I would have personally given Union's guy the nod over Copp at LB. In my opinion, a pick 6 and blocked FG is worth a lot more than just racking up tackles — particularly given that tackles (outside of solo ones) are sort of tricky to parcel out

Jonny Utah

Yea agreed with both.  Copp is 2nd in the nation in tackles currently, but like Unionpalooza stated you can spread it around.  Oline awards can go to teams who are top in the country in rushing stats which Union is.

Also interesting to note when it comes to tackles, only two players in the top 50 in the country in tackles are from teams in the top 25.  Stola from Ithaca and Winey from Cortland.  There are 9 teams in the top 25 who have rushers in the top 50, and 8 teams in the top 25 who have passers in the top 50 (ypg).

Speaking of the Ithaca o-line, can we talk about how big those guys are?  By my math, they average just shy of 310 pounds.  Definitely the biggest line I can remember in the LL by a fair margin.  (For comparison, Union runs 285 pounds on average, certainly the heaviest I can remember in a long while.). Would be interesting to see how that stacks up against the rest of D3 - I would assume it's way near the top.

Lines seem heavier all around the past few years.  I wonder if that is related to all the COVID fifth years playing.  Reminds me of the good old days of Rowan, where they were lining up 24-year olds at DE and LB.

Amazingly, North Central's o-line is not that huge - smaller than Union's, in fact, at a 279 pound average. Yet they absolutely dominate, even against the better defense's in the country.  A good reminder that size is not strength is not skill.  Reminds me of that small Pacific Lutheran  1999 team that pushed the Rowan 24-year olds all over the field.

IC definitely has gone big on the O-line, which is a nice change from some of the woefully undersized lines of the past.

As someone who was part of some of those lines in the past I am triggered by this... but also so very true. We were smaller but mighty (kind of)... I am just continuing to give away my identity here

Not even those lines (which guided IC to a pair of playoff appearances) but some of the earlier ones.

In 2011, IC's roster had 6 offensive linemen weighing above 250, with the heaviest being 277.

This current roster has 16 players above 277, and 9 above 300.

There's no real deeper meaning to any of it. Size is merely size, and there is more to being a good OL than size. But it's definitely a change

There was only 1 former 'contributor' to this page that actually went out of his way to identify people here. Your secret is safe with me. Way too much effort. LOL

Thanks. I'd say it's hit-or-miss but way better than some programs.

I recall talking to a former SID once who said this was the #1 part of the job people didn't understand when it came to how overworked so many in the profession are.

The Liberty League gives out weekly awards in 11 sports, which means that each week, you've got to tally up weekly stats/performances for players in 11 sports and write who knows how many nominations. And if you don't get your athletes selected, all that work is essentially unseen. I can see how it may simply be a lower priority for some departments

I get that. For us, assuming you've already uploaded your box score, you just log in on Sunday or Monday (or right after the game) and select your team, then your player from a dropdown menu. Stats already are autopopulated. Write a couple of sentences of supporting text (you may have already written it for a conference nomination). Have tried to make it as streamlined as possible.
