Can the LLPP please provide input on the pro's and con's of living in the Albany area?

One of TGP's classmates is considering a relo from the Hahtfud, CT to Albany, NY area for a job.

Pro: Big city, good money.
Con: It's f-ing Albany!

My advice: Live in Saratoga.

Major Pro: Redtackle lives in the area and your friend can catch RPI games easily.

RT actually lived in the Troy area after college in some nice new apartments on the Hudson River..this was about a 10 min drive to Albany.

When RT came back for his 2nd stint in the capital district since college, RT moved up to the Saratoga area. RT owned a townhouse in Ballston Spa...about 5 mi from Saratoga. In Dec '05, RT bought the 'Big Red Mansion' and officially became a Saratoga city resident. The BRM is about 5 blocks from the thoroughbread track (about 15 min walk) and about a $3 cab from the center of downtown and the main bar area.

RT would say to live in Saratoga...it's about a 35 min commute from BRM to Albany downtown.

Watching a Seinfeld rerun tonight....episode is where Elaine is dating the guy from the Jim and Jerry doesn't like him because he speaks in the 3rd person. They all end up speaking in the 3rd person....watching this episode takes gives a whole new perspective.

AUPepBand would enjoy that particular episode!

AUPepBand would agree that Albany may be a great place to make money but Saratoga Springs, indeed, appears to be a very nice place to live. Pep always enjoys his Saratoga spring(s) visit for NYPA convention. In fact, a survey of conferees overwhelmingly favored Saratoga over Albany as host conference site.

Why not Clifton Park, though, especially if someone works in Albany?  Morning commute can be a bitch.

Reg would never advise anyone to move to upstate NY for a job, however, if he had to pick an area there to move to, it would be Albany.  medium city, pretty stable, decent business, etc.

Reg sez "The closer he moves to albany, the better."  The commute to Saratoga is definately not worth the 2 months of debauchery that the race track brings in.  Does he own or rent in CT?

Re: Relo to Albany

If the job is in Albany, Saratoga would be a hike distance wise and the northway (I-87) is a pain in the arse in rush hour. Gro would reccommend Latham, Delmar, or Colonie.

Live in Halfmoon/B-spa/clifton park area. More than 1 route to both Toga and Albany. More and more things to do there. Everytime OX comes back he realizes how much the place is blowing up.   Ox lived there all his life and the traffic although its getting worse, isnt that bad. Then again Ox is comparing it to DC.

lewdogg11

I don't think moving from Hartford will be a huge difference.  Hartford is a sh!thole.  And let's all be honest, the traffic to and from Albany in reality is nothing.  its bad for upstate NY, but compared to real cities, it's not too bad.  I would look into Clifton park or Latham, but Saratoga is definitely the better spot.  Race Track aside, Toga has more bars, restaurants, and other places to have at your disposal,  and you have a WAY bigger chance in seeing purple haired combat boot wearing lesbians.

Ox took his younger brother (former utica receiver) to toga for his 21st last spring. Kind of a dead time of year in may but whatever, Rowan hooked us up at the TnL. Ox had a ND hat on. Feminist Scary comes over to Ox an young ox.  Are you Irish? she asked pointing to the hat. OX's brother replied (hammered) No we are Italian.

FS:" Your people raped and pillaged for centuries"

Ox : um what

FS: "I dont do Italian"

Ox: thats works out then because I dont do Ugly. Plus Im pretty sure your a dude....

Younger ox falls off bar stool laughing
