Gro -

This was a kick in deez nutz weekend for TGP in TGP's work FF league.  Had a revamped lineup in place but ended up facing a colleague that had Hasselbeck, Alexander and co starting.  To make matters worse, due to the bye week, had to start A Bryant and V Davis - already had F Gore in at RB (you know you are in trouble when 3 guys are 9ers vs. the Philly D).  Anyway, that rumblin, bumblin, stumblin 98 yd TD cost Gore and Davis (knocked out of the game b/c of injuries).  Of course Gore's back up then scores 2 garage time tds.  Basically an 18 pt swing in one freakin play.

Add insult to injury, TGP had Deangelo W (bringing in a solid goose egg after going OFF last week) as the flex WR/RB and Ladell Betts on the bench.

Soooo pissed.  At least TGP killed in his LA and Hobart alumni leagues.

Any WPI posters on the LLPP?

What's the poop on the Woostah doods?

After Hobart only winning their first 3 games by a combined 14 points, TGP could really use a nice 42-10 win this weekend against the Bizarro-neers.

nice observations stim... some commentary

QuoteThe atmosphere/surroundings are great for a game.. deserves more fans
yes, I think there should be more of a following of RPI football by the students and community. problem #1. If I am correct, which I usually am, most RPI students didn't go to their HS football games unless they were in the marching band. They end up at RPI and have no interest in football, especially games on saturday afternoons that are much better suited for tournaments of Halo. Alumni are spread out but try to make a few games. RPI makes little or no attempt to attract local fans to their games. There's only RPI, Union, and SUNY Albany playing college football in the area. Establishing a fan base shouldn't be that hard. Personally I think both RPI and Union should work on this issue and you could see the shoes game become the biggest football game in the area.

QuoteFor an engineering school, for a sound system is two horrible sounding speakers above the scoreboard the best they can do?
yeah seriously, WTF. This is the school not wanting to invest in '86 field because its on its way out. Kinda rediculas that our warmup music is being played on a boombox held up to the PA microphone. I wish I were kidding.

QuoteAdmission on the honor system.. new one on me.
Way to hard to enforce entry when school buildings are essentially part of the "stadium". Any cat can say that have to work on a project in the JEC and get into the football game.

QuoteField has a very pronounced crown to it
Don't know what you're talking about... although I always felt faster when running towards the sidelines... hmmmm.

QuoteEnd zone fans..(I assume some of this board) was certainly original in getting on the officials.. Near the end of the first half during a time out  the referee was trying his best to be cool  and ignore the hecklers, I think the "Did you do the Oklahoma - Oregon game last week?" got his attention.
Tailgate starts at 9:30 creativity comes in 12oz cans.

QuoteWondered about last kickoff as well.. why not onsides?
with the new clock rules an onsides kick seems like a must with under 3min.

QuoteThink RPI will fly from here on.  They have showed brief flashes on O. Penalties and turnovers haver hurt. Defense has played pretty well.
I agree, they need to get their heads out of their arses and play smart football.  Turnovers = dumb.

QuoteJV RPI 12 Union 7 on Sun
JV games = 22 hungover kids trying not to throw up on the field.

Red Swarm to the West

Men,

I just got caught up with all of the posts from the weekend...with coaching youth football, real job, kids, house and honey do list...I will need to step up my game to ever get off the junior varsity...

Re:  RPI vs. Hobart...Pumpkin heads win again this year....the only thought I have now is to take the carving knife out and stab out the eyes and teeth of this years front porch Jack-o-lanterns...the feeling of carving up a pumpkin head on the kitchen table will be the only satisfaction I have this year relating to that particular variety of BIG ORANGE SQUASH!!!   Congrats to the Hobartians....now.....GO BEAT THE "U"!!!!!!!

Re:  My previous post pertaining to the comparisons between Rensselaer and Hobart....My main point was that if you are looking for an outstanding education with a very promising career upside...and you want to play football in Upstate NY...Rensselaer presents the best package in all of the state...the only exception might be if you want to be a phys ed teacher...although Matt Patricia...former player and coach at Rensselaer has done "OK" in the phys ed arena by earnign the position of LB Coach for the NFL's New England Patriots... now that puts Rensselaer on the map as a coaching factory....(guys....don't come at me on that one...I am stretching it a lot on that point)

Bottom line is that we are all vying for the same kids in the region...and it is highly competitive...and there are many pros and cons for each school....but Rensselaer has a great package to offer...and when they get the new $50 Million +  sports facility done, it will just sweeten the pot for the recruits to look at....

Criticize me, and I may not like you.
Ignore me, and I may not forgive you.
Encourage me, and I may not forget you."

It really is split in the section II area.  The kids that went to really good schools from my highschool either went to RPI or Union.  We always had somone at either or both schools playing ball as well.   I was on my way to union :o until I sat down with the coaches from each.  Those meeting made my decision much easier.  Some of the union guys and I used to workout together over the summer.   My small town gym had representation from RPI, Union, Alfred, Utica, Springfield, Cortland, Ithaca, U-albany, the frozen tundra of SLU and WPI.  Seems like there is a pool of talent and fans in the region that RPI really needs to tap into.  To be honest even being from the region I knew more about Union than i did RPI.  Of course that has changed over the last 6 yrs or so but the school does need to market its athletics more.

Dr. Jackson is not helping the cause.

Oxbacker:

Don't have a firm appreciation of the finer points of the recruiting conundrum but I believe that RPI has an untapped potential group of players in the MA area.  Many of the better players (that also might have the grades) in MA opted for some of the better D2 schools, i.e. Bentley, Bryant or go to the NESCACS while WPI also gets a number of them.

While it seems there are a handful of MA players on RPI's roster from year to year, there might be more if there was a better understanding of what RPI truly has to offer vs. the competition.  Or for that matter what or where RPI even is.

Having said that, visiting the school w/ my son on an official recruiting weekend, RPI was far and above the best of the schools he visited with regard to the apparent effort  the FB staff and school put into the recruiting weekend and the overall presentation that resulted from those efforts.

Having the academic Department Heads, the AD, the Academic Advisor, Strength and Conditioning Coach, the head of the RPI FB Alumni et.al. speak to the prospective students and the package they they received with graduating student salaries and other persuasive docs, made it apparent that the members of the FB program and the school had made an real effort.  Not something I can say from other visits - to some programs you might think would put together a good weekend.

That being said.. how do you get more kids to visit?

I was talking more about trying to create a general interest in the games. Believe it or not, since most of the local HS football is played on sat at 1pm there is competition for an audience.

I wonder if the new stadium will be able to support night games.

Ive noticed that RPI has gotten much better nationwide in recognition, but there needs to be better PR locally to get people to the games.

RPI recruits very well especially for the standards.

labart96

First off, let TGP be the first to say although it's great to see Hobart getting props, TGP thinks SJF's monkey stomp win over IC was more impressive (and probably more deserving a #1 ranking) than a 24-17 win for Hobart over a good, yet fumble happy, RPI team.

Re: recruits - I agree with stimulator.  Hobart's squad (like most from Upstate) is heavy on NY kids, but we do have a solid (approx. 17%-20%) representation from "New England" kids from the MA/CT preps as well as a couple of publics.

I think Union does a good job picking those types of kids off leveraging their "NESCAC"-esque status which plays well to the bumper sticker conscious New England crowd.

Senor RedTackle

did LD11 start JP Losman in his fantasy team this week or was he kidding?...if so, he put up good numbers on Sun. Is yours a league where turnovers are a negative? That would negate JP's positive performance on Sun.

Anyhoo.....good first tailgate on Sat '86 field in Troy. While there was early rain, it was still a festive mood. RT agrees with the common complaint that there should've been more fans there...especially during a game of this caliber.

The competition is much greater than people realize regarding H.S. Football at 1pm.
The three night games I attended at Union were really good crowds. Many parents with H.S. athletes were able to attend. Every night game so far has been crowded and I think this weekends game is a night game. I know it would probably be pretty cold by the time Union and RPI square off, but if that was ever a night game....There would be an enormous crowd not to mention the tremendous ability to discreetly
consume beverages. Would probably need the police there along with local security to keep things under "control".  Would be huge for both schools.

Could always use the refs clothing to start mini campfires to stay warm!
