I will note that a certain Jersey-ite who runs RowanFootball.com and writes the Around the Region East column on D3football.com didn't think the Union/RPI winner deserved a home game prior to the Ithaca and SJF losses in the final week.  Here were his predictions heading into the final week:

1. Delaware Valley (clinched Pool A – MAC champion)
2. Ithaca (clinched Pool A – E8 champion)
3. Wesley (should be awarded Pool B – ACFC champion)
4. St. John Fisher (probable Pool C)
5. RPI/Union winner (Pool A – Liberty League champion)
6. Rowan/Cortland (Pool A – NJAC champion)
7. Union/Hobart (possible Pool C)
8. Curry/Fitchburg State winner (possible Pool C)

He got #1 and #8 right.  :-)

Frank

Frank,

At the time of the article I was using the NCAA's regional rankings.  Note where Rowan was, I would have had them higher, even after the William Paterson loss.

Its obvious that Union is a quality club.  When you win you get noticed.  I don't know what the other regional d3 voters think....  the general feeling by most PP fans in the other regions is that the East sucks outside of Rowan.

One North region PP pundit basically said, "The East sucks outside of Rowan with Orihel they had a punchers chance at the Stagg... without him Rowan's done."  Im paraphasing but that is the essence of it.

This pundit's team got waxed by St. John's in the 2003 Stagg Bowl.  RPI... a team from the East played a better game against St. John's in the semi's.

When the Profs got blown out by a DI starting quarterback.... and plethora of five year players at Linfield, 2003 became distant memory to people outside our region.

Do I think the overall talent level of the OAC, NWC, WIAC, some Texas teams... is better than the Eastern leagues?  Yes.... but not as much as others do.

Mount Union may... I'm saying may have come down to being a great football team from all-world status.  And/or other teams are catching up... investing more resources in football etc.

Linfield is a very, very good team but they've caught lightning in a bottle for two years with that kid from Utah.

Respect is earned and we'll know from the final top 25 and next year's pre-season poll.

Ok now don't smite me right away, but did anyone ever see Unions football helmets up close?  You cant really tell from high up in the stands but the helmets (shutt I believe?) are really high up in the back of the neck, making the necks look really long and funny.  I kind of thought it made the whole team look small, kind of oompa loompa like up close.

That's the same concept as LD's underwear....really high up in the back and it makes his azz look funny and really small

RT, what are you doing analyzing my butt?  That's weird man.

A little information on Rowan:

Rowan has a lot of team speed and team depth. I'm even suprised by their depth. I've seen the shock on some opponents faces, when their bread and butter plays get stopped.  Especially when a Prof DE runs down a back on the other side of the field for little gain or a loss.

There is only one D1 transfer in the starting lineup: Wr. Sakeen Wright.  The four year guy Wr. Phil Silva is the 2005 NJAC POY however.  Orihel is out and the other D1 (a DL) hasn't cracked the starting lineup.  I think the DL has been subjected to disiplinary action by the coaches, because I haven't seen him around.

They lost two potential All-American's.  One on offense: QB- Orihel.  One on defense: DE - Brian Bond.  There are some other roll players banged up or out.

The team continues to evolve from injuries.  New contributors are playing well... especially at LB.

The QB Rankin continues to improve.  I'd rate him a quality D3 quarterback.  He's been getting comfortable with what he can do.  He got a decent arm... Orihel has a gun.  Rankin has been making the plays he's supposed to make and hasn't thrown an interception in two games.

Penalties at the wrong time can hurt the Profs.  Sometimes they might lack focus if they are up by a few scores in the game.  Offense has to move the ball to keep the defense fresh.

Spread offense but have mixed run and pass well this year.

union89

RT & AJ ~

Union89 was 14 of 16 with a key loss being W&J.....Union89 had W&J making a nice little run, so this could prove to very problematic to Union89's scholarship hopes at Abe & Louis' (scholarship meaning U89 not having to dig for any cash while swilling Bass Ales and the carcass of a cow).

Union89's scholarship hopes are also contingent on the Dutchmen winning the National Championship....

I think you LL  guys will get a good laugh over this report by Dan Padavona at www.cortlandfootball.com

Saturday November 19, 2005

"Cortland was eliminated in the opening round of the NCAA Playoffs by the Hobart Statesmen in Geneva, NY, 23-22. The Red Dragon loss is very difficult to explain, as Cortland dominated scrimmage. The Red Dragons had 24 first downs to Hobart's 12, and out-rushed Hobart 192-12. Although Hobart held the statistical passing advantage at 302-230, even this statistic is highly misleading. Hobart's starting quarterback Shawn Mizro passed for only 167 yards and was intercepted 3 times. Hobart's greatest passing success came as a result of passes off end around plays and fake punts."

Hark, I think we know why Hobart won.  The NCAA actually awards points for TDs off fake punts and end-around plays.

It woulda helped if Cortland coulda held onto the ball, as well.

OK, who's the spoilsport who put me from 0 Karma to -1 in a matter of about 5 minutes after I posted? That sucks. And I know as soon as El Guru sees it, I'll be at -2 for mentioning Karma.

Garnet is not really into this karma thing but many others talk about it often.  Garnet thinks the PP software should be tweaked so that each time someone's post gets smited or applauded, the smiter/applauder is divulged.

Perhaps there should be a button like the 'quote' button.  One could 'quote' and smite/applaud.  This way all the closet smiters would be revealed!

Just a thought.

/let the karma killing begin

Top Ten Excuses, err I mean reasons LL teams beat E8 teams

3.  Frank Rossi stole Ithacas playbook, drew red arrows all over it and gave it to Audino pointing out where Ithaca's weakspots are.

Redswarm, please do not take the above list seriously (by responding facetiously to sarcasm) ...thank you.

How do I always get dragged into these posts?
