Lyco80, what do you do in the Navy, Knightstalker was a submarine torpedoman.  Got out in 84.

KS,

You just have got to love a Sailor who serves on a boat that is designed to sink - but will it return to the surface?

Navy Chaplain - joined in 1986 - currently a Commander but have been selected for promotion to Captain and will pin on the eagle in August 2006.

Been all over the world - including East Africa, Djibouti, a long way from the MAC, LL, E-8 and anything else familiar to this boy from Philly.

Thanks for asking.  How was the rest of the pie?

ATB

Knightstalker enjoyed the pecan pie, thank you.  As long as the ship surfaces as many times as it sinks it is ok.  There was only one time I thought we might not surface again.  Leaving France we took a wave that was higher than the sail, the OOD and Lookout didn't get the hatch shut in time and I was sitting in the control room at the fire control console talking to the XO when all of a sudden an 18 inch diameter column of water came down the bridge trunk just as the some colorful expletives came down on the speaker from the bridge and the collision alarm sounded.  The XO and I both disappeared into the column of water and pulled the hatch shut.  Neither he or I remember doing this, I just remember standing in the control room soaking wet and looking for the XO's and my glasses.

Congrats on the bird, are you retiring anytime soon or staying in longer than twenty years.

A Navy Chaplain?   Why does Rolevio all of a sudden feel guilty about his PP language?

Trust me, Ro, having served nine years with the Marine Corps - nothing makes me blush any more.   I hope I can get nine more years with those Devil Dogs too - they are some mighty fine Americans - although they do have a penchant for breaking things.

Knightstalker,

Great sea story - especially since you lived to retell it!

Planning on staying longer, Mrs. Lyco is much younger than me and pregnant with prototype 2, requiring recalibration of retirement clock and benefits.

Inidications are likely for a full lobotomy making me a 30 year lifer - now that brings you some sea stories!!!

Thanks for the congrats - it was a tough slog to quote someone in the chain of command.

There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. Some kind of high powered mutant never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

Anyone think UCLA has any chance of sidetracking USC?

Will ND get a bid?

Rolevio wasn't concerned with making Lyco blush, more along the lines of Momma didn't raise no disrespecting fool.

Rolevio still thinks his mother would come at Rolevio with a baseball bat if he were  ever disrespectful to a priest or minister.

UCLA... good chance, if fresno and ND came close so can the LALA's.

ND will get a bid, bowl games are about money and ND has a huge following.

Rolevio

Since Gro asked, Rolevio will reveal his path to Union.

First, Rolevio is by no means an athlete, due to a circulatory problem, so Rolevio has no recruiting stories.  Though Rolevio did work with the hockey program his last two years at Union.

Rolevio went into his search knowing he wanted to go into Civil Engineering. and wanted to stay in the Northeast but no closer than an hour to his native Northeastern Mass.  Rolevio applied and was accepted to the following schools, UMass-Amherst, UMass-Dartmouth, Northeastern, WPI, RPI, Union, Lehigh, and Villanova.

Rolevio had no real intention of going to either UMass or Northeastern. so tossed them out and before receiving Financial Aid Rolevio had the remaining ranked from high to low Lehigh, RPI, Villanova, Union, WPI.

Rolevio received the financial aid information and Villanova's sucked so it was tossed out the window, RPI's was the best of the private schools and since RPI and WPI are extremely similiar and RPI has a better academic index and RPI was further away Rolevio tossed WPI from consideration.  Both UMass's came back with free rides in Academic grants, so Rolevio decided to add UMass-Amherst back on the list for financial reasons.

So going into the stretch run Rolevio had his final list down to:
1. Lehigh (Pro: Loved the school.  Con: Financial Aid slightly too light, Bethlehem)
2. RPI (Pro:  Great Engineering Program.  Con: Engineering School, Troy)
3. Union (Pro:  Great Academics, Not a tech school.  Con:  Financial Aid just barely affordable, Schenectady)
4. UMass-Amherst (Pro:  Free, Friends there Con:  Huge, Academically not as strong)

Despite being already to accept his admission to Lehigh (Rolevio was well sold on the school) Rolevio accepted the fact he couldnt get the school to at least match Union's offer and had to drop Lehigh)  So Rolevio went on a second visit to the last 3 schools.

Second visits went as:
RPI:  Arrived on campus early on a Sunday to find 75 or so students waiting for the library to open a half hour later.  Asked several students how they liked RPI, Students all started feeding Rolevio Princeton Review rankings and trying to make excuses as to why RPI was so much lower than MIT.  Rolevio had trouble comprehending why people were even up on a Sunday Morning.  Rolevio hasn't been up on a Sunday morning voluntaringly since Rolevio was out of Sunday School.

Union:  Was the same Sunday as RPI visit, but Rolevio spent the night. Despite being a Sunday night Rolevio found the student body to be much more relaxed and instead of being fed rankings, Rolevio was told how much RPI sucks and other such language Guru won't allow Rolevio to say.  Riolevio was also impressed with how many had studied abroad.

UMass:  Arrived on campus for some honors program introduction that was being parralleled with a general open house.  Rolevio spent most of the time suspecting Admissions had no clue what they were saying, then went ona  dorm tour to a pre-prepared dorm room.  When the Honors program part spun off, Rolevio went and had a meeting with the Civil Engineering Department Head which was spent half the interview laughing at how ridiculous the hot air that Admissions spewed was.  Rolevio left UMass knowing that despite being free, UMass couldnt be trusted.

And thus Rolevio chose Union based pretty much on the fact that the student body at Union seemed a bit more relaxed than RPI.  Rolevio also noticed Union employees tended to take some pride in the school where he didn't see any evidence of that at RPI.

Interesting story Ro...

back in the late 90's Gro was at practice for the section II all star game (which was later cancelled because UNION didn't want to clear the snow and ice off the field... strike 1 dutchmen). Couple of D3 coaches were there. Had a few visits at school with me and the other 2 kids from my team who actually planned on going to college. UR, RPI, Union, WPI, Norwich, Alfred, Hobart, Albany, Siena.

Had 3 HS coaches go to Norwich, but location was a killer. Location again with Alfred. Bart didn't have engineering. Siena, Albany... thanks for playing. Applied to RPI, WPI, Union, and UR... would of applied to Carnegie Mellon and Wash U (St. Louis) but didn't want to take the SAT II.

Union: Great sales pitch, but it was a sales pitch. Liked how they set the goal of winning a national championship. Nice professors, class settings, etc. Wasn't a big fan of Audino and Brown's style. 2nd in Financial aid.

UR: Fun visit. Very good school. Liked Rochester. Felt well liked by the coaches and the players I met. On the negative, no highlight video!! They really didn't talk football much, coming off that major player suspension they had. Promised playing time, but their roster was loaded with younger players. Financial aid on par with the others. Would of gone there but...

RPI: Kinger pulled no punches. Stressed academics from day 1. Gave an honest opinion of the team and where I'd fit in (said I'd probably travel as a freshmen and could see PT as a soph). Felt more comfortable studying engineering here then at a lib arts school. Dorms sucked, the facilities sucked. Nerds everywhere, girls nowhere. Financial aid package was tight... best out of the 4.

WPI: Same as RPI, but smaller... young roster didn't see the PT that I could have at RPI.

Looking back, wouldn't have changed a thing. Would have been on special teams freshmen year but a broken ankle put Gro out for the season. Started at LB the next year... and like RT said "The rest is history".

Knightstalker

Knightstalker thinks he has found the team bus for the LL PP all-star football team.

Budcrew agrees with ZA... Thank you for serving this great country.
I applaud both of you.

KS - love the bus. Went to a Tampa game once... didn't see it. Maybe they will relocate to the pirate ship in the endzone stands.

P.S. only in the dirty south...

So, do we have any interest in putting together an annual Post Patterns LL vs. E8 flag football game (rotating between LL and E8 sites over the next few years)?  Sounds like an interesting early spring event.

That would be a fun time... I'd be in.
