Quote from: Upstate on November 12, 2007, 09:07:22 PMRev, SJF does not look at Bart as a lesser team.  Honestly this is about the most even match up in the first round in the East.  Bart has a really impressive and explosive passing game and has always had an aggressive and opportunistic Defense. SJF will not overlook Bart, they saw what they did to AU.

Honestly its probably a one score game, I think SJF has a slight advantage on defense especially at the DT (Becton/Schenk) and CB/S position (Stepnick/Miranto).  Watch out for their OLBers though they're very athletic and can hurt you in coverage or coming off the edge.

Unless the QB's for each team get turnover happy I think its a 24-17 game.

I'm going to actually go out on a limb and say that the betting money is on Hobart in the Hobart/SJF game.

I'd take Hobart plus the points, these two teams are pretty even.  Even though i think SJF pulls it out, it will be a tight game.

That response was certainly elaborate, so much so that I nearly missed the only additional substantive information (i.e., elaboration) in the penultimate entry.

I agree with your line of frank thinktanking.  I've been saying since about week 6 that the Empire8 this season was properly titled the Erratic8.  I asked on the E8 board, and there was general agreement with my assessment--even the insiders couldn't explain E8ything.  The last third of the season didn't make things any clearer in the Erratic8.

The national observers have loved SJF all season long, and no one has explained to me how Hartwick is such an overwhelming d3 power that Fisher's loss to Hartwick shouldn't have cost SJF serious loss in standing.  Since Fisher's inexplicable loss to Hartwick, Fisher has played five teams.  Of those five, the two best records are owned by 5-5 Brockport, and 7-3 Alfred, whom Fisher played in the final act of Alfred's fold-like-a-camp-stool big 2007 finish.

Hobart has indeed been on a tear since its last second loss to RPI, and when you look at Hobart's opening game OT loss to Dickinson, Hobart is two plays from an undefeated season.  Their helmets still look like pumpkins, though.

I think it comes down to this:

Hartwick at home
5-0, average score 34.0-26.6.
Massey rank of home opponents: 28, 122, 13, 211, 99 (one in bottom 100)

Hartwick on the road
3-2, average score 41.8-41.8
Massey rank of road opponents: 165, 56, 216, 189, 165 (one in top 100)

Hartwick plays a little better at home. OK, a lot better.

I saw that in my computer ratings too Pat.  The thing is though, so much of it is contingent upon the first game vs. WNEC.  If you pull out that game and consider it an aberration, suddenly there is not so much of a spread between home-and-away performance.
