TGP appreciated seeing one Hobart player, Alex Bell '05, on the D3football.com All-Decade team.

While Hobart's been playing football for about 117 seasons, it really wasn't until the 2000's they got on the national radar.

Anyway, given it's the offseason, the above made TGP wonder who were the best Statesmen over the same time period (2000-10).

Although perhaps only the Rev and PA will care, here's:

TGP's All-Decade Pumpkin Awards:

QB - Shawn Mizro '07 - #1 all time in pass attempts (826), completions (455), yards (6097), TDs (61) and total offense (6135 yards) and TOPG (175.3 YPG).  Tied for 3rd in completion % (55.1), 2nd in pass efficiency (134.9) and YPG (174.2)  Set several records in 2004, including passing TDs (30), for best all-time season.  While Andrew Strom '08 broke several of Mizro's records, he only played in the 2007 season.

RB - Ty Godinho '05 - #1 all rushing attempts (840), 2nd all time rushing leader (3807 yards), TDs (38), scoring (234) and APY (4466).

TGP could have easily gone with Keith Brandon '01 here given he is #1 in scoring, TDs, etc. but he only played one season in this decade (Hobart's first ever NCAA appearance).  That year he lead 'Bart with 884 rushing yards and 9 TDs, and had 141 yards in the second NCAA round game vs. Widener, but felt Godinho deserved the overall nod given "more work" from 2000-10.

WR - Dan Suozzi '05 - #1 all time with 2843 receiving yards, receptions (181), recepts per game (4.79), all purpose (4614), kick returns (44) and receiving TDs (26).  #2 all in punt returns (77), yardage (804) and kick return yds (943).

TE - Tough call given the Statesmen rarely use TEs other than as blockers.  Nico Karagosian would be the "all time" winner, but he graduated in 97.  That said, TGP will give the nod to Jeremy Archer '03 who is the only Hobart TE to be named all first team UCAA/LL in the past decade.

OL - Will give Alex Bell '05 the nod, but guys like Brian Monaco '10 (first team all LL in 09 and first team ESPN academic all-america twice) and Adam Tumilowicz '03 (three year first team all UCAA selections from 00-02) deserve mention as well.

LB (tie) Justin Hager '09 and Jeff Sanders '09 - #1 and #2 all time in total tackles with 288 and 285, respectively.  Hager tied his own the all game record for tackles in 2008 with 20 vs. Mount Union and finished that year with 134 total tackles which is #1 all time.  Sanders is #1 all time in assisted tackles (175).  Honorable mention goes to Nolan Robinson '07 (#2 all time in solo tackles).

DL - Have to go with Ryan Aruck '09 based on his overall size (6' 2", 300 lbs) and the fact he's fifth all time with 268 total tackles and second in assists with 170.

DB - Tough call here, but TGP will go with Drake Woodard '12, first team all LL 08-10.  Dyshwan Washington '05 and James Alexander '08 are also very good candidates given their stats (#1 and 2 all time in pass break ups, Alexander was first team all LL in 06-07), but Woodard was top 10 in the nation in interceptions in 2008 and has reliably been Hobart's best cover man in quite some time.

PK (tie) Dom Ancona '08 and Eric Ampuja '05 - Ampuja was a first team all UCAA/LL in 01, 02 and 04, and Ancona was first team all LL K in 07 and P in 06-7.  Ancona had a better FG overall completion % (71.4 vs. 50%) and also doubled as punter and is #1 all time in avg yds per punt with 40.24.  Ampuja is #1 all time in FG (19) and PAT (123) made.  Ancona was the LL ST POY in 2007.

That's a wrap.  Would be interested in other fans' / alums' take on their own schools.

Enjoy the 3-day MLK weekend.

Anyone catch the Wes Welker interview this week.  He worked in foot, feet, or toe about 11 times.  Clearly subtle dig at Rex Ryan and his foot fetish vids.  Funny ish.

Here it is cut down to the important parts:

Finally the KS family gets some good news.  Yesterday afternoon 1/11/11 KS niece gave birth to KS grandniece, Elia Grace.  The Grace is after KS mom and the baby was born exactly 1 month and 13 hours after Mom KS died.
Holding true to form, Elia looks like Winston Churchill.

Good news.

Coach Joe King resigns as head football coach at RPI affective immediately. dlip has always had a ton of respect for King and all he has done at RPI.

TGP is kind of shocked at the news too.  TGP realizes the "Kinger" was getting up there, but didn't see this one coming at all.

Any thoughts on who's the next HC at RPI?  This article from the Troy Record  stated King "will put in a recommendation that Offensive Coordinator Brian Surace be promoted to head coach."

Either way, a big loss of one of the best LL coaches of all time.  Good luck to the "Kinger" as he moves on.

AUPepBand

Pep never had the opportunity to meet the RPI mentor and was unable to attend the AU-RPI game at ACRONYM Field in 2010. He certainly owned a good record against Pep's Saxons, winning 34-31 in the ECAC Bowl game in 2008, the last football game played on ol' '86 Field, and edging AU 27-24 last season on a last second field goal.

His record speaks for itself. King compiled a 152-59-2 record for a .718 winning percentage, making him the most successful coach in terms of both wins and percentage in the 123-year history of Rensselaer football. He led his teams to two perfect regular seasons, five league championships, four NCAA playoff appearances, highlighted by a trip to the national semifinals in 2003, and nine ECAC bowl games, eight of which were victories.

But Pep always wanted to walk up to the head coach and say, "You must be joking!"

Seriously, an interesting development as the Saxons will open the 2011 season on Sept. 10 with the Engineers visiting Merrill Field. That will be the second straight season the Saxons open against a team whose head coach is making his debut.

On Saxon Warriors!
On Saxon Warriors! On to Victory!
...Fight, fight for Alfred, A-L-F, R-E-D!

Classic k+

LD as the OC... Applejack as the DC... Reg as the RB coach...

Lock it up.

Still trying to recover from the Jets dropping yet another kick in the groin, especially with the Super Bowl being in Dallas, having access to tickets, and my son's (another Jet fan, thankfully my youngest son is a Giants fan) birthday being Super Bowl Sunday.

Now I can't bring myself to go to the game, and to top it off, the Packers are working out at the High Schools indoor practice facility. Dlippen' Jets. It's one thing for them to not go to the Super Bowl, it's another to have your nose rubbed in it.

At Highland Park High School, north of downtown Dallas, 350 boys, about a third of the male student body, are involved in the football program. They're spurred on by the school's tradition. Doak Walker and Bobby Layne played here. So did Matthew Stafford, quarterback of the Detroit Lions.
Over the years, the school has won three state titles and 733 games.
The school's stadium seats 8,000 people. On game night, it's always sold out. Behind the stadium is a $4 million indoor practice facility with a 90-yard turf field. If it rains this week and the Packers need to train indoors, Green Bay will utilize Highland Park High School, home of the Scots.

If you can't bring yourself to attend, a little something to ease your pain: I read that the WORST seats in the stadium are going for $2,950 a ticket on a legal 'scalping' site! ;)

That was the other turn of the knife: The guy who could get them for me at face value said that he had to give them to some other friends who were Steeler fans. The only saving grace was that the friend was a Jets fan too, so I forgave him.

Gotcha.  I thought you actually HAD tickets.  (There goes a nice boost to the IRA! ;))
