Did they change the rules about division title/wild card playoffs since last season?

If two teams are tied, and both would make the playoffs anyway, then the team that won the regular season series gets the higher seed and the other gets the wild card.

That's why Detroit had to lose and Minnesota had to win on the final day last year for the Twins to win the ALC title -- if they'd tied, Detroit had won the season series.

Good point...Forgot about the season series rule -- which I think is a farce.  The exciting baseball has always been the one-game playoff, in my opinion -- but MLB wants to protect the pitchers of the teams, apparently, and avoid having the teams face each other in decisive "series" twice in the playoffs.

This weeks games
Saturday, September 29
1:00 pm C Hobart  at WPI      Hobart upends WPI
1:30 pm C Rensselaer  at Susquehanna   RPI cruises
2:00 pm C Rochester  at St. Lawrence   Rochester beats STLU
2:00 pm C Union  at Merchant Marine Union wins

Comments ....

RPI could be in for a slow start in Seligsgrove, PA.  The "Q" put up some heavy points late to force OT vs. SLU -- they are not the pushover everyone thought they would be.

Union's gonna have a tough fight in front of a Homecoming crowd at USMMA -- not an easy place to play AT ALL.  Union still wins in a barnburner.

WPI's gonna have to prove 4-0 is not a fluke.  This one's going to OT, with Hobart pulling it out.

Rochester is a very good team.  SLU was a little banged up defensively vs. the "Q".  Net result:  Rochester in a romp.

Frank,
Dan Mehelisen is coaching the Q's dbacks

This also occured in the AL East  2 years ago where the Red Sox and Yankees both finished with the same record and the Yankees were given the division based on head to head record.

Yep...and Dan, if you're reading -- TOO MANY POINTS vs. SLU LAST WEEK!  Your DBs aren't Mehleisens, ya know.  Play them a little softer in coverage, else RPI will be hitting the cash register buttons early and often like Gro hitting the men's room after a night at the Ruck.

Frank -

Sox only need to win 2 more to clinch the AL East.  Yanks clinched last night.

The AL field is set.  Now its more of a race to determine who'll get Home Field.

Or the Yankees need to lose 2...or any combination therein.  That's what we determined last night -- and there's no playoff, as the Yanks won the season series.  Also, we need to pay attention to the best record in the AL, as the Angels are fighting the Sox for the new "decision" rights as to the schedule of the AL winner's series.  Sox need a day off, so it's important.

The HFA race is between Cleveland and Boston.  Angels fell back to 2.5 behind the Indians and Sox b.c they got swept in their last series.

Here's a Rossi-like break-down:

WHAT THEY'RE PLAYING FOR

Division winner with best record: Gets home field for division and championship series, and also gets to choose whether to start its first series on Wednesday (with three off days during the series) or Thursday (two off days). AL champ also gets home field for World Series because of league's victory in All-Star game.

Division winner with second-best record: Gets home field for division series, and could have home field for championship series if top team does not advance.

TIEBREAKERS

Red Sox and Indians tie: Red Sox win because of 5-2 edge in season series.

Red Sox and Angels tie: Red Sox win because of 6-4 edge in season series.

Yankees and Indians tie: Yankees win because of 6-0 edge in season series.

Yankees and Angels tie: Angels win because of 6-3 edge in season series.

Indians and Angels tie: The season series was even at 5-5, so Indians win by virtue of better divisional record (46-23 vs. Central, while Angels are 30-21 vs. the West).

Red Sox, Indians, and Angels all tie: Red Sox are No. 1 seed because they have combined 11-6 record vs. the other two clubs (Angels 9-11, Indians 7-10); Indians get No. 2 seed because their tie with Angels reverts back to two-team tiebreaker.

Yankees, Indians, and Angels all tie: Yankees are No. 1 seed because they have combined 9-6 record vs. the other two clubs (Angels 11-8, Indians 5-11); Indians get No. 2 seed because their tie with Angels reverts back to two-team tiebreaker.

THE MATCHUPS

The team with the best record meets the wild card, unless they are from the same division. In that case, the team with the best record plays the division winner with the worst record. So, the Red Sox could not play the Yankees in the divisional series
