Yeah, but Cortland had like, 13 blocked kicks this year, and not only did they lose the most-attended D-III game ever, their coach retired! These teams better stop blocking so many kicks or they might be tempting fate

Great point.  I actually heard McNeil wanted to stay 2-3 more years but after finishing #1 in BK......How can you blame the guy for leaving on top?

WOW! Astounding stat right there. Lead the country in blocked kicks, coach retires. This could be an unwelcome trend moving forward, but it's a great final season honor to hang your hat on.

This is a very fair data point . Actually, having seen the Cortland special teams unit for punt coverage at the NYS Bowl, the Cortland unit was awesome, but they still lost 30-10.

Interesting stat:

Only 15 d3 teams did not have a kick blocked this year.  I figured it would be more. What is even more interesting?  St. John's has had 14 kicks blocked this year.  What does that mean?  It means TOP still dominates as the best stat in college football.

Depends what you mean by 'lost'.

ITHACA 44:26
CORTLAND 15:34

.............TASTE IT!!!!!!!!.....................................

Ok I have to get serious here for a second.

I can't find any TOP stat history for any division really, but did see this"

https://collegefootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2016/09/12/air-force-set-an-fbs-record-for-time-of-possession-on-saturday/

If Air Force breaks the FBS TOP record in 2016 with a 45:14, Ithaca might be close with 44:26 with their game against Cortland this year.

I could only find one record regarding TOP online, and it is from a 2006 SEC game where Auburn recovered an onsides kick and had two possessions in one quarter.

Most Possession Time In a Quarter
15:00—Auburn vs. South Carolina, Sept. 28, 2006 (3rd quarter, 30 plays
for 136 yards)

Why d3football.com doesn't keep stats like this is pretty insulting if you ask me.  Almost like moving the Stagg to Texas.  Real kick in the balls this is.

Yearly winners should receive the Silver and Chestnut Trophy. But you're right, an all-time TOP record would be optimal so we can compare apples to pears. I bet there's some like 118 year old Rochester team that did like 57 minutes of TOP against Hamilton.

When one looks at interrelated statistics...it becomes very clear....Ithaca had to keep the ball and score on very slow possessions so Cortland's awesome kick blocking unit was neutralized....in all seriousness, I was calling for Hobart to quick kick on 3rd and long to avoid this threatening unit, actually giving up TOP in order to avoid the blocked kick likelyhood.....but I was totally wrong since TOP rules all. Thank you for making it all so clear.  ::)

I really hope the TOP discussion/trolling continues in perpetuity. It is easily some of the best content on this board.

Whoa.  You can make fun of Jonny Utah, my family, The Liberty League, or even the Rochester Yellow Jackets football team.  But once you start taking shots at TOP......not cool.

And the LL is by far the most entertaining board on here.  I mean the MIAC is a distant 2nd.  That place is like watching a Newhart show in 2019 and still laughing at it.

Don't you see the contradiction in taking shots at the MIAC board while defending TOP at the same time?

The MIAC board owns the TOP battle on d3boards.com

Dammit.

Sad to say you are correct.  D3board TOP numbers: (Post replies/Posters x 3.14)

MIAC: 19.66
LL: 10.73

The LL is a smaller league but we won't use that as an excuse.  We must get better.  I'll take ownership of this.

Meh.  St Thomas has a well-earned reputation for crashing victory formations.  They even did it against Mount in one of their losing Staggs (is there any other kind of Stagg for UST?  Well, no, there isn't).  Heck, you feel slighted if UST doesn't play dirty or cheap against you.

But come back to this when one of the LL teams' coaches organises a victory-celebrating team photo on the opposition side's mid-field logo.  Or goes for a two-point conversion with a blind, behind-the-back flip of the ball against a team that they went on to beat 80-3.  When that happens then you've got someone to complain about.  Until then, amateur hour.

Hmmm...hadn't seen this.... I guess this partially explains Carleton's vote on the ouster of St. Thomas from the MIAC.
I was very impressed with the execution of the play by the Tommies; however, the timing of the play call by Coach Caruso(Ithaca '96) , not so much. +k to Oz for the contribution and good luck against Wheaton, I heard Coach Caruso has the time this week to draw up a 2 point conversion play for the Johnnies. ;D

My former teammate Glenn C is just misunderstood.  St. Thomas will be beating the Gophers 150-0 by 2030.

In other news, the final top 25 is out for TOP.  Playoffs starting this Saturday.  A lot of talk about Grinnell sneaking into the top ten this week.  People are not happy to say the least.

Yo JU, due to my lack of intelligence, i'm hoping you can do me a favor and add any national rankings next to these teams. I'm curious to see how they match up. I'm quite sure the top TOP 10 has at least 7-8 in the top 10 easily being this is all just scientific facts of the utter importance of TOP. Not seeing Ithaca on here speaks volumes to me. Maybe they woulda been better with the backup afterall.

No worries.  I explain it slowly so even someone like you can understand.

Now there are some interesting things coming out of the two polls here.  On one hand Mount Union (former #1 in the d3 top 25) is ranked 21st in the Nation in TOP.  That is the highest ranking team in both polls.  Now Chapman is 10th in TOP and 12th in the poll, so that tells us something as well.  Bethel and St. Thomas are also in the TOP top 40.

Now here is where it gets interesting.  Mary Hardin Baylor is 219th in the country in TOP.  This is out of 245 d3 teams.  Berry, Central and Linfield are also in the bottom 75.  What will be interesting is if MHB wins the National Championship (not the real one, the one that uses points scored as the winner).  Their head coach will have a lot of explaining to do.  Is he cheating?  Are they using a different clock in Texas?  Things don't add up there and I'm going to get to the bottom of it.

FYI (d3 top 25 and then the TOP rankings)

1. Mount Union   (21)
2. MHB (219)
3. Wheaton (42)
4. Muhlenburg (93)
5. North Central (117)
