@ Jonny Utah-
A couple weeks back we were talking about a kid going to a lower level MAC school vs going to Mount Union and you mentioned Kent State losing to The Minnesota Gophers by 3 and I said that's not an accomplishment, Minnesota is terrible and has been my entire life  ;)

Update: The Gophers play another MAC school today (12-28-15) in The Quick Lane Bowl. The Gophers are 5-7 and the newly appointed coach Tracy Claeys (was appointed Head Coach after Jerry Kill stepped down for health reasons) has been several on local TV,radio & newspaper interviews stating this is a great opportunity for the kids and the university. I'm calling b#!!$h!t on it being a great opportunity for the kids. It's the flippin' Quick Lane Bowl and by the way the Gophers have lost 7 straight Bowl games dating back to the 2005 Music City Bowl. This is all about the cash. Through payments from the Big 10 the Gophers receive $1.2M to use as they see fit. According to the Star Tribune article yesterday the Gophers will cut costs and turn a profit on the "travel stipend" from the conference. The band and cheerleaders have luxury coaches (bus ride) from Minneapolis to Detroit. This is a great opportunity for the University.

Aside from the  travel stipend the University also will receive  "Bowl Revenue Sharing" from the Big 10,which last year amounted to $4.5M per member institution. This share goes to member schools even if they did not make a bowl game. **Nebraska,Maryland & Rutgers share increases slightly each year until they become fully vested members of the conference.

I see Minnesota losing to Central Michigan and Tracy Claeys going on Twin Cities TV saying what a great opportunity this bowl game was for the kids.
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

HScoach

the "great opportunity" comes from the chance for the new coach to get another 3 weeks of practice and a chance to head into the off-season on an upswing.  nothing more.
I find easily offended people rather offensive!

Statistics are like bikinis; what they reveal is interesting, what they hide is essential.

Just saw this post.

The only reason I think this bowl game wasn't an "opportunity" is because it was played in Detroit in the winter.  If it was played in Florida or somewhere interesting and fun I think the kids might have enjoyed it more.  I'm still not sure what I would have done if I was a kid in Ohio and Kent State offered me a full ride vs. Mt. Union recruiting me.

@Jonny Utah,
I was wrong, I felt the Gopher's secondary would get torched by the Central Michigan passing game.

The Big 10 is so flush with TV $$ I can't understand why the Gophers have sucked for so long. Other than not making Football & Men's Basketball a priority. I live in a state that  Women's volleyball, Women's ice hockey & Women's basketball are the rage. The local TV stations give time to these sports because....dah people like to watch a winning team. Men's ice hockey & Wrestling are consistently toward the top but the athletic department administration (we are currently without an AD) can't seem to find the money to put together practice facilities that are competitive to other power conference schools, forget about exceeding the competition.

Until the Gophers find an AD who can get the donations flowing & then finding the right coaches, Minnesota Gopher football & Men's basketball will continue to be a wasteland.

Yea it seems like they went with the "nice guy" coach in Claeys, which isn't necessarily the wrong move, but maybe they need more than that.  Minnesota seems to be the type of place where you simply need to get lucky with local talent, and recruit the same places Iowa (and North Dakota State) seem to be getting all their talent.  It probably starts with the right coach though.

Also, if you are going to stick with that power running game, you better make sure you are bigger and stronger than everyone else is.  I'm not sure they are.

Let me ask you this.  What is the deal with that Eden Prairie High School?  It seems they have athletes everywhere, including here in Boston (At BC), but I've seen kids from there all the time at big football and basketball programs.

Eden Prairie is a pretty affluent suburb in the southwest part of the Twin Cities. They have resisted building another high school (or two) and have become a powerhouse in several sports for both boys & girls. As an example, Apple Valley (where Tyus Jones hails from) is in a school district that has 5 high schools and each of those schools are much smaller enrollment wise than Eden Prairie and depending on the sport, have to play in the same division as Eden Prairie.

The AD and head football coach is Mike Grant (son of legendary Vikings coach Bud Grant) and played at SJU. Early in his career he was an assistant coach for John Gagliardi before he took his first assignment as head coach at a smaller school in Forest Lake before moving to Eden Prairie over 25 years ago. He has a lock on the talent in Eden Prairie because there is only one high school.
Grant was a finalist for a SJU job three years ago when Gagliardi retired but withdrew his name for consideration. There are many rumors about that, from having a pretty good gig in Eden Prairie and close to retirement,to not wanting to move 85 miles to the woods of rural Sterns county (where SJU is located)- nobody knows except for him and that's his business.

As far as recruiting the same areas as NDSU,Iowa, Wisconsin and Northwestern......that would be the Twin Cities. Until a Gopher football and men's basketball coach can wall off the state of Minnesota and have kids want to stay and play for their home state it will be a slog

Watching Bowl games and seeing Minnesota kids or March Madness is even more unsettling....the talent drain going elsewhere and then having success is more than I can bear. Especially when the kid was either never recruited or asked to walk on for the Gophers (as occurred with my parent's neighbor kid several years back) and Wisconsin gives the kid a scholarship and he flourishes.
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

Pep is thinking that pg04 makes for a good Ralphie ("Ohhhh fuuuuudge!") and is wondering whether he's "shot his eye out" yet with that official Red Ryder, carbine action, two-hundred shot range model air rifle!

"Oh my God I shot my eye out!"  :o

Nope, I just blamed it on an icicle. My poor glasses didn't make the ordeal, though.  ;)

Union hires Stony Brook offensive coordinator Jeff Behrman as it's head football coach.  Behrman is a 1995 graduate of John Carroll where he played quarterback.  Welcome to Union coach and good luck.  You have your work cut out for you.

Good luck to Coach Behrman as new HC at Union. Looking forward to the rise of the Dutchmen for the good of the league. Audino was a great coach for many years, but I hope this change will energize the Dutchmen players in 2016( not enough to beat the Statesmen , of course  ;D
