Surprised Frank thinks he can write of Vella after his first year, as a SO, as starter.  HE has a ton to prove, but the talent's there.  Mizro was good his SO year, but had a better running game (Blackowski) and two of Bart's best receivers ever in Suozzi and Pinero (and Colby Feane was a really good 3rd option too), so it's not a reasonable comparison.  Totally fired up by the confidence and admission that they walked into a buzzsaw thinking teams were going to lay down for them last year.  He's righ tabout the back end of the season and the improvement.  Also fired  up about this Webb kid.  He had crazy HS stats, but at a small school, so it's hard to translate, but the way Vella was on his nuts I've got to think he's going to be a potent weapon.  Bart doesn't seem to have the size of a couple of years ago, but superior speed and skill.

Love teh upgrades in schedules w RPI picking up AU and Bart grabbing SJF.  I think RT's right, if things break right and some FR contribute for the teams, you could have a 2005 all over agian.  Some leaps need to be made by all teams though.  Didn't agree with Frank's 04-05 analysis for Union, but I just assume it's the rose glasses we all have.  Also not convinced Coney, good as he is, will bebetter than Arciddicono (Sp).

Thanks for listening, pa.  My statement re: Vella was an answer to the question of whether he would become as good as Mizro.  I said Vella would be a good quarterback but wouldn't reach Mizro's level in my opinion.  They are two completely different QBs in style.  Remember that Vella was brought in two years ago when his feet and legs were needed more than his arm.  I don't think he has as good an arm as Hobart QBs of yesteryear.  However, I still picked Hobart to finish 2nd in the LL, so I must have some level of confidence in his leadership abilities this year.

As for Union 04-05 vs. 09-10, what specifically don't you agree with so I an better answer your view on that?  The Coney vs. TA question doesn't make or break that analysis.  However, Coney has never had the luxury of having two receivers like Angiletta and Twitchell like TA had.  If both Gallos excel this year, defenses are going to have to give Coney more latitude than past years -- and that could reinvigorate his numbers this season to TA-type numbers.

Not really a big deal, but I saw both of those hobart-union games and I just felt like 04-05 teams were better, certainly different.  Two biggest differences I can think of is that Twitchell and Angiletta were awesome workers and downfield blockers and they ate up yards on screens and short routes like that (one of them had a nasty block to seal what was still a 3 pt game in Schenectady in '05 with like 2 minutes left - a very good game, which one wouldn't realize looking at the box score, by two good teams).

Gallo, the one who played last year, is a downfield threat, talented but different.

The other is that even though Marotti was screwy, I thought most of his poor play was against lesser opponents, whereas Connelly was ok last year, but I'm not sure he's played as well against the top teams as Marotti.  Seems like a different system where Connelly's going to throw downfield a ton and never have a good percentage,  and they live and die on long passes, so maybe that's why I'm partial to Marotti (I know he threw a ton of picks).

I liked your 04-05 D's better as well.  No way a guy like Marlier would've just crushed it up the middle all the time on those teams.  Plus you had teh midget that was a great playe.  That's why we got our own in Boyington a few years later.

Coney may be better than Tom A, but he'll have to prove it throughout this season bc Tom's last was pretty damn strong.

Like I said, Vella's got to prove it, but a lot of people thought Strom didn't have a strong arm and he surprised everyone.  It's the accuracy that matters with him.  When Suozzi and Pinero were around, they caught a lot of balls that a lot of decent starting WR's in the LL wouldn't catch which definitely made Mizro look better.  Mizro was just a winner and knew how to play the position and make the right decision.  Vella hasn't shown that much at all yet, but I'm hoping this season will be the case.

SLU - Ithaca webcast:

SLU loses 33-3.  Tight game at the half, with SLU actually looking pretty good besides throwing a pic-6 just before halftime.  Ithaca came out and poured it on in the 2nd half, and SLU had no answers.  SLU d-line looked decent, and the running game started to click before they went down and had to try and catch up through the air.  SLU does not look to have much of a passing game to speak of.  Hopefully they can rebound against Norwich next week and get some confidence with a W.

SLU goes down 3-0 early in the first quarter after fumbling the snap on their first drive.

SLU hits a 47 yard FG to tie it up 3-3.  Both offenses have had 1 big play, but have otherwise looked pretty poor.

Ithaca misses a 42 yd field goal.  Still 3-3 midway through the 2nd quarter.

St. Lawrence puts together a great drive, getting down the the Ithaca 30 before throwing a pic-6.  PAT good.  10-3 Ithaca with 34 seconds left in the half.  That's an absolute back-breaker.

Just heard the same - posting on the LL in game updates...

Dear Susquehanna Fan,

Please urge your team to represent better in the Centennial Conference.  You're making Pat Coleman look right -- we can't have that happen so early in the season!

Love,
Pompous Radio Guy

P.S. Please send the LL Championship Plaque back ASAP.  We need to recover the deposit back on it soon.

I don't even wanna talk about the game...

I miss the LLPP because I tried to do in-game chatter on the Centennial board and the crickets chirped. Way more fun over here...

On the LL In-Game Updates PP, I noted the TD with 0:01 left by USMMA to win over Gallaudet 35-34.  What I didn't realize until I just read the play-by-play is that the drive, which started with 1:05 left in the game, lasted TEN PLAYS over 64 seconds -- that's not even including the "non-play" for a TD called back due to holding by USMMA.  I can't remember a drive covering something close to 59 yards in 10 plays in such a short period of time being executed in recent history.  Great job by USMMA to secure the LL's only win this weekend in non-conference play!

dlip will second that congrats to MMA on their victory. dlip not very happy with WPI losing to Salve at all  :'(. Good to hear SLU had some high points but not quite the start they were looking for obviously, maybe they can gain some momentum next week against Norwich. dlip thought the LL would have gone 2-1 as opposed to 1-2 this weekend.

We'll be talking with WPI Coach Robertson tonight re the tough loss yesterday as well as MMA QB Derrick Ventre on their dramatic win over Galludet, among other guests.  We'll also preview and make predictiions on the next week's openers for Union, Hobart, RPI, and Rochester.

Kickoff is 7:30 PM ET...www.inthehuddLLe.com

In an effort to be fully transparent about some of our behind-the-scenes matters surrounding our "In the HuddLLe" show (http://inthehuddlle.com), I just wanted to update something that TGP stated on the LLPP earlier in the week concerning our invitation to Ithaca's Coach Mike Welch to appear on the show tonight (7:30pm - 9:00pm EDT).

Early in the week, we invited Coach Welch to join us live in order to discuss Ithaca's game against SLU and their upcoming game with Union since it gave us the unique ability to get insight from a coach outside the LL during this out-of-conference portion of the season.  We acknowledged that we were aware of the seven player suspensions and stated that we would not grill him concerning the nature of the infractions; we stated that we would only ask what the availability of the players would be in the Union game (to the extent he would know tonight), and we offered him to state any personal support or confidence he had in the players affected.

The initial request was respectfully refused the next night, as Coach Welch apparently had another media commitment.  At this point, we offered a pre-recorded interview (offer made on Wednesday) -- this request was refused at 10:30pm Saturday night.

We are saddened by our inability to get Coach Welch on the show in our efforts to broaden "In the HuddLLe" beyond just the LL (based on many of your requests) when we have reasonable chances to do so.  We will be attempting to secure Coach Vosburgh of SJF soon when his team is bookended by LL matchups -- we'll provide ample warning to you if he does accept our invitation.

In anticipation of the ultimate refusal by Coach Welch, we scheduled Brian Delaney of the Ithaca Journal and Andrew Santillo of the Troy Record, beat reporters for the Ithaca Bombers and Union Dutchmen for their respective newspapers.  They will preview the Union/Ithaca game for us based on their first-hand accounts of the teams to this point, including Brian's analysis of the SLU/Ithaca game.  Also, Brian will explain the genesis of his story that broke the news of the Ithaca suspensions and the fallout the suspensions may have caused in Ithaca's flat start yesterday against SLU.  And Andrew will help us preview the RPI/Endicott game.

If you have any questions you would like us to ask Brian and/or Andrew, feel free to post them here in the E8PP or the LLPP -- or drop me a private message.  You can also leave questions in our chatroom during the live broadcast.

Thank you for your support of "In the HuddLLe," as we continue to try to meet the requests of you, our listeners.

Yes -- I used to work with him at Union.  I think he graduated with Delaney.

Anyone catch the ESPN Fantasy Football commercial with the Dad wanting to draft Pierre Garcon?  Pretty cool for a DIII guy.
