school, the kid keeps getting better.  Yesterday the man who has been my mentor in the VFW and a PT boat sailor read the names of all the Secaucus war dead.  As he read each name a Boy Scout placed a flag at the crosses that we erect at the town hall every memorial day.  After the reading of the war dead the town kid played Taps and we raised the flags back to full staff.

Today the Stalkerette is taking Buddy Poppies to her class and teachers and is going to teach them what the Poppy means to the vets.

Thanks to all who took time to remember the men and women who gave their lives for our freedom.

Does anyone have a list of incoming players for Hartwick?  Or at least some of the names that could be early contributors?

AUPepBand

Pep thinks it's a bit early to disclose recruits, but could be wrong.

nice. supa... very nice.  + (-K)!

Pep,

To be quite honest, NSRB feels a bit embarrassed to say that he has not taken the trip to Mayberry yet, perhaps this is the year... if the gas prices ever decide to stop... $4 a gal is tough on the wallet, even to go watch the Bombers.  And TY for the invitation...  I hope the AU Pepband can handle this Bomberhorn, the IC Pep band couldnt... hence the move to student section to help establish the FDC.

KS, sounds like quite the ceremonies.  NSRB was a little discouraged at the ever growing smaller population of folks that turn out for Memorial Day, parades, ceremonies, and the few people that actually know what its all about.  Its rather discouraging when the high school and middle school bands are released promptly after the parade to go have their hotdogs and run around, or go home, while the vets and the chaplins are talking about why its so great to live in this country.  NSRB, put in some time playing Taps for 4 ceremonies on Monday, and then played the funeral for the former town mayor who passed away over the weekend who was a WW2 and Korean vet in both the Air Corp and the Airforce yesterday morning.  Certainly makes you appreciate things a little more after hearing their stories.

Some props to SU for taking the cake at the Lax Nat'l Championship... too bad the other CNY teams like LeMoyne and Cortland and OCC coudlnt handle the heat at the finish... maybe if Ithaca had beat'n the dragons in Post season, like they did in the regular season, the Bombers would be raising a trophy right now.

lumpy

hey all you Ithaca faithful, hope everyone is well, i just wanted to drop a line and let you know BAM BAM has a tryout with the Buffalo Bills next week, keep your fingers crossed !!!
