The NFL is designed for parity (free agency, salary cap) and head coaches have about 3-4 years to win it all or get the hook.

On its face - I believe your statement to be a truism, however, if you drill down you can find anecdotal evidence to the contrary.  Witness - Bill Cowher in Pittsburgh and Andy Reid in Philadelphia.  Both coaches, over the past years, enjoyed winning seasons and employment longevity, despite a system designed to reshuffle the talent each off season.  There are other examples also.

Winning in the NFL takes patience, wisdom, creativity and teamwork from the front office to the sidelines to the gridiron, not to mention some pretty spectacular athletes.  Not every franchise fires guys who do not win the Lombardi trophy, even after 3-4 years of being on the hook.

Lyco, point taken. Let me rephrase.

Lately, head coaches seem to only get 3-4 years to win it all. Jim Mora Jr went to the NFC championship 2-3 years ago then 2 mediocre seasons later he gets the can. Dennis green had a few good years with Minn then got the boot also.

I agree that teams should stick with a coach through tough times. Cower is a good example and so is Jeff Fisher in TN.

PBR...

evidently parcells (big tuna) has inquired about the gm position w/ the giants thru a 3rd party....giants said thx but no thx!! tuna is stuck w/ t.o. in big D

Agree to disagree

Reg says "there are three types of coaching positions out there. (or most other businesses for that matter-
#1 We want to see an immediate impact, your butt is on the line from day 1
#2 We will give you a fair shake but eventually want to see you turn this barge around...if you don't trend upward you are gone in a few years
#3 As long as you are still breathing, you can coach here....we know there will be highs and lows....but just don't die or try to retire on our dime.

'gro

But what if you make an immediate impact, then trail off a year or 2?  Some people (football or biznass) are doomed by early success.  In that case you have 2 options

1. Leave before they can fire you, trust me there's no loyalty.

2. Rip your bosses heart from his chest and harness the power of the sankara stones

Sir Spiedie

General LL question---Do all the LL teams conduct a summer football camp?

LOL...espn's sean salisbury has been suspended from espn for at least 1 week for undisclosed reasons....word is leaking out he evidently took numerous pix of his male organ w/ his cell fon and kept showing it to numerous women and would not stop....espn declined to comment on the story this outlet broke....too funny these dood's crack me up they all think they are above the law

Gro,
Anyone who gets themself into that position KNOWS that you described is indefinate.  If you are caught in this position it is usually for selfish reasons, where you jump ship before you turn too far south.

I mean seriously, who would take the USC coaching position if it became available today?  You won't see anyone take it unless there is a healthy, multi-year contract with no outs....where you will get an older coach that wants to take the money and move down after he bombs or retire and enjoy pina coladas on south beach....OR....you get some smuck that did the same thing in the Pros and wants to continue the same pattern.

How came you disagree with Reg??

PBR- Reg heard that he took multiple pics of his piece and used it as his screensaver in the office.  Could be hearsay!!!

'gro

reg you're losing me here, speak ingrish... Gro's just saying that sometimes you do so good off the bat that people get upset with average performance. Like if USC goes 9-3 and misses the BCS bowls next year people will want Carrol's head on a platter even though they know the next year he could easily go undefeated again.

PBR...

one has to question how they knew it was salisbury did they line up all the men and have them drop their trowsers...

I think the mess in Miami gives plenty of extra fodder to your statements, adding to it situations in which coaches choose to leave.  Now that program is probably, again, four years away from a playoff berth (of any substance).

They probably said, "ok sean, let's see your cellie"  Ok there is the picture every girl at the bar described....ok, now take off your pants...."  yup, thats it

Jonny Utah

Let me throw this out there to the LLPP faithfull.

So I like Starbucks coffee.  Not the frapuccino or lattee crap, but I get a medium (grande) dark roast and I drink it black.  But then there are people that I work with that look down on me like Im a wuss for drinking starbucks while they drink their Dunkin Donuts coffee with extra cream and sugar.

Is it me, or am I more of a man for drinking the stronger coffee black?
