My motive?  To promote and enhance the game for the players and the fans of Division III that appreciate what Division III football really is -- a collection of players who play the game for the sake of playing the game of football.

So the NESCAC has it right?

Play the game because you love the game. No need for a postseason.

Yeah.

I'd add something about schedule local teams and build rivalries that generate campus and alumni interest, e.g. Williams-Amherst-Wesleyan; Colby-Bates-Bowdoin; but yeah.

So you edited that post and still left in the last part?

It's been hard to decide where to draw the line on this conversation that has now gone over the line on both sides. Pretty embarrassing.

Why? Why is this embarrassing? And "over the line"? Please.
- I responded to a post BY ANOTHER poster, which no rational person would find offensive.
- Someone did their best to find the post offensive, and "irresponsible" that I had an opinion that differed from them
- After some back and forth, I used HUMOR (you know, things that people say/ write to make people laugh) to say that the poster was extremely thin skinned.

Certainly not as embarrassing as being involved in a 30 post debate about a posters comment that he edited within two minutes of posting. Forgive me if I don't cede the moral high ground to you.

It went fine.  Unfortunately during my trip, I was unable to listen to the Union broadcast or post messages of congratulations to anyone.  Shame on me.  But bless your heart for asking.

Nope, LD's too busy doing charity work to be surfing. Heard he's heading to Calcutta to tend to the sick and poor...

Doid dlip wouldn't even worry about it or respond if he was you. This is the arena Pat has used for years now to declare his dominence over any and all who challenge or disagree with anything he says. dlip has never once, seen Pat take exception to anything he has said or acknowledge another's point of view when it differs from his. If there is anything that is embarassing or over the line it is Pat. The great thing is though is that this site and D3 football are bigger than him. dlip has learned to never judge anyone personally on these boards by what they post but Pat may be the one exception. His personal insecurities run obviously rampent on here time and again. It is a shame if you ask dlip. Just dlip's opinion and defense of doid here thats all.

I think Pat may have an issue with labia jokes on his website.  I'm always up for a good female reproductive organ joke, but I can see where he is coming from on this one.

Understood and agreed podunk, but usualy, in dlip's opinion, this is not the case, and that is what dlip is referring to regarding Pat.

Man I love the East!  Over in our land (the OAC board) it's so boring.  Other OAC teams fans come on the board to honk their team's chance against Mount/in the league...and we as Mount fans basically laugh them off of the board.  It's boring....really.   ;D

Just an unrelated story/question....

My son (RB) and his best bud (QB)are pretty good high school football players just finishing their freshman years.  If they grow/get better, they will both be two or three years starters in high school.  The QB is also a reallly good LAX player, and will start as a freshman this year.  I was talking to his dad over the weekend, and we were saying how cool it would be if these two could stick together in college (they have been best friends since 1st grade).

We both don't have any wild notions that they will be good enough to play D-I football, so we were talking about all the D-III alternatives.  I mentioned that there are teams (mainly in the East) that are D-I in LAX, but D-III in football, and that could be an option for his son.  I proceeded to say that possibly my son could tag along as a "throw in" deal.   :)  I then mentioned Hobart as one of those schools.  Great school....not that far from us....near wine country....perfect!  I then went on their website and found out that it's $52K a year to go there??  HOLY CRAP!

State school (Kent)was good enough for me......it will be good enough for Jr.  ;D

TGP....does Hobart offer D-I athletic scholarships for LAX, and do kids earning them generally play football or is that a no-no?

Skunks, it is not DIII but the PSAC has several schools with lacrosse programs.  PSAC is a DII conf of PA state schools, but I figure you probably already know that living in Ohio.

Sknunks, some of these schools will give you 40K in scholorships before you even fill out a financial aid form.  If you are your average American two income family making 40K-80K a year, these northeastern schools will give you aid right off the bat.

Hobart does not offer any DI scholarships.  They are effectively DIII across the board and weren't grandfathered in like Hopkins (who I believe can offer D1 lax scholarships, but only have so many and most are partial if that).

That said, a student can (and several do, e.g., SR WR Mike Lazore on this year's squad, LB Justin Hager back in 08, etc.) play lax and football at Hobart.   Missing fall ball (lax) is sort of a disadvantage, but there are and have been several Hobart players who've successfully participated in both lax and football so its pretty common.

That said, like other privates, Bart does offer aid in the form of institutional grants and/or academic scholarships.  For example back when I was there and it cost ~25-27K/yr I received an aid based institutional grant that cut the cost to like $16-18k/yr.  Needless to say the rest was financed via student loans, etc.  I won't deny the current $52K tag is hefty, but it can be offset to bring the actual cost of attendance down, assuming the applicant has the grades, etc.

Happy to chat with you offline if/when you guys ever want to give Hobart a more serious look.  I used to work in admissions there and remain active as a (the only west coast :) ) member of the Alumni Council.

.....and the only committment you have by accepting that money is to pay it back 80% of it when you are done with school! (the other 20% should be taken care of by some type of scholarship funding)

Seriously, the cost of some of these schools is getting out of hand.  Unless your son is good at football or really smart (academic scholarships) then it wouldn't hurt to weigh the alternatives.
