I have no clue except for one coach being ejected and three players mouthing off to the referees.  I know one referee threw his hat, so you know two of those penalties came from one official.....  Regardless, the whole even galvanized the team and fans which turned the tide of the game into the 4th quarter.  Funny how something like that can help win a game.

Okay, I mean, the math makes sense. Two questions though:

What was Ithaca so mad about?
Who got ejected? Swanstrom?
I believe it was the defensive coordinator, Toerper, that was ejected. It wasn't clear what he was upset about. Video did not show him bumping any refs. I thought the refs over did it and nearly lost control of the game. Then they over penalized to calm things down. That only made it worse. Great response by the Bombers to finish the deal.

Congrats to Itahca, you guys won. However, that was not the game I was expecting to watch on and off the field.

Geez Louise...just logged in to check out Ithaca score......first congratulations to IC on a tremendous second half comeback against a solid NJAC opponent...second, I checked the play by play... what the hell happened to get 4 unsportsmanlike penalties after a Salisbury score?...must have been some crazy dispute...but whatever it was it inspired the Bombers to kick some butt right afterwards....now those who were there might have a take on this and I am sure there are some regrets by players , coaches and probably officials as that many unsportsmanlike penalties is extremely unusual ...but man, as an opponent of the Bombers next season , I don't think you want to get them fired up like that.... >:(

If you look at this and the NJAC thread, all is explained.  Basically, the defensive coordinator got ejected for confronting an official for what might have been about a Salisbury TD.  Anyways, once he got ejected, a bunch of players started going at the officials and the flags hit the floor.  I am thrilled I got to see the game and the subsequent Salisbury kickoff from the Ithaca 10 yard line.....still can't believe it.

Tell me they at least tried an inside kick.

Thanks Ski for the explanation....never, ever heard of a kickoff from there, sportscenter should be on that one.....how did the kickoff work out?....I think I would have given an onside a shot  ;D

Here's the quandary.  The ball has to travel 10 yards to recover the onside kick.  If Salisbury kicked the ball into the endzone, they would have most likely got a touchback to the 25.  If the ball stops short of the endzone and nobody touches it, well, you have a live ball that could stay like that indefinitely.  So, the officials allowed Salisbury to touch the ball down at the 2 after squib kicking it.  Some Ithaca fans were pissed that a flag wasn't thrown, but I could see no other way that this could have been sorted out.  The play deserves to be on the play of the week as it is an extremely rare situation.  I was really amused at the whole thing.  Ejections, fights, yelling, flags..... it was a cornucopia of chaos.

It took 10+ minutes to sort it out. When Salisbury lined up to kick from the 10, I was trying to do the math in my head. They marched off 4 x 15, a total of 60 yards. Since Ithaca had to line up 10 yards away they were all in the endzone. A kick that went the required 10 yards would be a touchback so Salisbury then tried to take a delay of game penalty to give themselves more room. Ithaca saw through that and declined the penalty. The actual kick was a little roller that didn't even go the ten yards. By rule Ithaca got the ball where it stopped at the two so that worked out for Salisbury. The Bombers were able to get a couple of first downs so they were able to overcome the poor field position.

Congrats to Salisbury and IC on successful seasons. What a strange game, I find it disturbing that collegiate level refs can lose control of a game so easily. I didn't hear or see what happened to cause Toerper to get ejected, I know he wasn't happy with the TD call but I never saw him bump or touch an official but that isn't my gripe. I thought the officials were foolish to stand along the IC sidelines after the ejection and continue to throw flags. they should of known the ejection would stir up emotions. Once again, I have no problem with the ejection but move on, don't stand there and throw a flag for every player that had something to say after their coach gets run off. At that point they began to lose control of the stadium not just the field. As fans booed the officials one of the Delaware State Police turned to a 20 something and myself and ejected us from stadium. I was told I was being asked to leave because I was to loud and I kept following the ball and never sat in one place. When the officer realized that he couldn't point out a single unsportsmanlike comment made by myself he came to realize that he had made a mistake and was making matters worse. That along with professional courtesy for a fellow officer allowed me re-entry to find things getting hairy and scary among the fans' This was due to overzealous Officials. As far as the game goes I thought they both played strong on D but in the end I think the balance on O for IC was the factor as Salisbury one dimensional O got stalled in 4th against  a good D. Kudos to #7 for the Gulls as he did a great job on Gladney.

Dlip shared his disappointment yesterday regarding Union's loss to Cortland but today he feels it important to give praise to the Dutchmen for such an incredible turnaround season that came as a result of their hard work. How far the Dutch have come since 0-10. This coaching staff and the players have committed to growth and working toward excellence. Dlip is so proud to be a Dutchman fan! There is a bright future in Shocktown. The Garnet have worked themselves into D3 relevance again and dlip couldn't be more proud of every single one of them!

dlippiel

Congrats to Ithaca on their W yesterday! Dlip was so pumped to see the Bombers come back and take charge against a very good Gulls team. Dlip believes the league has a lot to be proud of in 2017!

Again, we don't know what happened down on the field, so I couldn't share your opinion that the officials were out of line.  The first thing I saw at the 50 yard line in front of me was an official throwing his cap, as he had already thrown a flag.  There must have been something that caused him to do that as far away as he was.  Officials should never have to turn the cheek when it comes to the behavior of a team or their coaches on the field.  They are the judges out there.  Sure, they blow calls and that pisses people off myself included, but that doesn't give coaches the right to go after them.  I mean really, the Salisbury player, if he was out, would have been on the 1 foot line.  Why is going nuts over that ever a good idea?  The ball would have been punched in on the next play.

The last time I saw fans going at each other like this was when Wesley visited Mount Union for the first time.  I can tell you, from the camera box, it was downright disturbing what I saw and it wasn't coming from the visiting Wesley fans.  I have lost a lot of respect for Mount Union since then.

Regardless of what the officials did or did not do, the coaching staff (especially Swanstrom) has to protect the players. They have to calm them down, and get them to stop jawing. It's ridiculous to have four unsportsmanlike conduct calls on one play

I agree the players can't jaw, but this was not Swanstrom fault, the flags all came in about 3 seconds time. They were right to throw a flag but not 4. When there is a sideline infraction do they access a penalty for for each player or is it a team penalty accessed once ?

If it was that rapid fire, it's odd. Perhaps it wasn't on Swanstrom. Ultimately, it's obvious everyone lost control. There were what, 15 combined unsportsmanlike and personal foul penalties in the game? That's simply inexcusable.
