No way does Union finish last in the LL this year. I'm optimistically thinking 4-6, 3-4 league. The team has been challenged by the new coaching staff and the alumni/fan community and will surprise a few people.

This wouldn't surprise dlip Bill, there is some talent here. Honestly, dlip doesn't know what to expect but he believes a 3 or 4 win season is possible. Here are a couple of things he believes we will see in 2016:

-Improved defensive discipline and organization. dlip can't ****ing remember how many times he witnessed Union defensive players look toward the side lines (pre-snap) with their arms up in the air saying, "What the **** am I supposed to do?" It drove dlip bonkers and the lack of direction on the defensive side of the football (which had been obvious for almost a decade) clearly reached it's peak.

-Improved pass coverage. Union's pass defense has been nothing short of abysmal for at least a decade. The Dutchmen d-backs have worked hard but were very rarely able to put themselves in position to defend the pass. Even looking back at The Dutchmen's last undefeated season (2005) dlip believes it was our inability to defend the pass, in key situations, that cost the Dutchmen (ex. Rowan game).

-A simplified offense. Dlip has always been and will always be a fan of Audino's pro-style offensive play book. That book was thicker than an Encyclopedia and filled with some pure offensive genius. It was impressive and had been successfully carried out by Dutchmen for decades. However the current players just weren't buying in and dlip believes it just became too much for them. The offense often seemed out of sync and without an identity. It was/is time to simplify, choose an identity, and master it.

This season, in dlip's mind, will be defined by three things: a more disciplined and well coached defense, a simplified and directed offense (whether or not it's successful this season is another story), and the offensive line. So much weight sits on the Dutchmen's line which consists of some veteran players who have been together for two-three years. Union has three very capable backs in Kinzelmann, Carn, and Enoch. If the line can set the tone for a consistent run first offense dlip feels that Bill's thought on a 3 to 4 win season could be in the works.

Word from the Bartland is that the Statesmen 1s fared well, scoring 10 pts on two drives, vs. Buff St last night.

A few mistakes by younger guys here and there, but overall team and coaches were happy with the results.

Hope this helps us this coming Saturday at Brockport.  This looks like a tough first game. Compughterrating forecasts Brockport 28, Hobart 27 due to home field advantage ( not sure this means anything). I hope the Statesmen D is ready for Andrews as the reigning OPY in the E8 and the Hobart O executes early. Can't wait to see the final Oline and how they come together.

dlip is really hoping Sweeney has a great year bartman. dlip likes that he is a Geneva kid and thinks that if he is as successful as his potential suggests, it will make a great story for the Pumpkinheads! dlip will be rooting for Bart big time come Saturday. He'll be out in Ithaca checking out his new look Dutchmen.

dlip +K for positive energy for Sweeney and  Bartman's Pumpkinheads. I hope Sweeney is a great story this year ......Brockport has some mean on the team, so one game at a time. Hopefully the Dutchmen will take a few steps  back this year....it doesn't feel like LL football without a strong Union team. A great first test against the Bombers ....since the Bombers are still an E8 foe, I am totally backing the Dutchman and the LL  for 2-0 against the E8 this weekend + the Saints over Moeville would make it 3-0 against the E8.

Nice passing weather for the Statesman O. Hope the Hobart D can contain Andrews. It's been a long time since Hobart faced Brockport and now it will be an opening game for the next 3 seasons. Looking forward to the start of the season and injury free combat. Forecast: Hobart 28 Brockport 21

The passing part could be the difference. If Sweeney is as good as people say he is..then his passing will be big advantage over Brockport, who will be breaking in a QB who has never attempted a pass at Brockport. Cragg is a proven Defensive coach who seems to always have great defenses. Andrews will be a challenge but much less so if Brockport has not much of a passing game to loosen up Hobart's D. The biggest challenge for most teams is Brockport's no huddle up tempo style. The only team to really shut them down last season was Alfred..and they usually always have a tough D as well. Brockport can go up and down the field quickly by spreading teams out, hitting them with inside runs..pop passes and boots off the run action. Then some quick out passes and lots of crossing routes. Also an effective screen game as well, particularly on the goal line.  Brockport's Oline could be a question mark as they last both OT's from last season as well I believe.
Even with Sweeneys' impact last season..Hobart's offensive production was kinda average last season... 115 yards rushing per game..and barely 200 yards passing per game. They basically won with defense it seems. But B port wasn't good on defense either. So..there will be some interesting matchups. I don't have a prediction yet.

Guys great job on the first show of the year. We will have to look back in a few months and see how you did with the predictions.

I also think the game predictions will be very accurate. However, I can provide a little bit more insight on the SLU vs Morrisville game. You guys mentioned a few times the past two years Morrisville beat the Saints and essentially ruined their record as far as an at-large bid goes. In 2014, the saints smoked Morrisville at home - it was the (still) unbelievable loss to Norwich that ruined the hope. Morrisville does return their very talented QB, however they lost their best player in RB Pena. They also lost two first team all E-8 O Lineman and 5 of their top 6 tacklers from last season. I get the reverse psychology tactic, and the Saints for some reason each year put up a stinker in OOC games, but you have to believe the come out firing his year. Also, word is they very much handled Ithaca in what will be their last scrimmage with each other due to the Bombers coming over to the LL.

ITH radio

That's right I had a "senior moment" re the 2014 season. It was Norwich who tripped up the Saints in a rainy, ugly 10-7 game that ultimately cost them a pool c.

Point is, Saints need to avoid those kind of losses that got them the past two seasons. This team can go undefeated, especially if their QB competition goes well.

Funny, going back some years who the **** ever thought we'd see those words typed (regardless of scrimmage, preseason, in season, or a playoff game).

Good stuff.  One thing I noticed though is that the first archived podcast that came up was one from 2 years ago for some reason (from that link).  If you go to archived shows, this show is the second one down.

Frank mentioned that Union dropped the JV schedule, and I also heard that Springfield dropped JV games for all of their sports this year, (as a cost saving measure I guess).  I wonder is this is happening at other places?

Ditto your remarks on ITH pre season show......as far as JV programs, Hobart has maintained JV schedule , although fairly light with 3-4 games
