So JU goes into a Bagel Place today to get a coffee (Brugers Bagels).  I get a large coffee and thats it.  The lady rings me up, and it comes to $2.02.  So I reach into my pocket and have no change, just 3 one dollar bills.  So I look around the counter to see if there is one of those penny holders that many places have so people don't have to waste their time swapping loads of coin and whatnot.  Anyway, I don't see any penny holders but there is a tip glass with tons of pennies and change.  But no, what does this d-bag do?  Takes my $3 and starts to go through the till for 98 cents in change.  Thats right, instead of just reaching into the tip jar and just putting 2 ****ing cents into the register, she goes the whole ****ing 9 yards and gives me 98 cents in change.

But wait, theres more.  Right before she drops 13 coins into my palm, she grabs the ****ing RECEIPT and throws it in my hand and then drops the ****ing coins on top of the ****ing receipt like a ****ing paper weight!  Nothing pisses JU off more than cashiers giving me a receipt for something stupid like coffee, gum, or a coke.  These ****holes should ask if you want a receipt and not assume you want it.

Rant ****ing over.

I don't understand tip jars/glasses in places like that anyway.  The menu says $1.75 for a CUP of coffee, and $0.99 for a SLICED bagel, plus $0.39 for a SCHMEAR.  So you give me the cup, along with the sliced bagel and schmear, and I pay you.  What's the tip for?  You didn't refill my glass, you didn't bring me extra salsa or bread, you didn't do anything other than exactly what I already paid for--what's with the tip jar?

+k...exactly pbr appreciates the ones who ask if u want a receipt. really why the f would pbr want a receipt for a pack of gum pbr bought....this is why pbr really likes patronizing the locally owned shops. most of those owners would of said dont worry about the .02....that is what keeps people coming back and they end up making more in the long run. the franchises never offer that and you get a brass knuckle of coins back. and who needs pennies anyway? really just round the ish up and pbr will pay the xtra few cents not to have to carry the annoying pennies around and the govt can stop stamping them and save money...

Quote from: Doid23 on November 10, 2009, 10:24:02 AM
Gentlemen,

I share your concerns, and never understand why they don't just eat the 2 cents (well, actually, I do, having worked in retail my adult life, cashiers are programmed not to think). I think the bigger issue is, why do pennies still exist? Hell, I'd even eliminate the nickel. Dime's can stay for a while, but their time is short in my mind as well.

But the real question is, what are you guys doing still using cash?

Exactly.  Get rid of them.  They're 98% zinc.  Why can't the environmentalists get in an uproar about metal contamination of the soil and zinc-borne illnesses?

$2.02 in cash?  Are you crazy?  In Roxbury's favorite bagel joint?  I don't even understand why you're using debit cards.  Get that Costco AmEx, with the minimum 1% rebate (3% on restaurants including Brugger's Bagels), and float that $2.02 in your 1.75% high yield checking account at the credit union until the bill is due.

If you are going to go debt card.  Get a paypal account and a paypal debt card.  Paypal links to your bank account and hits it when you use the card.  The nice part is you get 1.5% back in cash.  You can also transfer money to your paypal account and get a little interest on the balance.

See I don't mind tipping these places because some of these workers deserve it.  They don't get paid anything extra for working their ass off, and they don't get paid any less if they take 10 minutes to pour you a cup of coffee.  Starbucks workers in general work their asses off and I tip them when I have the extra buck.  Dunkin Donuts these days have some of the worst, laziest workers around.

And maybe its the economy but these places can be cheap ****s.  I don't care how bad the economy is, Dunkin Donuts stores in the Boston areas are going to make money no matter what.  In my home town there are about 12 within 3 square miles.  If they have 100 customers every 30 minutes during the morning rush, then hire enough people so there isn't a line of 20 people.  I know the franchise owner is still going to make money no matter what, and hes just being a cheap prick when he doesn't hire enough people.

follow up on the discussion yesterday.......

timely article in today's Wall St. Journal

By REED ALBERGOTTI and SHIRLEY S. WANG

This football season, the debate about head injuries has reached a critical mass. Startling research has been unveiled. Maudlin headlines have been written. Congress called a hearing on the subject last month.

As obvious as the problem may seem (wait, you mean football is dangerous?), continuing revelations about the troubling mental declines of some retired players—and the ongoing parade of concussions during games—have created a sense of inevitability. Pretty soon, something will have to be done.

But before the debate goes any further, there's a fundamental question that needs to be investigated. Why do football players wear helmets in the first place? And more important, could the helmets be part of the problem?

"Some people have advocated for years to take the helmet off, take the face mask off. That'll change the game dramatically," says Fred Mueller, a University of North Carolina professor who studies head injuries. "Maybe that's better than brain damage."

Dude, you have no idea how good you have it at Dunkin Donuts up North...

In North Carolina, it take you 47 minutes to get a coffee...1, because the workers are slow as sh!t and are in no rush, 2, because the workers are dumb, and 3, because there are still a ton of morons that order 5 sandwiches at the Drive-Thru window at morning rush hour.  Don't you know the drive thru at rush hour is for coffee and donuts?  MAYBE a bagel...  There are rules, rednecks!

aint that the truth...pbr remembers numerous times going into hardees down south while on a road trips and needed to get in and get out speed wise and back on the road...put the order in and they tell you it will be about 15-20 minutes because they have to warm up the deep fryer for the fries and the grill for the burgers....wtf??? its 11:45 right in the middle of lunchtime rush and your just turning on the f'n grills? soon you hear the burgers hitting the grill...pbr was livid this is "fast food"? the only time pbr has seen them move quick and hear tires squealing down south was everytime in myrtle beach when krispy kreme clicked on the neon sign "hot donuts now"....1 other thing bothers pbr...just back at my desk w/ lunch there are 5 people in front of pbr at the deli line in the kitchen the girl in front of pbr waits until she gets to the guy making the sandwiches to try and make up her mind? you just have been standing in line for 10 minutes wtf are you doing? they should make it like in philly when ordering cheesesteaks if your not ready to bark out your order when called you have about .5 seconds to yell it out they go right onto the next person and you get back in line at the end and wait all over again....whew rant over

DewCrew,
Can you help me understand why some reporters feel the need to add information such as "a practice rappers call "makin' it rain"" to their articles?
Seriously, what value did that add to the article?  Do you think some 78 year old lady in tampa is now that much more intellegent that she now knows what it's called when rappers throw money in the air?

Secondly, I urge all LLPP members to read the following article.....I honestly cannot believe the washington post published this.... I'd love to hear everyones thoughts on this!http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/05/17/AR2009051702053.html

BTW- my favorite line of the article "The poor pay more in hassle: the calls from the bill collectors, the landlord, the utility company. So they spend money to avoid the hassle. The poor pay for caller identification because it gives them peace of mind to weed out calls from bill collectors. "....what a brilliant idea....

Why are you surprised that the Post published the article? Seems like just their kind of subject to me. And I have no idea what sort of response you'll get here, but try posting it on the political board also. I suspect you'll get more than you want to read.

alright since everyone on the LLPP thinks a tip jar at a wedding is cheesy and not classy pbr suggests if/when this happens at a wedding next time take the tip jar and make it rain like these doods did at their wedding....

TAMPA, Fla.,  Nov. 10 (UPI) -- Police said dollar bills
thrown on the dance floor during a Florida wedding reception
led to a brawl that spread to a nearby hotel.
Investigators said the groom, Markeith Brown, threw the
dollar bills onto the dance floor for children to collect, a
practice rappers call "makin' it rain," and along
with his brother confronted a guest who criticized the practice
at the Rusty Pelican Restaurant in Tampa, the St. Petersburg
(Fla.) Times reported Tuesday.
The confrontation grew into a fight that spread among
guests and spilled into the restaurant's parking lot. Police
said one intoxicated man was hit on the head with a brick.
Officers said Malcolm Anthony Hepburn, 30, a convicted
felon who was not at the wedding, heard his cousin had been hit
by a brick and confronted members of Brown's family at the
Residence Inn shortly after the reception fight.
Hepburn allegedly attacked Brown's father, Andrew
Thompson, 47, while a female accomplice allegedly put her hands
around the neck of Brown's grandmother, Mary Wright, 74, and
threatened to choke her.
Police arrived and Hepburn was charged with felony
battery, carrying a concealed firearm, grand theft of a
firearm, and being a felon in possession of a firearm.  His
alleged female accomplice was identified by police but not
immediately arrested.
Brown was not charged by police and left with his new
bride on a cruise.

Is the 'Rusty Pelican' any relation to the 'Rusty Trombone'?

Of course that may mean that you don't get a 4 cent tip on top of your $7.25 hr wage.....but that's what they invented college for.

Good line.

Whoa, easy there on the assumptions. Especially in this economy. If you're working in food service or retail, that doesn't automatically mean you're uneducated. I took a second job in retail for three years to help make ends meet after some personal $h!t went down.

I'll go easy on assumptions, but let's be real....I haven't worked for minimun wage since I was under legal working age....you expect me to believe that it is acceptable to do it now?
One assumption I will make is that if you are educated and working retail, that you should have no problem working your way up in the organization....not punching keys or flipping burgers.

I certainly hope you didnt come to this thread for sympathy.

Well, congratulations to you. You must be perfect and your career and life must be on a completely straight and upward path. Way to go, dude.

I sure as hell didn't come here for sympathy but I wanted to offer a little perspective, which clearly went over your head. I'm sorry my imperfect life offended you.

I gotta agree with Grove man here.  Some people just don't understand that it IS a difficult time, and jobs are not plentiful for a lot of people and some markets are way worse than others.  Unfortunately, bills still have to be paid, so people do what they have to do...not that selling bagel's at Bruegger's is where I would go first...

Ditto.

BTW Vets should not forget the food chains offering them a free meal or food today, and later this week.  JT is taking Dad to MCCormick and Schmick's for lobster on Sunday.

As others have stated, a giant Thank You to all Vets.

That is a classic article Reg.  I mean, I can see making the argument that being poor is harder than being rich, but more expensive!?!  Ok, I can see how having bad credit is going to make things more expensive, but some of this other stuff makes me sick.

But this is my favorite line in the article:

(Regarding how one man can't go to a bank and is forced to pay $15 to cash a $300 check)
"But his story is as complicated as the various reasons people find themselves in poverty and in need of a check-cashing joint. He says he lost his driver's license and now his regular bank "won't recognize me as a human. That's why I had to come here. It's a rip-off, but it's like a convenience store. You pay for the convenience."

He lost his ****ing drivers license?  Thats a complicated story?  I would bet my house that you don't need a drivers license to open up a bank account in Maryland or anywhere in this country for that matter.
