Norwich is leaving the E8 after this season.

Has anyone heard what the conference wants to do, if anything, to keep the AQ?

Any change in previous discussions?

Thanks.   :)

There has been talk of getting a SUNY school in here, the E8 just voted to allow SUNY schools over the summer and there was an invitation for Cortland to join...

Unless Cortland/Brockport jump from the NJAC the E8 may be going pool B...

If you were Cortland, would you leave the NJAC for the E8? I wouldn't.

If I were on the team I would.  I'd much rather play decent teams that are mainly about an hour and a half away as opposed to decent teams that all reside in New Jersey....Frankly I don't know how those Springfield and Norwich players do it.

But would Cortland be as successful in the E8?

I think Cortaca would become the de facto conference championship game in the future.

Ha, not if Fisher has anything to say about it.  Or Alfred for that matter.

*and even more occasionally Hartwick

I am hearing that they wanted to but money is an issue.  IC and other private schools can bring in 150 football players and their 40,000 tuition.  Cortland would need to field that same 150 to be competitive (JV team) and that would require a lot of state money which is not exactly being passed out like candy right now.

I don't buy that one.  I mean, how many tens of millions did they spend on that athletic complex in the first place?

And Im going to say a small percentage of IC students are paying even half of the 40K tuition.

Building projects come from different funds than tuition dollars and money for athletics.  In most states a state institution must use their budgetary dollars or their budget gets reduced by the state the next year.  Cortland may have gotten a huge grant from the State of NY for the athletic complex, that does not mean they have the money to fund an additional 50 football players.  Cortland undoubtedly has a smaller endowment than schools in the E8.  Most students may not be paying that 40K per year but the school is still getting it somehow.  It would hurt Cortland or any NJAC school to move to the E8.  It is kind of like Mt Union, how many schools can compete with a school that has 200 kids on the roster every year.  You can't.

Ithaca please don't lose to curry. Last year Hartwick was looking forward to St. John Fisher part 2, and got Smacked in the mouth for it.

Very much looking forward to playing 'Wick in '09

Why...we cant beat 'em?

I think there are several reasons.  1 being that 'Wick is a team that is truly hard to take very seriously.  Forget the fact that they are primarily a soccer school first, they've lost to Curry, and took more than 70 to beat Utica.

When you have that kind of anecdotal evidence out there, after you get done beating up on a true football program (IC), I think its understandable that we just looked past them these last few seasons and had a hard time getting up for that game. . .

That changes in '09 though - 3 touchdown margin at least.

Ok, in 07 maybe, but this year there was no way you guys were looking past them. You were just beat. Face it, the team that lost to curry, gave up 70 to utica, cant win on the road, plays no defense, and only has Boltus (did I miss anything?) was the better team.

Better at what?  At praying our Quarterback would fumble the ball within a few yards of scoring to end that game?  It was an evenly played game (Fisher had the ever so slight edge in total yards if memory serves).  Yes Fisher had the hail mary, but again Fisher more than compensated for that by fumbling twice within 10 yards of scoring and a missed chip shot field goal and then another missed not so chip shot field goal.  I wouldn't say Hartwick was the "better" team.

They might come different funds, but those funds were there to build a football stadium.  You dont spend tens of millions of dollars on a football staduim with out planning to finance the football program.  Wouldnt the players fund themselves by paying tuition too though?

It doesnt hurt Cortland when someone looks at those facilities and then goes to Ithaca, Utica, Alfred, St. Lawrence, Springfield or Norwich and looks at theirs right?

Show me how many State colleges in D-3 have unlimited rosters.  Most state schools and state school conferences have roster limits because they cannot afford to have 150+ on the football team.  You then need to increase funding for all other athletic programs both mens and womens.  A state college is not using football to drive the number of students up like many private schools do.  Basically whether you choose to believe it or not state schools in D-3 cannot afford what a private school can.

It depends on the school though to I think KS.

I seems to me that the powers who be have put Cortland football a little higher than Buff St. football.

And the fact remains that Cortland probably has one of the top stadiums/complexes in the country for d3 and d2 football.

And Im not sure how much an unlimited roster helps the football team.  Its not like starters would be cut right?  Does Cortland cut freshman football players who want to play JV football?

realistic

I know you guys are talking other budget issues now....but most of the Stadium Complex (not just the FB field) was state grant money.  Cortland came up with very little for it.

Yea but Ithaca College does not get state grant money (tens of millions of dollars of state grant money) to build football stadiums and athletic facilities.

I mean, Cortland State as a school does not run on tuition money alone.  Its a state school.  It gets state money.  Im not saying they have an overall advantage over Ithaca or other private schools, but they do have some advantages.

JU - absolutely.  Thats what I was saying.

Also - I want to know which cinder block in the new IC complex my $25 bought.

I believe when Brockport, Buff State and Cortland all had more then 100 kids on their rosters previously. I think that changed when they went to the NJAC. I believe the 100 player roster is an NJAC rule.

. . that lost to Springfield. . .

Look, when you hang 30 pts and beat Ithaca's brains in like few ever have, with a Nationally ranked team on double deck (Salisbury) - it is more than understandable to look past a Soccer school that sports a football team that plays power houses like Mt. Ida.  . .

I think that's more than fair. .

Exactly and that wasn't just for football.  That was for every other sport.  In addition, the state allocated that money to inject a financial revenue boost to that area.  They now host plenty of High School championship games there.  You are talking apples and oranges here.

This knowledge comes from my Cortland Business degree.  It is fun to explain it to you IC guys.

Its more than apples and oranges.  States dont spend tens of millions of dollars for high school championship games.  That stadium is an advantage for Cortland, thats all Im saying.

It is an advantage and thats why the "state school" chant is funny to me.  The added revenue from HS games was just my point to show that the stadium was not just built for Cortland Football.  It was a grant, not money thats included in the football budget which is what would be needed to expand the rosters and form a JV team.

added revenue from HS games?  Seriously?

And I know how you have a business degree and all, but when a college doesnt have to spend money for a stadium (like Ithaca College would have to do) it frees up other money for other things.  And doesn't Cortland have a JV team?  Do they cut freshman football players?
