A couple of thoughts on Union following their tough loss to Salve Regina. First Salve Regina is a good football team. They are well coached, played hard and made few, if any mistakes. They deserved to win and will be in any game they play.  That being said Union had every chance to win this game.  After being shut out in the first half they rallied to take a 14-6 lead.  Salve found a temporary weakness in the secondary (a questionable substitution) which they exploited to tie the score.  Union then gave Salve a short field which resulted in what turned out to be the winning FG.  The "U" had their chances but couldn't get it done.  Overall the "D" played great. The QB's both played as good or better than expected but IMO questionable play calling caused drives to fizzle.  For example, a six yard gain on first down was followed by a deep delayed hand off stuffed for a 5 yard loss.  Instead of third and short it's third and nine.  Fourth and a foot resulted in a wasted time out, momentum loss and another stuffed run drive killer.  The coaches need to give the kids a better chance to succeed.  Find some plays that work and run them... just because you have 95 plays in the playbook doesn't mean you have to try them all!  Pregame the strength of the Union offense was to be their running game and their tight end.  I question whether the coaches ever really stuck to their game plan.

Ufan, some good thoughts here pal. Looking forward to this weekend when Utica's air attack comes to Shocktown. dlip wrote some specifics on last week and what's to come this week on his blog. A tough loss for Union for sure but dlip is feeling quite positive about this group of Union players and what they are trying to become.

By the way, Mrs. Reg is beyond pissed and breathing fire. Will she be s pissed when I come home with a 150% raise? Not sure, but The Rev thinks not.

I think Reg is going to be pissed too for whatever you are doing with his wife in Korea.

Oops. A little typo.

So Pep is looking forward to his first visit to Acronym Stadium Saterday and bringing along a little band of merry musicians. Pep had occasion to listen to InTheHuddLLe Sunday night and is looking forward to the game. Hoping the Rens will be in attendance to continue their "Family Feud."

Mike Hermann is a veteran QB on RPI's senior-laden team; Pep can bet the Saxons, with a lot of first-time starters, won't be posting any 48-17 score this year (although it would be nice). Will likely be a close game, more like 2010.

Haven't seen Game Notes but Pep understands that Bob Bodor will be starting coach for the Engineers.  ;)

On Saxon Warriors!

We appreciate the support Pep.  Good luck on Saterday!

I'm going through the Merrimack roster (the team who beat Rowan today) and saw a Gallo kid from upstate NY.  Any relation to the Union Gallos?  Why choose Merrimack over the U?

Personal/Before Merrimack: Born January 14, 1992...son of John and Terry Gallo...has three siblings, Sarah, Alexandra and Nicholas...three-time all-Conference, League MVP, first team all-state at Schalmont High School (NY)...holds single-season record for TDs (30) and rushing yards (2,402) at Schalmont...owns all-time rushing record with 4,448 yards...tallied section two best 226 tackles to go with six interceptions...also lettered in wrestling and baseball...civil engineering major at Merrimack.

dlip does not think so Utah. This Gallo is from a town right outside Schenectady where as Union's Justin and Connor Gallo grew up in Lansingburgh which is right outside of Troy. Maybe cousins? dlip doubts it though.

Does anyone know anything about that Merrimack team? Obviously they aren't D3, but I wonder how they are compared to the normal NJAC competition. I'm not sure if Rowan's win last week looks as good anymore considering Del Val lost again.

They are an average d2 team with a lot of all state mass kids on the roster from what I just saw.  I think they can give out several full or partial football scholarships so they have the advantage there.

Yeah I guess its just one of those throw away type games.

Del Val just lost to lycoming today as well, so maybe Rowan isn't as great as we thought they were.

Anyway, looks like another up and down year in the east.  Probably a lot up upsets, surprises, and tight games this year, of course ending with a huge 40+ point loss to mt union or UWW.

But who knows.

To fans of D-3 football everywhere.  I am honored to have been asked to spread the word regarding a new cancer fund that has been established to help Tom Pattison, UW-W sports broadcaster and founder of www.warhawkfootball.com    I and my family know, all to well, how a cancer diagnosis can be devastating to a families daily lives and finances. Please, consider making even the smallest donation to Tom.

The following is an open letter by Retired UW-W Coach Bob Berezowitz:

Team Tom Cancer Fund Drive established

Once a Warhawk, always a Warhawk are the often spoken words by Tom Pattison, longtime "voice" of the Warhawks. Over the many years of broadcasting UW-Whitewater football, basketball and baseball games on KOOL 106.5 (and prior to that (940 WFAW), Tom has "bled purple" during each one of his broadcasts.

Unfortunately, on May 28, 2012 Tom was diagnosed with advanced stage 2 colon cancer. He underwent colorectal cancer surgery in Fort Atkinson and in the process has developed astronomical hospital and medical bills.

Tom has already gone through the first phase of radiation treatment at the UW Cancer Clinic along with chemotherapy with phase two starting later this month.

Tom has given his heart and soul to Warhawk athletics over his 25 years of living here in southern Wisconsin. He served six years as the president of the UW-Whitewater Quarterback Club and still serves on the club's board of directors.

In 2003 Tom founded Warhawkfootball.com where Warhawk fans, players, former players and parents have been able to view up-to-date Warhawk football news and information 365 days a year. Nearly 1.5 million visitors have clicked onto the Website over the years.

The Website that has been funded entirely by Tom has been a popular "voice" for Warhawk football fans not only locally but around the world.

Well now Tom needs your assistance in his battle with cancer.

With the help and leadership of UW-Whitewater Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Dr. Paul Plinke and former Warhawk football coach Bob Berezowitz and KOOL 106.5 Radio a team has been set up to lead a campaign to raise funds for Tom.

The "Team Tom Cancer Fund" has been established through Commercial Bank in Whitewater and is now accepting donations.

Donations may be sent to: Team Tom Cancer Fund, c/o Commercial Bank, 200 South Freemont St. Whitewater, WI 53190

The fund raising drive will also include Tom Pattison Day at Perkins Stadium on Oct. 6, 2012. More details will be announced shortly.

"I have known Tom for many years while coaching and now in retirement," Berezowitz said. "There is not another person who has given more of himself to help promote UW-Whitewater football. He is always writing articles for both past and present players that are published on his Website.

It is now our turn to say "thank you" for his efforts by considering making a donation to the to assist Tom in his time of need.

Go Warhawks,
