I love lacrosse as much as the next guy, and remember being ball boy for one of the Statesmen - Orangemen games when my dad was referee back before they started moving kids away from the endlines.  But c'mon!  Y'all are playing the top team in the country in football in a few days!  I came around here looking to talk pigskin.  I'll drift back to the OAC board and hope that some of y'all make it over to Alliance for the weekend.

JP,

The Rev very very nearly bought a ticket to OH to see the play-off game this weekend, but plans went south when a $540 ticket turned into an $800 in the time it took The Rev to look at the itinerary and click on the "Click here" button.  Damn.

The Rev is now thinking that Greyhound could probably get him from AZ to OH in time for the game if The Rev leaves on Wednesday.

But seriously, The Rev decided that he will spend Thanksgiving in La Jolla, CA instead of freezing his little altar boy off in the cold in OH or NY.

Rev-

I seriously think that the "price change during booking" is some sort of scam that the airlines are running on consumers.  MR has had this happen TWEECE in the last 2 bookings.  Coincedence?....come on....  It's only been 10 mins, how would this have happened?

#23 Hobart 33 – Lycoming 15

The Hobart Statesmen (9-1) fell behind early, but rallied to score 33 points to defeat the visiting Lycoming College Warriors (7-4) last Saturday in a NCAA first round play-off game at Boswell Field in Geneva.   The 33 points scored were the Statesmen's second highest offensive output on the season.  With the win,  Hobart advances to the second round of the NCAA tournament.  The Statesmen travel to Alliance, OH to play the #1 team in nation, Mount Union College (11-0) this Saturday for a 12 PM EST kick-off.

Lycoming's first play from scrimmage was a 44 yard screen pass and run by RB Josh Kleinfelter (held to 19 carries for only 49 yards, well off his 100+ game average during the regular season).  It ended up being the Warriors' biggest gain of the day.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Warriors took advantage of a SR FS Mike Reese 55 yard interception return to the Hobart five yard line.  It was Reese's second interception of Hobart QB Rich Doyle on consecutive possessions.  In both cases Doyle under threw a wide open receiver, raising questions over the health of his separated shoulder.  The SR Capt did not practice all week, but still got the start for Hobart.  However, it was Lycoming QB Colin Dwyer who scored the first touchdown of the game when he called his own number on a one yard run following the Doyle turn-over.  It would be the last time Lycoming saw the end zone until the final six seconds of the game.

Hobart (and Doyle) responded by driving 70 yards on 10 plays.  The drive culminated on a 10 yard touchdown pass and catch from Doyle to SR WR Zach Schultz.  Schultz lead the Statesmen with 76 yards on seven receptions.  His one-handed TD catch may not have happened without the aid of pass interference penalty keeping Hobart alive on a fourth and five play from the Lyco 25.

After another three and out, Hobart drove into Lycoming territory again – and another Lycoming penalty (this one for helmet to helmet contact/spearing) gave the Statesmen a first and goal after the additional   yardage was applied to a great SO WR Andy Schettine 34 yard catch.  On the ensuing play, Hobart SR QB Rich Doyle (20 for 41 passing for 206 yards), completed his second 10 yard touchdown reception to JR WR Tyler Vincent (three receptions for 29 yards).  The Statesmen took the 14-7 lead into the half and never looked back.

Hobart limited the Warriors to 52 yards of total offense in the second half.  The Statesmen offense on the other hand, scored two field goals off the kicks of FY PK Conor Callahan (good from 26 and 27 yards) and two rushing touchdowns, one by SO RB Andrew Marlier (24 carries for 96 yards) and the other from Rich Doyle (3 carries for 8 yards).  The Statesmen's longest play from scrimmage was by FY RB Kyle Tritton (eight carries for 68 yards) who had a 40 yard dash on the last play of the third quarter.

All in all, this was probably Hobart's most complete performance of the season.  The offense gained 424 total yards (205 rushing and 219 passing) and 25 first downs.

As usual the defense saw outstanding performances from SR LB Justin Hager and SR DT Ryan Aruck  who both had nine tackles on the day.  However, the real star of the defense was "Mighty Mouse" SR FS Lance Boyington who had a hat trick by picking off Lyco QB Colin Dwyer three out of the four times Dwyer was intercepted.

As predicted, turnovers and time of possession (TOP) were critical to Hobart, and the Statesmen finished +2 in turnover margin and dominated TOP 37:41-22:19.

With the victory Hobart not only tied the season record for most wins (nine) and improved their record in first round NCAA play-off games to 4-1 at Boswell Field.

TGP will provide an overview of the Hobart-Mount Union (aka David vs. Goliath) match-up later this week.  For anyone interested in a radio recap of the Hobart-Lycoming game as well as preview of the Hobart-MUC game, please check out the archived November 23 broadcast of "In the Huddle":

Myself and WEOS/Hobart Football play by play announcer, Ted Baker (no relation), appeared on the show.

Believe it or not, it is the real deal.  I should have known better than to dilly-dally during Thanksgiving week.

Ticket prices are really a two-variable function: time and demand.  Once you get within 14 days of the flights, tickets start their upward leaps.  Seven day prior is another leap, and sometimes you'll even see a 3-day prior leap.  On top of that you have people buying up inventory, which then knocks tickets into different "buckets" which also causes price leaps.

Every once in a while a ticket price will actually drop.  The Yield Manager over-estimated the demand and therefore had to lower the bucket, dropping the price.  I had this happen on Delta.  They wanted $1200 for a trip from Yuma, AZ to Washington, DC.  I just about blew a gasket.  Went back two days later it was $575.  They completely mis-predicted sales.

Anyway, as funky as it seems, the "3 tickets left at this price" more realistic than it appears.

Rev -

La Jolla is a personal fave of TGP.  Enjoy your holiday in the SD area.

TGP is heading to FLA to meet up with the wife and kids, who flew out early.

Flying back Saturday, but should be able to check in on the MUC-Bart game prior to departure.

With Christmas coming up, The Rev has two wishes:

a) an iPhone...depends on if Rev wants to drop T-mobile and his Blackberry Pearl. (it's $200 to ditch contract early.)

b) a PSP.  The Rev has seen a lot of these around airports and airplanes. Could be fun for those trans-continental flights.

If there were a such things as "Thanksgiving Wishes" The Rev would pray for the "Miracle at the Mount" in which Hobart defeats MUC.  The Rev is sure God likes Episcopalians better than Methodists anyway.  :P

I will buy you a damn IPhone if we win, and it will be worth it.

Wait.  I mean, God will provide one.  Right.  That's what will happen..............      ;D

There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. Some kind of high powered mutant never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

Its probably safe to say that Hobarts best chance is by throwing the ball.  Thats not necessarily a bad thing against MUC I dont think.

Did someone say Hobart runs a 4-4?  That might be a decent defense against MUC as well.

The 4-4 didnt do to hot vs MUC with SJF running it...

MUC spreads you out alot so unless you plan on playing cover zero all game you really wont see alot of opportunities to run their base D...

The Rt. Rev., Garnet, and others...

No disrespect intended to any of you or to the board.  I was just surprised to find little discussion of the game.  I think I may have mentioned once a long time ago, but the Rt. Rev. has one of my favorite handles on the boards.  As an Episcopal Priest originally from Rochester, sponsored for ordination by that diocese, and one with some of those fond Hobart lacrosse memories, it's a great thing to see!

Anyways, bishop, I feel for your difficulties in buying a plane ticket.  I lived in Texas a while, and now am in Virginia.  It took all the restraint I had not to sneak onto the plane that Trinity chartered when they played Mount Union in the Stagg Bowl.  Prices were just too high for me back then.

As to the hope for running a 4-4 against Mount Union, I agree with Johnny Utah's assessment that Mount Union will spread you out too much to really settle into that type of defense.  You really need to focus on taking away Cecil Shorts with probably double coverage (both over the top and underneath) and then hope to keep the other receivers covered long enough to try and get a hand on Micheli

Mount's biggest weakness this year is in the middle of the D-line, which means a good attack is straight up the middle with the runs.  With the speed of Mount's defensive ends, there's not going to be a lot of opportunities to throw deep, and with the speed of the linebackers, short passes across the middle will be tough to complete.

Good luck to the Statesmen this weekend!  I hope it's going to be a good game to listen to from down here.  This is a good year to be able to stay with Mount Union and force them to start to wonder a bit.
