My mom loves gift cards to the local "beauty bar" (aka salon) that she uses to get pedicures. Anything "pampering" related like manis, pedis or massages usually go over well.

That pampering ish works. Gift cert for a facial and massage is a nice touch.  Just make sure its a top flight joint and not one of those rub and tug places you may frequent.
