I don't remember Rizzuto as a player, but I do remember him as a broadcaster.  He and Bill "Whitey" White did the Yankees games on WPIX 11 which I watched a fair amount as a kid.

Rizzuto was the master of telling odd stories and self-deprecating anecdotes during the game.  I remember how he scored plays "ww" for "wasn't watching" if he missed something and his mistaken calls of homeruns that were caught in front of the wall.  Without ever realizing it before today, I think watching Rizzuto as a kid definitely impacted my approach to calling games.  He showed me that broadcasting should be fun and that it can be if you don't take yourself too seriously.

There's a fine line between entertaining and irrelevant.  Rizzuto didn't just walk that line; he drew it.

Rest in peace, Scooter.

RIP Scooter, my father said he was lucky to live when he got to see Scooter and Pee Wee Reese play against each other and in the same era.  He always thought that they were two of the best ever.  He also said that Ozzie Smith was the only one he saw that was close.

I remember one Yankees broadcast when Scooter showed up around the fourth or fifth inning and when White asked where he was, Scooter admitted he got lost driving to Yankee Stadium, at which White cracked; How long have you been coming here?

He brought personality to the Yankee broadcasts, something the new announcers don't do.  Sure he did the games like he took a few too many bad hops off the forehead, but he was our guy.

I grew up listening to 'The Scooter' on 'PIX' as well....I always hated the Yankees, but honestly enjoyed Rizzuto.  Come to think of it, "Scooter' reminds me alot of Jerry Remy with his anecdotes and self-deprecating humor.

In all honesty, would you rather listen to 'Scooter' call a game with Bill White or those morons John Sterling and Susan Waltmann.......no comparison......RIP Phil.

Does anyone in the LLPP or other have a slingbox?  Reg is hoping he can try it out on his new mobile device before purchasing one.

RT's good friend has one. It's awesome.  We went on a fishing trip up to the RT family camp and he used it to watch all his channels from home, including TiVo, over the high speed internet. We accessed from RT's blackberry in the car on the way there but it was too much buffering for streaming video over phone speeds. RT doesn't recommend you use a phone to watch it

slingbox works on phones that run windows mobile or palm OS and a fast internet service like 3G. From what I've seen on the interweb there is a problem with slingbox and blackberries for now.

+K to Gordo and all others who fondly recall Phil Rizzuto on WPIX.  Good memories here, too.

Speaking of technology, any of you cats have a Sonos?

I was at a buddy's house who had one. I'm about this close to pulling the trigger on buying one of those.

You got it Reg. See, you start out listening to your itunes on shuffle in the living room. Then you grab your Hamm's and go out on the deck where you suddenly start to jones for some Lovin' Spoonful Summer in the City. So you pick up the Sonos device and dial it up on Rhapsody and hit "play" and "deck speakers" even crank it up while the itunes continue in the living room at steady volume.
Or, while the party's going on, you slide away into your love shack, select Barry White and "bedroom", the party continues while Barry assists you with your foreplay.  8)

Fins has all the Buffett and that song is on the "early foreplay" playlist. Then the Marvin Gaye and Barry White are on the "heavy petting" playlist for when you want to go low. Then the "afterglow" playlist has the entire Zamfir panflute collection. 8)
